Use the exact model name, the box contents, and the CFI model number—not a generic “PS5” headline—to determine whether a listing includes a disc drive. “PS5 Digital Edition” means the console is sold without a drive. A standard PS5 listing that describes Blu-ray playback is the disc-equipped version. “PS5 Pro” is drive-optional: Sony documents disc playback only when a compatible drive is installed and sells that drive separately, so a Pro bundle must explicitly show the drive as included.
The official add-on is Sony Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. It supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs, and it requires an internet connection to pair with the console during setup.

The quickest way to read a PS5 listing
Start with the product name, then confirm the contents and model number. The word “Digital Edition” is the clearest exclusion: Sony describes it as “an all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” A listing for a standard “PS5 console” or “disc edition” should mention playing PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs, but do not rely on a shortened marketplace title by itself.

Sony has not published a market-wide statistic showing how often retailer listings omit or include a drive. The reliable evidence is the model designation, the stated contents, and the CFI identifier shown on the product or its packaging.

Why the product title can mislead you
Retailer and marketplace titles are often shortened to “PlayStation 5,” even when the underlying product is a Digital Edition or a Pro console sold without an accessory. A generic title can therefore describe the console family without describing the hardware in the box.
Descriptions such as “next-generation console,” “white PS5,” or “PlayStation 5 system” do not establish disc support. Promotional photographs can also show a console beside accessories that are not part of the advertised package. Treat every picture as illustrative until the written contents section confirms what is included.
For a standard PS5, the strongest positive clue is explicit Blu-ray language. Sony’s product comparison describes the disc-capable console as able to “Play PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs.” The strongest negative clue is “Digital Edition,” which means no drive is supplied. For a Pro, neither a generic “PS5 Pro” title nor a photograph of a bare console proves that a drive is in the box.
Step-by-step: inspect any listing before you buy

Read the complete product name
Expand the title if the retailer truncates it on mobile. Identify whether it says “Digital Edition,” “Pro,” “disc edition,” or simply “PS5 console.” Record the exact wording rather than relying on a seller’s category or search result.

Find an explicit drive statement
Search the description and specification panel for disc drive, Blu-ray, or optical drive. A standard disc-equipped listing should connect the console to Blu-ray playback. “Digital Edition” is an explicit statement that the drive is absent. If neither positive nor negative wording appears, treat the listing as unconfirmed.

Open the “In the box” or contents section
Look for a separately named drive, not just the console, controller, power cable or stand. On a Pro listing, the drive must appear in this section or in an unambiguous bundle description. A drive pictured next to the console but omitted from the contents list should not be assumed to be included.

Inspect every product photograph
Zoom in on the front of the console, the rear label and the retail box. A detachable-drive design can look similar to a Digital Edition from a distance, so use photographs to locate the model label and to see whether a drive is physically present. Do not infer inclusion solely from a console’s exterior shape.

Record the CFI model number
Find the CFI identifier in the specifications, photographs or box label. Sony’s support guidance tells owners to check the model number when setting up a console. Write down the complete number and its group, such as CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or CFI-7000; do not rely on a seller’s shorthand.

Match the model to the drive information
If the listing is for a Digital Edition or a Pro without a drive, compare its CFI group with Sony’s compatibility information for Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. The accessory listing identifies CFI-2000/2100 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 Pro compatibility. Sony support also identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 groups in its detachable-drive setup guidance.

Ask the seller a yes-or-no question
Send a message that names the exact model: “Is Sony Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1 physically included in this box, and is the CFI model number shown in the photographs?” Ask for a new photograph of the unopened contents if the description is vague. Keep the answer and image with your order records.

Calculate the complete cost
For a Digital Edition or a Pro sold without a drive, add the price of a compatible CFI-ZDD1 to the console price before comparing it with a standard disc-equipped bundle. Include any regional bundle differences and storage capacity differences shown by the seller. A lower sticker price is not necessarily lower once the separately purchased drive is added.

Understanding CFI model groups
CFI numbers identify hardware groups; they are not a promise that a drive is in a particular retail bundle. A compatible model can be sold with or without the accessory, so use the number to check whether an add-on is possible, then use the contents list to establish whether it is already included.

Regional packaging and retailer bundles can use different suffixes or descriptions. When a listing shows only part of a CFI number, request the full label before treating the compatibility check as complete.
How to interpret the standard PS5 versions
Standard PS5 with a drive
A standard PS5 console marketed for discs should be accompanied by Blu-ray wording. Sony describes this version as playing PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs. Check that the drive is listed among the contents and that the CFI number in the listing corresponds to the photographed or specified console.
Do not let a seller’s use of “disc edition” substitute for a contents check. The phrase is useful, but the combination of the exact name, Blu-ray statement, box contents and CFI label is stronger than any single term.
PS5 Digital Edition
Digital Edition is an all-digital configuration with no disc drive. Games and other media must be obtained digitally unless a compatible accessory is installed later. If the listing says “Digital Edition,” the absence of a drive is the expected configuration, even if a generic photograph shows a PS5 beside a controller.
PS5 Pro
PS5 Pro requires extra caution because the console name does not guarantee an optical drive. Sony states that disc playback is available when a drive is installed and sells the compatible drive separately. A Pro listing is therefore complete only when its contents explicitly include a drive or the seller confirms that the bundle contains one.
Can you add a disc drive later?
For compatible Digital Edition and Pro models, Sony’s official add-on is Disc Drive model CFI-ZDD1. The accessory listing specifies compatibility with CFI-2000/2100 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 Pro systems. Match the CFI number before ordering; do not assume that every PS5-shaped console accepts the same accessory.

CFI-ZDD1 supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD discs. Sony also states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Plan for an internet connection during the initial pairing, even if your reason for buying the drive is to play locally owned discs afterward.
Installing an accessory later changes the total cost and the time required before the console can play discs. Compare the combined console-and-drive cost with a standard disc-equipped PS5 bundle, and preserve the retailer’s compatibility and contents statements in case the model or accessory is misrepresented.
A practical comparison checklist for two listings
When two offers look similar, compare them on the same five axes rather than comparing headline prices alone.

This method prevents a Digital Edition from appearing cheaper than a disc-equipped console simply because the accessory cost is hidden in a separate purchase.
Common listing traps and the correct response
- “PS5” with no version name: Ask whether it is the standard disc model or Digital Edition. Require Blu-ray wording or a contents list before assuming a drive.
- “PS5 Pro bundle” with a drive in the photograph: Check the written contents. If the drive is not listed, ask the seller to confirm that it ships in the box.
- “Ready for discs” or “disc compatible” wording: Compatibility is not inclusion. Determine whether the CFI-ZDD1 is already supplied or must be purchased separately.
- A partial CFI number: Request the full model identifier. CFI-2000, CFI-2100 and CFI-7000 have different roles in Sony’s compatibility information.
- Marketplace bundles assembled by a seller: Ask whether the package is factory-sealed or seller-assembled and request an itemized contents list.
- Stock photographs reused across versions: Give priority to the specification panel, box-label image and a current photograph of the exact unit.
- Drive listed as an “option” at checkout: Treat the base console as drive-free unless the option is selected and the final order summary names the drive.
- Used console with no box: Ask for the CFI label and a photograph of the drive bay or installed drive, then compare the model with CFI-ZDD1 compatibility information.
What to do when the listing is ambiguous
Pause the purchase rather than trying to infer the answer from color, shape or price. Send the seller three precise questions:

If the seller cannot answer or refuses to provide a model photograph, choose a listing whose version and contents are explicit. A clear listing is more valuable than a small apparent discount when the missing accessory would have to be bought separately.

Buying decisions by use case
You already own PS5 and PS4 discs
Choose a listing that explicitly includes a drive, or budget for CFI-ZDD1 after confirming compatibility. A Digital Edition title alone does not meet a disc-based library requirement.
You buy games digitally and never use discs
A Digital Edition may meet your needs, but verify that the lower price is being compared with a similarly equipped standard console and the same storage and regional bundle. Do not pay for a drive you will not use, and do not assume that a Pro bundle includes one.
You want a PS5 Pro and may use discs later
Decide whether the bundle includes CFI-ZDD1. If it does not, confirm that the console is a CFI-7000 Pro model listed as compatible before adding the accessory cost.

Ask the recipient whether physical discs matter, then select a listing whose version is written clearly on the order confirmation. The words “Digital Edition” should be treated as a deliberate no-drive choice, not as a minor variation in naming.
What the model number can—and cannot—prove
The CFI identifier is a verification tool, not a substitute for the bundle description. It can help establish whether a Digital Edition or Pro console can use the official drive, and it can expose a mismatch between a seller’s title and the photographed hardware. It cannot prove that a drive was packed in a particular retailer’s box, whether a used seller removed an accessory, or whether a pictured drive belongs to the order.
Use three independent confirmations whenever possible: the exact version name, a written contents list and a legible CFI label. If one of those conflicts with another—for example, “Digital Edition” in the title but a drive listed in the contents—ask the seller to resolve the conflict in writing before placing the order.

- Read the complete title and identify Digital Edition, standard PS5 or Pro.
- Confirm Blu-ray wording for a standard disc-equipped listing.
- Check the “In the box” section for a physically included drive.
- Inspect photographs for the console and box labels.
- Record the complete CFI model number.
- For a Digital Edition or Pro without a drive, verify CFI-ZDD1 compatibility.
- Add the separate drive cost to the total when comparing offers.
- Remember that CFI-ZDD1 pairing requires an internet connection during setup.
- Save the seller’s written confirmation if the listing was ambiguous.
The decisive distinction is simple: “Digital Edition” means no drive, a standard PS5 listing needs explicit Blu-ray and contents confirmation, and PS5 Pro requires a bundle-specific check. Once those points and the CFI number agree, you can tell whether the listing includes a disc drive without guessing from the headline.
