The dependable test is the license and what you must use to launch the game: a disc edition includes a physical game disc and needs a PS5 with a compatible disc drive; a digital edition is downloaded from PlayStation Store and is tied to a digital entitlement. A game can look identical in your library after installation, so check the package, product listing, console model and any upgrade history rather than relying on the title or an icon alone.
Disc versus digital: the distinction that matters
A PS5 disc game is delivered on a physical disc. You install its data on the console, but the disc remains the proof that you own the license for play. PlayStation’s support guidance says the disc must be inserted whenever you play a disc-based game. That means two requirements apply at once: the game must include a physical disc, and the PS5 must have a compatible disc drive.

A digital PS5 game is delivered as a download from PlayStation Store. Once the download is ready, you launch it from the Games home. There is no game disc to insert, but you need the PlayStation account that owns the entitlement, enough storage for the installation and a network connection for the download and applicable updates.
Both formats install files to the internal SSD or an approved expansion location. Seeing a game tile, an install progress bar or the game’s icon in the library therefore does not, by itself, tell you whether the license came from a disc or a download.

The final row describes the practical difference in how access is delivered, not a promise about account sharing or resale policies. Always follow the current PlayStation terms for those activities.
How to identify a physical PS5 game package
Read the edition and format wording
Start with the front, spine and back of the box. Look for explicit wording such as disc, physical or PS5 game disc. A package that says digital, download, download code or code in box is not the same as a retail disc edition, even if the artwork and game title are identical.
Read the contents panel or the seller’s item description as well. It should state whether the package contains a disc, a voucher code, or both. If the description never says what is included, treat the format as unconfirmed and ask the seller before paying. Do not infer the format from a screenshot, a product photograph showing only the cover, or the general name of the game.
Inspect the actual disc when you have the package
If you can open the case, a PS5 game disc is decisive evidence. The disc label should identify the game and platform. Keep the disc with the case: the console uses it as the continuing license check after installation. A box without a disc may be an empty replacement case, a download-code package or a used listing whose contents are incomplete.
Check for mixed-generation packages
Some releases contain PS4 and PS5 versions, or a PS4 disc that qualifies for a digital PS5 upgrade. Do not assume that the presence of a PS5 game tile means the package itself contains a native PS5 disc. Read the package’s included-platform and upgrade language and keep the original disc if the upgrade instructions require it.
How to identify the format in an online listing
Use the product format field first
On a retailer or marketplace page, find the field labelled Format, Edition, Media or Platform. The useful evidence is an unambiguous value such as physical disc, PS5 disc, digital download or download code. Read the full item description and the “what’s included” section before relying on the title.
Separate the seller’s listing from the game’s name
The same game title can appear as a disc, a digital download, a deluxe bundle and a code-only offer. Search results frequently shorten those distinctions. Open the specific offer, verify the edition, and confirm that the seller is describing a PS5 item rather than a PS4 product or a soundtrack, season pass or in-game currency.

Do not rely on a supposed universal icon
Official PlayStation pages explain the play requirements for disc and downloaded games but do not establish one universal icon or box mark used for every game and every retailer. A symbol can be a seller’s own filter or a platform badge. Treat explicit format and contents wording as stronger evidence than an unsourced icon.
Resolve uncertain listings before purchase
- Check whether the price is for a disc, a code, or an account-based entitlement.
- Confirm the listed platform says PS5, not only PS4.
- Read whether shipping is involved; a shipped case usually indicates a physical item, but it is not proof if the listing says the case contains a code.
- Look for a statement about region, language or account activation when the seller is outside your market.
- Save a copy of the format and contents description in case the delivered item differs.
If any of those points are missing, ask the seller a direct question: “Does this purchase include a PS5 game disc, or is it a digital code/download?” A clear written answer is safer than guessing from artwork.
Why an installed game does not reveal its format
Installation is not a format test. A disc game copies most or all of its data to storage, so its icon can look like a downloaded game after installation. Conversely, a digital game may have been copied from a backup or moved between storage devices. The decisive check is what PlayStation requires when you start the game.
Signs that the installed game is disc-based
- The console asks you to insert a disc before launching or returns you to the home screen when the disc is removed.
- You installed the game after inserting a physical disc, and the same disc is required for later sessions.
- The case or listing identifies a physical PS5 disc that matches the installed title.
Signs that the installed game is digital
- You downloaded it from PlayStation Store while signed in to the purchasing account.
- The game starts without any disc in the drive.
- Your Game Library or transaction history shows the digital purchase or a redeemed code.
A disc can be in the drive for another game, and a digital title can be installed while a different disc is inserted. Test the particular game: eject every disc, then try to start it. If the console requests that title’s disc, the installation is using a disc license. If it starts normally and the owning account is signed in, it is using a digital entitlement. This test does not identify a game that is covered by a special upgrade until you check the upgrade rules.

Disc-drive PS5 models
A standard PS5 configuration with a built-in compatible drive can install and play PS5 game discs. Insert the disc with the correct orientation for your console, follow the on-screen installation prompt, and leave the disc inserted whenever you play. A drive does not make a digital purchase physical; it only gives the console the hardware needed to read a disc.
PS5 Digital Edition
PlayStation describes the PS5 Digital Edition as an all-digital console without a disc drive. A PS4 or PS5 game disc therefore cannot be inserted or used on that console. You must obtain the game digitally unless your exact console model supports a separately sold drive.
Optional drives on slim model groups
The current PlayStation console product information lists an optional drive for specified slim model groups identified as CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. Compatibility is model-specific. Find the CFI model number on the console, packaging or system information, then compare it with the drive’s official compatibility statement before buying. Do not assume that every Digital Edition, every regional variant or an older chassis accepts the same accessory.

Adding a compatible drive changes the hardware available to the console; it does not convert an existing digital license into a disc or provide a disc copy of a game. You still need to own the physical game if you want to play from a disc.
The PS4-disc-to-PS5-upgrade exception
An eligible PS4 disc can sometimes unlock a digital PS5 version through PlayStation’s upgrade process. In that situation the PS5 version is digital in the sense that its software is downloaded, but the original PS4 disc remains the license key. PlayStation’s upgrade guidance requires you to insert the PS4 disc each time you play the upgraded PS5 version.
- Confirm that the particular PS4 game and edition is eligible for the upgrade and that the offer applies in your region.
- Insert the PS4 disc in a PS5 with a compatible disc drive and sign in to the account that will claim the upgrade.
- Open the game hub or the relevant PlayStation Store upgrade offer and follow the on-screen steps.
- Download the PS5 version after the entitlement is added.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you launch the upgraded PS5 version.
The upgrade does not make the PS4 disc usable on a PS5 Digital Edition. PlayStation support explicitly states that PS4 discs cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition console. If you own only a Digital Edition, you need a qualifying digital purchase or another digital entitlement instead of a disc-based upgrade.
Because eligibility can vary by game, edition and region, read the game’s current upgrade conditions rather than assuming every PS4 disc has the same offer. A disc that contains only a PS4 version is still a physical PS4 license even when an upgrade download is available.
What playing each format looks like
Installing and playing a disc edition
- Verify that the console has a compatible disc drive and that the disc is intended for PS5 or an eligible PS4-to-PS5 path.
- Insert the disc. The PS5 begins copying the game and may ask you to download an update.
- Wait until the playable portion is ready; a complete installation may continue in the background.
- Leave the same disc in the drive when selecting the game from the Games home.
- Eject the disc only after closing the game if you want to use another disc; removing it while playing will eventually prevent license verification.
Deleting the installed data does not delete the physical license. Reinsert the disc later to reinstall, subject to available storage and any required updates.
Installing and playing a digital edition
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open Game Library or PlayStation Store and select the owned game.
- Choose Download and check the installation location and available storage.
- Wait for the game to reach the playable state and allow updates to finish when required.
- Launch it from the Games home without inserting a disc.
If the download button is missing, check the account, edition and region before buying the game again. A different account may own the license, the offer may be for PS4 rather than PS5, or the item may be a code that has not yet been redeemed.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: assuming every PS5 case contains a disc
Some products use a case for a code or a bundle. Correction: read the contents statement and open the package, if it is yours, to verify the disc before discarding any voucher or receipt.

Mistake: treating a download code as a digital purchase already attached to your account
A code is a delivery method. Until it is redeemed on the correct account, the game may not appear in that account’s library. Redeem it carefully and keep proof of purchase; do not publish the code in a support request or public post.
Mistake: buying a disc for a Digital Edition
The console cannot read a disc without a compatible drive. Check the CFI model and the current accessory compatibility information first. If the model has no compatible drive option, choose the digital edition of the game instead.

An upgraded PS5 download can still be tied to the original PS4 disc. Keep that disc and insert it whenever the upgrade instructions require it. Selling or lending the disc can remove your ability to launch the upgraded version.
Mistake: using the game title as proof of the edition
Titles are reused across editions and generations. Match the exact listing, SKU or package contents to the platform and format you intend to buy.
Mistake: confusing a game disc with an installation disc or bonus disc
Bundles may include multiple discs or bonus media. Identify the disc that carries the game license and read the installation instructions. If the seller cannot explain which disc is playable, treat the listing as incomplete.

Use this sequence when the format is unclear:
- Choose the delivery method. Decide whether you want a physical disc or a download. Consider whether you need to resell, lend or collect a case, but do not assume those options apply to a digital entitlement.
- Check the console. Confirm whether your PS5 has a drive. For a Digital Edition, record the exact CFI model and verify whether the current optional drive is listed for that model group.
- Verify the listing. Read the format, edition, platform and included-contents fields. Reject a listing that identifies only the game title.
- Check generation and upgrades. Make sure a PS4 disc, PS5 disc, native digital PS5 game or upgrade is the item you actually want.
- Confirm the license condition. Ask whether a disc must remain inserted, whether a code is unused, and whether the offer is restricted by region or account.
- Keep the evidence. Save the receipt, code packaging and listing description until the game launches successfully.
Examples that settle common cases
You see a sealed PS5 case in a shop
Read the package for disc or physical wording and check that a disc is inside. If it is, you need a drive-equipped PS5, and the disc must remain inserted for play. If the package contains only a download code, redeem it on your account and treat the game as digital.

You bought a game online and it is already in your library
Check the transaction or redemption history for the account currently signed in. Start the game with no disc inserted. If it launches, it is using a digital entitlement. If the console requests a disc, identify the physical disc that was used for installation or an upgrade.

You own a PS4 disc and see a PS5 download option
Follow the game-specific upgrade terms. If the upgrade is eligible, download the PS5 version but retain and insert the PS4 disc whenever you play. The download does not make the PS4 disc usable on a Digital Edition console.
You have a Digital Edition and a friend offers a disc
Do not buy or borrow the disc until you verify that your exact model supports a compatible optional drive. Without a drive, the disc cannot be read. A digital purchase is the straightforward alternative.
The official wording in plain language
PlayStation’s PS5 Quick Start Guide for the CFI-71XX model group states: "You can play a game that you downloaded from PlayStation Store." That sentence describes the digital path. PlayStation’s disc-play support instructions describe the other path: install from the disc and keep the disc inserted while playing. Together, those instructions provide the practical test—identify what delivered the license and what the console asks for at launch.

When to contact the seller or PlayStation Support
Contact the seller before purchase when the listing does not state whether the item is a disc or a code, when the photograph conflicts with the description, or when the platform generation is unclear. After purchase, contact the seller if the package is missing the promised disc or the code is already redeemed.
Use PlayStation Support when a confirmed digital purchase is absent from the correct account, an eligible upgrade does not appear, or a disc is repeatedly rejected after you have checked its condition and compatibility. Have the receipt, account details, console model and exact game edition ready. Support can determine entitlement and compatibility; a marketplace seller generally cannot change an account license.
Bottom line
Look for explicit disc/physical or digital/download wording, verify what the package actually includes, and test the game with no disc inserted if it is already installed. A disc edition needs a compatible drive and the disc at every play session. A digital edition comes from PlayStation Store and launches from the owning account. Treat PS4-to-PS5 upgrades separately: the PS5 software may be downloaded, while the original PS4 disc still has to be inserted. Finally, check the exact PS5 model—especially Digital Edition slim groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100—before spending money on any physical game or optional drive.
