To tell whether a Prime Day deal is actually a good price, compare the exact item’s current price with its own recent price history, then check the full checkout cost and purchase terms. A large percentage-off badge—or a low price on a chart—doesn’t by itself prove the item is worth buying or the best offer available.
1. Make sure you’re comparing the exact same item
Before judging the price, verify the listing’s model number and configuration: size, color, quantity, and whether it includes a bundle or accessory. Also note the seller, item condition, and shipping terms. A chart or competing listing is useful only if it refers to a comparable item. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking identifying details such as model number, size, and color when comparison shopping.

2. Check the item’s price history
On eligible Amazon product pages, look for the Price history link and compare today’s price with the item’s recent range and previous lows. Amazon describes 30-, 90-, and 365-day views; which views are available can vary by country and rollout. Use the longest relevant window offered rather than relying on a short slice that might make an ordinary price look exceptional. Amazon Staff puts the purpose plainly: “During Prime Day, price history can help customers quickly understand whether a deal is lower than a product’s recent price.” Amazon’s Prime Day shopping guidance explains the feature.
Read the chart as context, not a verdict. If today’s price is near the item’s usual range, or only a little below recent prices, the discount may be less compelling than the badge suggests. A price below the item’s recent lows is stronger evidence of a sale, but it still says nothing by itself about quality, seller reliability, or prices at other retailers.

3. Treat the crossed-out price as a reference, not proof
Amazon distinguishes between reference-price labels. It says List Price is a price validated from information submitted by sellers, manufacturers, or suppliers. Typical Price, also shown as “Was” Price in some contexts, is the median price customers paid on Amazon over the preceding 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. Amazon also says it aims for deal prices to be the lowest in at least the previous 30 days. These are Amazon’s definitions and stated aim—not a guarantee that any particular offer is the best value now. Amazon’s explanation of Prime Day pricing describes these terms.
So don’t judge a deal by subtracting the sale price from the crossed-out figure or by trusting the percentage alone. Ask whether the current price is low against the item’s own recent history and comparable offers.

4. Cross-check a chart if you need another view
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Prime Day advice names Keepa and CamelCamelCamel as tools for viewing Amazon price history. Treat another tracker as a second reference, not an absolute record: confirm that its listing matches the product variation, seller, condition, and shipping terms you’re considering. The recommendation is limited to using these tools to view Amazon price history; it does not establish that every chart captures every seller or product variation.
5. Compare the total cost and the terms
A low item price can be offset by delivery charges, taxes, handling, or other fees. Compare the complete checkout cost, not just the price shown on the product page. Check whether the offer requires a bundle or other condition, and read the listing’s fine print, condition description, seller information, delivery estimate, and return rules for sale items. The FTC advises shoppers to account for shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees when comparing offers.

6. Decide against a target you set for yourself
There is no single discount percentage that makes every product a good deal. Decide what price you’d be comfortable paying for an item you already want or need, then use its history and the total cost to see whether today’s offer meets that target. If the price is ordinary or only marginally below recent prices, waiting or checking another retailer may be more sensible than reacting to an urgency badge. Amazon says shoppers can set target-price alerts through Alexa for Shopping; availability and feature details may vary. Amazon’s shopping guidance describes the alert feature.

- Same model and configuration, including size, color, quantity, and bundle.
- Current total checkout cost, including shipping, taxes, and fees.
- Recent price range and lows, using the longest relevant history view available.
- Seller, item condition, delivery estimate, and return terms.
Amazon reported in 2026 that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature since its 2024 launch, and that customers checked it three times per month on average. These are Amazon-reported usage figures, not independently audited evidence that the feature identifies a good deal.
