No single visual trick can prove that a loose Pokémon promo card is genuine. The dependable first pass is to identify the exact promotion and release, compare the card with an official image, check several printed and physical details together, and use a bright-light screen. If anything still conflicts—or if the card is valuable—have a trading-card specialist examine it in person. A PSA certification lookup can support the check for a graded card, but a matching number does not prove that the physical slab or card is authentic.
What counts as a Pokémon promo card?
A promo card is issued for a particular promotion, event, product, magazine, game release, tournament, or other special distribution rather than as an ordinary card in a numbered expansion set. That origin matters because two cards with similar artwork can have different borders, symbols, languages, numbering, or finishes.

Before judging authenticity, write down exactly what the card claims to be:
- Pokémon and card name
- Language
- Card number or promo identifier
- Claimed promotion, event, product, or release
- Whether it is loose or inside a graded holder
Do not begin with a generic checklist and assume every promo follows it. Promo releases span different eras, products, and languages. A feature that is normal on one release may be wrong for another.

Use the promo symbol as an identification clue
An independent card-identification reference describes promo cards as using a black star with the word “PROMO” in place of a normal set symbol. That is useful for identifying what a card may be, but it is not a complete authenticity rule. Check the symbol together with the card’s set information, collector number, language, artwork, and claimed release.
A missing, unusually placed, or differently printed symbol should prompt closer comparison with the exact release. It should not, by itself, be treated as proof of a counterfeit, particularly when languages and eras differ.
Why one “tell” cannot settle the question
Counterfeiters can copy an obvious logo, symbol, holographic effect, or certification number. Genuine cards also vary by printing, region, language, and product. As a result, authenticity is an evidence-collection problem: several details should agree with the same official reference and with the card’s selling context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPokémon Support’s counterfeit guidance recommends becoming familiar with images of official products. That means comparing the card you have with the specific promo it claims to be, not with a random card from the same Pokémon or with a generic image-search result.
An unusual appearance can have innocent explanations, including a different language or release. Conversely, a card can look convincing at a glance while containing a small typography, numbering, or print-registration error. Treat a visual mismatch as a reason to investigate, not as an automatic verdict until the exact release has been ruled in or out.

- Record the card’s claim. Note the Pokémon, card name, language, promo mark or collector number, and the promotion or product named by the seller or packaging.
- Find an official image for that exact release. Use the claimed event, product, or date to narrow the match. Save or display the reference at a size that lets you inspect text and borders.
- Compare the whole layout. Check artwork placement, borders, text blocks, symbols, energy or attack icons, copyright line, collector numbering, and the back design against the same reference.
- Inspect print quality under normal light. Look for spelling errors, inconsistent letter shapes, fuzzy fine text, misaligned layers, unusual color boundaries, or a surface pattern that does not match the reference.
- Perform the bright-light screen. Hold the card up to a bright light and observe how easily light passes through it. Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through, according to Pokémon Support.
- Compare the result as a whole. A card that passes one check can still fail another. Record every mismatch instead of relying on an overall impression.
- Stop before destructive testing. Do not rip, burn, bend, or cut a collectible to inspect its layers. Those actions can destroy a genuine card and do not provide a practical, reversible home test.
- Escalate unresolved or high-value cases. Take the card to a shop that specializes in trading cards or to another qualified specialist for hands-on evaluation.
How to use the bright-light check correctly
Pokémon Support gives this exact guidance: “Counterfeit cards are often easy to see through if you hold them up to a bright light, so this is a good way to identify a fake.” The statement makes a bright-light check a useful screening step, not a guarantee that a card passing it is genuine.
What to do
- Use a bright, steady light source. A small LED flashlight can make observation easier, but it is optional; it does not authenticate the card.
- Hold the card between the light and your eyes, without pressing or bending it.
- Observe whether the card is unusually translucent and whether the light reveals an interior structure that looks inconsistent with a normal printed card.
- Compare the result with a known genuine card from a similar period or product when you have one, while remembering that different cards can use different stock and finishes.
What the check can and cannot tell you
Unusual transparency is a warning sign because counterfeit cards may use thinner or different stock. However, the guidance provides no universal brightness threshold and no card-by-card exception list. A passing result does not establish authenticity, and a card that behaves differently from your comparison card may simply come from another release or language.
Keep the test non-destructive. Do not peel layers, apply heat, soak the card, or use chemicals. A home experiment can reduce the card’s value while leaving the authenticity question unresolved.
Compare the details that counterfeiters commonly get wrong
Once you have the exact reference image, inspect multiple details together. The goal is consistency across the entire card, not a hunt for one magic tell.
Artwork and layout
Compare the position and crop of the illustration, the size of the Pokémon, background elements, borders, and the spacing around text boxes. A counterfeit may use the correct artwork but place it at a subtly different scale or shift the text area by a small amount.

Typography and spelling
Read every line at high magnification. Check the Pokémon name, attacks, rules text, weakness, resistance, retreat symbols, punctuation, accent marks, and copyright line. Pokémon fonts are distinctive; an incorrect letter shape, weight, spacing, or line break can be significant when it does not match the exact release.

Do not treat a font difference as conclusive until you have confirmed the language and edition. Localized cards can use different text, accents, and line wrapping.
Symbols and collector information
Verify the promo symbol, card number, rarity or product mark, and any set or event identifier. Compare their position and size, not merely their presence. Read the number as part of the complete identification: the same Pokémon can have several promos with different identifiers.
Color, edges, and print registration
Look for color boundaries that are too soft or too harsh, shadows that do not line up, and layers that appear offset. A copied card may show registration errors where a genuine print uses clean alignment. Edge cuts that look unusually rough, bright, or inconsistent with the reference also deserve attention.

Surface and finish
Inspect gloss, texture, and any foil or reflective treatment against an image or known example from the same release. Promo products do not all share one universal finish. A different sheen is a clue to investigate, not proof that every card with that sheen is fake.
A limited PSA 2025 Fraud Report search excerpt lists advanced authentication approaches including ink-density comparison, microscopic-pattern alignment, edge analysis, surface fluorescence, print-registration alignment, and tactile surface analysis. Those methods illustrate why difficult cases require specialist equipment and experience; the excerpt is not a complete public testing procedure and should not be treated as one.

Loose card versus graded slab
| Item you have | Useful first checks | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Loose promo card | Identify the exact release, compare with its official image, inspect text, symbols, layout, finish, and use a bright-light screen. | No single visible feature proves authenticity. |
| Card in a PSA holder | Use PSA’s certification lookup, compare the entry with the label and card, inspect the holder, and assess the seller. | A real certification number can be copied onto a counterfeit label or holder; the lookup does not guarantee the physical item. |
How to check a PSA-graded promo without overtrusting the number
For a card in a PSA holder, enter the certification number in PSA’s certification lookup and compare the returned information with the label and the card in front of you. Check the Pokémon, card description, set or promo identity, grade, and any other identifying information shown by the entry.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Then inspect the physical object. Does the card inside match the database description? Does the label correspond to the holder? Does the seller’s photograph show the same item you would receive? Are there signs that the label or holder has been altered or replaced?
PSA warns that counterfeiters can reuse genuine certification numbers obtained from public sources. PSA also explains that its database does not inspect items listed online and does not warrant that a particular physical item is authentic merely because its number appears in the database. Use the lookup as one piece of evidence, not as a substitute for examining the card, holder, and seller.
For an expensive purchase, prefer a trustworthy seller and obtain a qualified in-person opinion before relying on a listing, a seller’s assurance, or a copied number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying context: warning signs, not card-level proof
Where and how a card was offered can help you decide how cautious to be, but context does not replace card inspection.
- Pokémon Support says dramatically underpriced packs are a near-certain warning sign of counterfeit merchandise. That warning concerns packs, not every inexpensive single card.
- Pokémon Support reports the highest instances of counterfeit sales from flea markets. This is a qualitative observation with no published count, percentage, geography-specific rate, or reporting period in the guidance. It does not mean every flea-market card is fake.
- A seller who cannot identify the promotion, language, or card number has provided less useful provenance than one who can show where the card came from.
- Stock photographs, pressure to pay immediately, and refusal to allow reasonable inspection increase transaction risk, but none is a card-level authentication test.
Keep screenshots of the listing, seller messages, price, photographs, and claimed provenance. If the card later proves counterfeit, those records can help with a marketplace dispute or payment claim.

When to ask a specialist
Pokémon Support recommends asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a questionable card. This is the clearest escalation route in the official guidance because a specialist can compare the physical card with known examples and use magnification or other examination methods that are not available in a casual home check.
Seek hands-on help promptly when:
- The card is expensive or emotionally important.
- The exact promotion cannot be identified confidently.
- Several details disagree with the official reference.
- The bright-light result is unusual.
- The card is in a slab but the holder, label, or card does not fully correspond to the lookup.
- The seller refuses additional photographs or physical inspection.
Ask the shop to explain which observations support its opinion and whether the conclusion is an identification, a strong counterfeit warning, or a definitive authentication service. Not every store offers formal authentication, so distinguish an experienced opinion from a guarantee.
Common mistakes that produce false confidence
Relying only on translucency
Light passing through a card is a useful warning screen, but it is not a universal pass/fail test. Counterfeits can vary in stock, and genuine cards can differ by release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using a generic promo checklist
The black “PROMO” star can help identify a promo, yet it does not establish that the artwork, number, language, and printing are correct for the claimed release. Always return to the exact product or event reference.
Assuming a database match proves a slab
A copied public certification number can point to a genuine record while the physical label and card are counterfeit. Match the object, not just the digits.
Declaring a card fake from a photograph
Camera white balance, compression, glare, and resolution can change the appearance of color, texture, and foil. Request clear photographs of the front, back, edges, label, and holder, then obtain a physical inspection when the stakes justify it.
Damaging the card to “check the layers”
Ripping or bending can destroy a genuine collectible and may not distinguish a counterfeit reliably. Use only reversible observation and professional examination.

| High-value card or disputed purchase | Obtain an in-person specialist opinion before relying on the card’s value. | The financial risk is greater than the convenience of a home screen. |
| PSA number matches but the holder or card looks wrong | Treat the item as unresolved and contact the seller or seek professional review. | A certification number can be copied. |
What a careful conclusion looks like
After the checks, describe your confidence accurately. “The card matches the official image and showed no obvious warning signs in a home screen” is more defensible than “the card is definitely real.” If the evidence conflicts, say that the card is questionable and stop short of assigning authenticity until a specialist examines it.
The practical standard is agreement among the exact promo identity, official reference image, printed details, physical observations, and—when applicable—the graded holder and seller context. Bright light, a promo symbol, a database lookup, or a low price can each inform that assessment, but none can carry it alone.
