That in-game marker is Niantic’s confirmation that the Pokémon is shiny. A different color can help you notice something unusual, but it is not proof because regional forms may look different from their standard forms.
The reliable test: check above the CP
When you tap a wild Pokémon, raid boss, research encounter or other Pokémon and enter the encounter screen, look at the area directly above its CP. If the shiny icon is displayed there, the Pokémon you are viewing is shiny.

Niantic’s Pokémon GO Help Center describes this icon as the way to tell that an encountered Pokémon is shiny. The marker is more dependable than judging the model’s colors, lighting or animation on your phone.

How to check an encounter
- Tap the Pokémon to open the encounter.
- Look above its CP for the shiny icon.
- Use the icon as the deciding test. If it is present, the encounter is shiny. If you only see an unusual color but no icon, do not assume you have found a shiny.
The icon is an encounter indicator. It is not necessary to compare the Pokémon with a picture on a website, change your screen settings or rely on memory of the standard color.

Why color alone can mislead you
Pokémon GO includes regional forms whose colors, body shapes and poses differ from the standard form. Those differences are part of the form, not automatically evidence of a shiny variant.
Regional-form example
Niantic uses Rattata to illustrate the problem: Kanto Rattata is purple and four-legged, while Alolan Rattata is black and upright. Seeing the black, upright version does not by itself mean you encountered a shiny Pokémon; it may simply be the Alolan regional form.
Regional forms can also have shiny variants. That means both form and shiny status can affect a Pokémon’s appearance. Confirm the status with the icon above CP rather than trying to identify every possible color combination.

Not every Pokémon can appear shiny at all times
Some species do not have an available shiny variant in Pokémon GO. Niantic also notes that certain species have shiny encounters restricted to particular events. Its Help Center gives Smeargle, Unown and Meltan as examples of Pokémon whose shiny availability can be event-limited.
Therefore, the question “Can this species be shiny?” has two parts:
- Does the species have a shiny variant in Pokémon GO? Not every species does.
- Is that variant available in the current encounter pool? Availability can depend on an event or other time-limited release.
How to verify current availability
For a particular species, consult Pokémon GO’s current official event announcements and in-game event notices. Availability changes, and a species that has appeared as shiny during one event may not be available in every later encounter period. The shiny icon still remains the final check when you are face-to-face with an encounter.

The Ditto disguise exception
Ditto creates a special identification problem because it can disguise itself as another Pokémon. A shiny Ditto does not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon. However, it can disguise itself as a non-shiny Pokémon.
That rule means you should not reject a possible Ditto simply because the Pokémon it resembles does not look shiny. The apparent disguise can be non-shiny even when the Ditto revealed after capture is shiny. Conversely, the disguise’s color is not a substitute for the shiny icon or for the result of the encounter.
Confirming shiny registration in the Pokédex
Pokémon GO tracks shiny forms separately from standard forms. Catching the ordinary version of a species does not register its shiny form as caught.

What the Shiny Pokédex shows
Open the Pokédex and select the Shiny category to see your shiny-form registrations. If you have caught only the standard form, the shiny entry can still appear as an outline. That outline indicates that the shiny form has not yet been registered; it is not evidence that your earlier standard catch was shiny.
Encounter confirmation versus collection history
The icon above CP answers “Is this current encounter shiny?” The Shiny Pokédex answers “Have I registered this species’ shiny form?” They are related but separate checks: an encounter can be confirmed as shiny before you catch it, while the Pokédex updates your collection record after the shiny form is obtained.
A quick decision checklist
- Have you tapped the Pokémon and entered the encounter screen?
- Did you look specifically above the CP?
- Is the shiny icon visible there?
- Are you relying on color even though the Pokémon could be a regional form?
- Does the species have a shiny variant, and is it currently available through an official event or encounter source?
- If Ditto is possible, are you remembering that a shiny Ditto may use a non-shiny disguise?
- After catching it, did you check the Shiny Pokédex for the separate shiny registration?
Common questions answered
“The Pokémon is a different color. Is it shiny?”
Not necessarily. Regional forms can have different colors and body shapes without being shiny. Enter the encounter and check above CP for the icon.
“What does the shiny symbol look like?”
It is the shiny icon displayed above the Pokémon’s CP during an encounter. Niantic treats that on-screen marker as the confirmation signal; the Pokémon’s color is only a supporting visual clue.
“Does every Pokémon have a shiny version?”
No. Niantic says that not all Pokémon in the game have shiny variants available. Some, including Smeargle, Unown and Meltan, have had shiny encounters limited to specific events.
“Can a shiny Ditto look non-shiny?”
Yes. A shiny Ditto can disguise itself as a non-shiny Pokémon, although it will not disguise itself as another shiny Pokémon. Do not use the apparent disguise’s color as your only test.

“Why is the shiny entry only an outline in my Pokédex?”
The standard form and shiny form are registered separately. If you have not obtained the shiny form, its Shiny Pokédex entry may remain an outline even though the ordinary species is already registered.
