How to Tell Whether a Paper Was Written by AI or a Human

You usually cannot determine authorship reliably from a finished paper alone. AI detectors estimate whether wording resembles patterns associated with generated text; they do not prove who wrote it. Human writing can be falsely flagged, AI-assisted writing can be missed, and a score is not the probability that a particular person used AI.

The fairest approach is to treat any detector result or stylistic suspicion as a prompt for review. Check the applicable assignment or publication rules, verify the paper’s sources and reasoning, examine its development when records exist, and give the author a chance to explain the work before drawing a conclusion.

What a paper review can actually establish

Authorship is a historical fact, while most available checks examine the finished text. A detector can identify statistical or structural features that occur more often in text produced by language models, but it cannot observe who typed the words, what tools were used, or how much a person edited a draft. Its output is therefore an estimate about the text, not evidence that reaches the standard of proof by itself.

Detectors commonly inspect features such as perplexity, burstiness, and sentence structure. In broad terms, perplexity measures how predictable a sequence of words is to a language model, while burstiness describes variation in sentence patterns or word choices. Human writers can produce highly predictable, uniform prose, and a model-assisted draft can be heavily revised into text that no longer has the same statistical profile. The result is an uncertain signal rather than an authorship test.

Two error types matter:

  • False positive: a person wrote the text without generative AI, but the system labels it likely AI-generated.
  • False negative: AI contributed to the text, but the system labels it likely human or cannot detect the contribution.

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) explains that an “AI score” alone is insufficient to bring a misconduct allegation. Its guidance also notes that performance is less reliable when text is short, edited, or combined with human writing; it gives fewer than 300 words as an example of short text, not as a universal cutoff. Read the full TEQSA guidance on detecting AI-generated text for the regulator’s evidentiary cautions.

Why style alone is weak evidence

A paper may sound unusually polished, simple, repetitive, formal, or uniform. Those traits can be useful prompts for questions, but each also occurs in ordinary human work. A student may have revised carefully, used a writing center, learned a new disciplinary style, or written in a second language. Conversely, generated prose can contain errors, awkward transitions, or personal quirks after editing.

Contextual discrepancies are more informative than a vague impression. Vanderbilt University lists examples such as factual errors, unexplained differences from a writer’s previous work, and suspicious references or links. None proves AI authorship. They identify parts of the paper that need verification. Vanderbilt’s guidance states: “There are currently no foolproof methods for detecting the use of generative AI.” That is an institutional warning, not a universal legal or academic rule.

Evidence that is stronger than a detector score

1. Start with the governing rules

Before examining the prose, read the course syllabus, assessment brief, journal instructions, publisher policy, or workplace rule that applies. Policies differ: some prohibit generative assistance, some allow brainstorming or editing, and some require disclosure. The same use can therefore be acceptable in one setting and a violation in another. Your review should answer the policy question actually at issue, not assume that every use of AI is forbidden.

2. Verify every important reference

Open the cited books, articles, datasets, court decisions, or web pages. Confirm that each source exists, that the author and title are correct, and that it supports the proposition attached to it. Check links for dead pages and look for quotations that cannot be located. A fabricated citation is a concrete reliability problem to investigate; it does not, on its own, identify the writer or prove AI use. A human can misremember a source, and an AI-assisted draft can contain entirely genuine references.

3. Test the paper’s substance

Look for factual errors, claims that conflict with assigned readings, unexplained jumps in logic, or terminology used in a way that does not fit the subject. Compare the argument with the question asked and with the evidence cited. A sudden change in quality or vocabulary compared with earlier work can justify a conversation, but it may also reflect tutoring, collaboration permitted by the course, or a topic that the writer understands better. Record the specific inconsistency instead of describing the whole paper as “AI-like.”

4. Examine how the work developed

Drafts, notes, outlines, document version history, tracked changes, laboratory notebooks, source annotations, and in-class writing can show development over time. They are contextual evidence, not an automatic authenticity certificate: a writer may draft offline, paste a legitimate section, or revise extensively. TEQSA, the University of Toronto, and the University of British Columbia all identify process evidence as more useful than relying on a detector alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Ask the author to explain the work

A short, neutral discussion can test whether the author understands the thesis, evidence, and decisions in the paper. Ask how the question was narrowed, why a particular source was chosen, what a difficult paragraph means, and what the author would change after feedback. TEQSA describes a viva or questions about the work as a possible form of evidence. The aim is explanation, not an ambush: give the author the paper and the concern in advance where policy permits, allow time to respond, and keep a record of the conversation.

A fair review sequence

Use the following order so that a weak signal does not drive the entire inquiry:

  1. Identify the rule. Write down what assistance is prohibited, allowed, or required to be disclosed, and which procedure governs a suspected violation.
  2. Preserve the material. Keep the submitted file, its metadata where policy allows, and any relevant drafts. Do not alter the original while investigating.
  3. Check sources and claims. Verify references and quotations first, then note factual or disciplinary inconsistencies with page or paragraph locations.
  4. Compare appropriate work samples. Use earlier or in-class writing only when the comparison is permitted and reasonably similar in task, genre, and support. Differences are questions to explore, not a numerical baseline of “normal” writing.
  5. Review process records. Examine drafts, revision history, notes, and feedback for a coherent development trail. Absence of a record is not proof that no drafting occurred.
  6. Invite an explanation. Ask open questions about the argument, sources, and revisions. Distinguish an inability to explain one passage from a conclusion about the entire paper.
  7. Use a detector only if policy allows. Record the product, version or date shown by the service, text supplied, length, and any editing or translation. Treat the output as one piece of corroborating or disconfirming information.
  8. Apply the formal process. Weigh all evidence under the institution’s standard, give the author notice and a chance to respond, and keep confidential material out of unapproved services.

How to interpret AI detectors

A detector’s percentage or label is often misunderstood as “the chance this person used AI.” It is not that. The system estimates how closely the submitted text matches patterns in its model and reference data. Different tools can disagree, and results can change as writing, translation, editing, and detection systems evolve.

Method What it contributes Main limitation Appropriate use
AI detector A pattern-based estimate using features such as predictability, variation, and sentence structure. False positives and false negatives; weaker with short, edited, or mixed-authorship text; score is not authorship probability. A documented signal that prompts other checks, only where local policy permits.
Reference verification Direct evidence about whether cited material exists and supports the claim. Incorrect citations can result from ordinary human error and do not identify the writer. Check every consequential source, quotation, and link.
Draft and version review Context about planning, revision, and feedback over time. Records may be incomplete, offline, or unavailable; legitimate writers can paste or rewrite sections. Assess the development of the submitted argument, not merely the presence of edits.
Comparison with prior or in-class work Context about an author’s usual knowledge, vocabulary, and approach. Tasks, support, topics, and language conditions may differ substantially. Use comparable samples to formulate questions, never as a standalone verdict.
Author conversation or viva First-hand explanation of reasoning, sources, and choices. Stress, disability, language, or unfamiliarity with oral questioning can affect performance. Ask focused, policy-compliant questions and consider the answers with the written evidence.

Short, edited, translated, and mixed-authorship papers

Text length changes what a detector can observe. A few paragraphs contain fewer stylistic signals than a long paper, so a result can be unstable. TEQSA uses fewer than 300 words as an example of short text; it does not establish a universal minimum length at which a detector becomes reliable. Do not convert that example into a pass/fail rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Editing creates another problem. A person may substantially revise generated text, or a language model may polish a person’s draft. Translation, grammar correction, collaborative writing, quotations, code-generated passages, and jointly authored sections can all produce a mixture of signals. If the policy distinguishes permitted editing from prohibited generation, identify which contribution is alleged and seek evidence about that contribution rather than labeling the whole document.

Language background also matters. UBC warns that detector metrics may be biased against non-native English speakers. A formal or grammatically simple style can reflect language learning, accessibility tools, or disciplinary convention. Any review should avoid treating an accent in writing as evidence of misconduct and should provide an accessible way to explain the work.

What universities say about detector use

University of Toronto

The University of Toronto’s teaching and learning guidance, updated June 18, 2025, says: “The University does not support the use of AI-detection software programs on student work.” It points to reliability, privacy, and ethical concerns and recommends discussing the work with the student or using short in-person assessments. This is that university’s policy and guidance; another institution may set a different rule. Read its Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom FAQs for the complete context.

University of British Columbia

UBC says it has not enabled Turnitin’s AI-detection feature while it awaits more evidence about effectiveness, accuracy, and bias mitigation. Its guidance directs instructors to follow the ordinary academic-misconduct process and discuss identified irregularities with the student. The page was updated September 14, 2026. Consult UBC’s GenAI and academic-integrity guidance for its current institutional position.

University of Missouri System

The University of Missouri System cautions against asking ChatGPT or similar systems to decide whether a paper was AI-written. It describes both false positives and false negatives and notes that results can change as writing and detection tools evolve. Its examples of errors are institution-specific, so they should not be presented as a universal error rate. Its AI plagiarism and cheating guidance also raises privacy concerns.

TEQSA and Vanderbilt

TEQSA’s Australian higher-education guidance says detector output alone is insufficient for a misconduct allegation and emphasizes process evidence and questioning. Vanderbilt’s academic-integrity guidance says there are no foolproof detection methods and presents stylistic or citation irregularities as contextual warning signs. These statements describe the institutions that issued them; they do not create a single policy for every school, journal, or employer. See Vanderbilt’s academic-integrity and generative-AI page alongside the TEQSA resource.

Privacy and procedural safeguards

Uploading a student’s or author’s paper to an outside detector may disclose personal data, unpublished research, copyrighted material, or confidential institutional information. Before submitting text, check where the service stores data, whether it uses submissions to improve its models, who can access results, and whether the institution has approved the service. If the policy does not authorize external processing, use local review methods or seek a privacy officer’s advice.

Procedural fairness is as important as technical accuracy. Tell the author what concern is being examined, keep the allegation specific, and avoid presenting a detector score as a finding. Permit a response, consider evidence that cuts against the allegation, and apply the same standard to comparable cases. Do not publish or circulate a student’s paper as an example without authorization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions that produce useful explanations

Open questions are more informative than asking, “Did you use AI?” and waiting for a yes or no. Depending on the setting and permitted process, ask:

  • What is the paper’s central claim, and how did you narrow the topic?
  • Which source most changed your view, and where does that change appear?
  • How did you decide that this source supports the sentence on page or paragraph number?
  • What does this technical term mean in your own argument?
  • Which section did you revise after feedback, and what did you change?
  • If you had another day, which evidence would you add or remove?

These questions test ownership of the reasoning without assuming that fluent writing is suspicious. They should be adapted for disability accommodations, language needs, age, and the author’s right to representation under the applicable procedure.

If you are the author and your paper is questioned

Read the relevant policy and ask what evidence is being relied upon. Keep drafts, outlines, notes, source PDFs, feedback, and version history in their original form. Prepare a concise explanation of your thesis, research path, and revisions; identify any permitted tools or assistance and disclose them as required. If a citation is wrong, correct the factual error without treating the correction as an admission of authorship. Use the institution’s appeal, support, or representation process if a decision is made against you.

A practical decision framework

Before reaching a conclusion, write answers to four separate questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Rule: What specific conduct does the governing policy prohibit or require disclosure of?
  2. Evidence: Which verifiable facts support or contradict that conduct?
  3. Explanation: What did the author say about the sources, argument, and development?
  4. Proportionality: Does the evidence meet the institution’s required standard without relying on an unsupported assumption about writing style?

If the only answer under “Evidence” is a detector label or a feeling that the prose sounds artificial, the record is not strong enough for an authorship verdict. Continue with source checks and a fair conversation, or close the inquiry if the applicable policy does not permit further action.

Bottom line

A paper cannot ordinarily be classified as AI-written or human-written with certainty from its final text. Detectors can supply a fallible pattern signal, while references, substantive accuracy, drafts, version history, comparable work, and an informed conversation provide context. Follow the local rules, protect the author’s private work, document both supporting and contrary evidence, and never treat a detector score or writing style as proof by itself.
