There is no single PC specification for a Soulslike. To find out whether a particular new release will run well, compare your computer with that game’s current system-requirements listing, then account for the listed resolution, graphics settings, upscaling and storage notes. A match with the minimum line means only that your hardware is around the developer’s lower reference configuration; it does not promise a frame rate, smooth frame pacing or the settings you want.
Start with the exact game and its current requirements
Use the title’s own store page, not a genre-wide rule or the requirements of another action RPG. Valve’s Steam Support directs players to each game’s Store page for compatible operating systems and hardware requirements. Listings can be revised after launch, so use the live page for the edition and platform you intend to install.

First confirm that you are looking at the PC version. A console specification, a benchmark for a different edition or an old cached page cannot answer a Windows compatibility question. Also note whether the listing names a particular operating-system family, architecture, DirectX version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaler or storage type. Those notes can matter as much as the headline CPU and GPU names.
Record your PC’s actual configuration
Make a short inventory before comparing anything. Record the model, not just the manufacturer’s brand, because two graphics cards or processors from the same generation can have very different capabilities.

Operating system and architecture
In Windows, open Settings > System > About. Record the Windows edition, version and whether the system is 64-bit. Check the game’s stated operating-system support and architecture. A component match cannot compensate for an unsupported operating system.
Processor
Open Task Manager > Performance > CPU and copy the complete processor name. Compare the exact model family named by the game. A newer-sounding product name is not automatically equivalent to the listed CPU, and a processor with fewer cores or a lower performance level can become the limiting part even when the graphics card is sufficient.
Graphics card and video memory
In Task Manager > Performance > GPU, record the GPU model and dedicated memory. You can also run dxdiag and inspect the Display tab. Use the dedicated video-memory figure when a listing states one; do not substitute shared system memory. Check the DirectX version or feature support requested by the game as a separate requirement.

System memory
Task Manager’s Performance > Memory panel shows installed RAM. Record the total capacity and leave headroom for Windows and background programs. If a game lists 16 GB, a machine with 16 GB installed may have less available while other software is open; that is a practical constraint even though the installed total appears to match.

Storage capacity and type
In File Explorer > This PC, check free space on the drive where the game will be installed. Record whether it is an SSD or HDD. Requirements sometimes distinguish the two. Leave additional working space for updates, shader caches and temporary files rather than treating the download size as the only space needed.
What minimum and recommended really mean
Minimum is a lower reference point
The minimum row describes a configuration the publisher used as a baseline for starting the game under stated conditions. It does not establish a universal frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or smoothness target. If your GPU is below the minimum, the listing provides no reliable basis for expecting acceptable play; if it meets the minimum, you still need to choose conservative settings and verify the result.
Recommended is another reference configuration
Recommended hardware is generally a stronger target, but it is not a guarantee of a particular number of frames per second. Treat it as the listing’s preferred reference for a better experience under its own test conditions. The difference between minimum and recommended can involve the processor, graphics card, RAM, DirectX requirement and storage guidance, so compare every field instead of checking only the GPU.
Requirements vary widely between Soulslikes
Games described with the same genre label can use different engines, streaming systems and rendering features. The examples below range from 8 GB to 16 GB of minimum RAM, from 50 GB to 130 GB of storage and from DirectX 11 to DirectX 12. One title’s requirements cannot stand in for another’s.

These figures are examples from Steam listings and are not a universal Soulslike standard. The years identify the cited listing; check the live page because requirements may change.

The table illustrates why a simple statement such as “a gaming PC can run Soulslikes” is not useful. ELDEN RING lists 12 GB of minimum RAM, Lies of P lists 8 GB, and Black Myth: Wukong lists 16 GB. Their storage requirements are also 60 GB, 50 GB and 130 GB respectively, with different storage guidance for the last title.
A step-by-step compatibility check
- Identify the exact release. Confirm the PC edition, current patch or store listing, operating-system scope and required architecture.
- Copy every requirement. Make a two-column note for minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, video memory, RAM, DirectX, storage capacity and storage type. Include footnotes about resolution, presets and upscaling.
- Inventory your PC. Use the Windows paths above and write down exact model names, dedicated VRAM, installed RAM, free disk space and drive type.
- Normalize the comparison. Compare a CPU with the CPU field, a discrete GPU with the GPU field and dedicated VRAM with stated video-memory figures. Do not compare system RAM with GPU VRAM or use a laptop’s shared-memory number as dedicated VRAM.
- Mark each field. Label it above recommended, between recommended and minimum, at minimum, or below minimum. A single below-minimum field is a compatibility warning even when the other parts are stronger.
- Read the testing notes. If the listing mentions an upscaler, SSD, resolution or preset, treat that condition as part of the requirement rather than an optional footnote.
- Choose a target. Decide whether you want the minimum reference, the recommended reference or a particular resolution and quality level. The listing alone cannot translate your hardware into a guaranteed frame rate.
- Verify after installation. Install the latest graphics driver, start with the game’s default or low preset, and observe frame pacing, stutter, memory use and loading behavior in a demanding area. Adjust one setting group at a time.
How to interpret a mismatch
Graphics card or VRAM below the line
The GPU usually determines rendering resolution and visual settings. If the model or dedicated VRAM is below the stated minimum, lower settings may not remove every limitation, especially when the listing assumes an upscaler. A card that meets the minimum but falls well short of recommended should be treated as a low-to-medium target until testing shows otherwise; do not infer a specific frame rate from the table.
Processor below the line
A weak CPU can cause uneven frame times, delayed world streaming or low GPU utilization even when the graphics card meets the requirement. Compare the exact processor family and generation, not only the advertised core count. If the CPU is below minimum, an upgrade is a platform decision involving the motherboard and memory, not a universal fix that applies to every PC.

Insufficient RAM
When installed memory is below minimum, the operating system may page data to storage, producing hitching or failures to load. Closing browsers and overlays can reduce background use but cannot turn 8 GB into 16 GB. If the game lists 16 GB recommended and your system has 16 GB installed, keep enough free memory for Windows rather than running many other programs alongside it.
DirectX or operating-system mismatch
A newer GPU does not automatically satisfy a required DirectX feature level or an unsupported operating system. Treat these as compatibility gates. Check for a current driver and the game’s stated OS support before spending money on hardware.
Not enough disk space
Freeing space solves capacity, not speed. Keep the required capacity available on the installation drive and account for patches. If an SSD is required or recommended, moving the installation from an HDD can address loading and streaming behavior, but it does not raise the GPU or CPU capability.

Black Myth: Wukong’s Steam listing explicitly says its specifications were tested with DLSS, FSR or XeSS enabled. That means the listed GPU reference is tied to an image-reconstruction condition; native rendering at the same output resolution can be more demanding. If your hardware cannot use the named upscaling option, treat the published comparison as less direct and plan to reduce resolution or quality.
The same listing distinguishes storage by tier: an HDD is supported and an SSD recommended for minimum, while an SSD is required for recommended. This is a reminder to read the note beside the capacity. Two PCs with 130 GB free can behave differently if one uses an HDD and the other an SSD.
For any title, record the assumed output resolution and upscaler mode before comparing. A requirement tested at a lower internal resolution is not equivalent to a promise of native 4K performance. Use the game’s settings menu to confirm which upscaling technology, quality mode and resolution are active.
Turning the comparison into an upgrade decision
Upgrade only after identifying the first field that misses your chosen target. Use this order:

- Address the largest performance gap: compare your GPU and VRAM with the listed graphics card before buying memory that will not solve a rendering bottleneck.
- Check CPU balance: if frame times remain poor while the GPU is lightly loaded, the processor or platform may be limiting.
- Check RAM capacity: add memory when the installed total is below the requirement or when normal background use leaves too little available.
- Recheck the drive: use an SSD when the listing requires one, but do not expect it to substitute for missing graphics or processor performance.
There is no single upgrade that makes every PC ready for every Soulslike. The correct part depends on which requirement is below your target, what your motherboard and power supply support, and whether the game’s notes assume an upscaler or SSD.
What to check if the game technically runs but feels poor
- Confirm that the game is using the intended dedicated GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Close overlays, browsers and recording tools, then compare frame pacing with the same in-game scene.
- Lower resolution or enable the upscaler named by the game before reducing every quality option.
- Watch dedicated VRAM and system RAM usage; texture quality may need to fall when memory is exhausted.
- Move the installation to an SSD when the listing recommends or requires one for streaming and loading.
- Update the graphics driver and restart after changing driver-level settings.
- Recheck the live requirements page after a major patch, because a listing can be updated.
These checks distinguish a configuration problem from a hardware mismatch. They still cannot create a universal frame-rate guarantee: only testing the installed game with your chosen resolution and settings can show whether the result is acceptable to you.
The practical verdict
Your PC is a good candidate for a new Soulslike when its operating system, CPU, GPU and stated video memory, RAM, DirectX support, free storage and storage type meet the game’s current reference requirements, including any notes about upscaling and SSDs. Meeting minimum is a starting point, not a promise of smooth play. Use the recommended row for a stronger target, identify any below-minimum field before upgrading, and verify performance in the real game rather than treating a specification list as a benchmark.
