Then compare what you gain with the buffs or coverage you lose by replacing someone, and verify the current details in-game.
Start with the three fighters you intend to use
In standard battles, you select three fighters from a six-character party. Evaluate a newcomer against the likely three-character battle core, not just the full party roster. Check the rules for the specific mode first, since modes can differ. Bandai Namco’s battle guide puts it plainly: “Start by choosing 3 characters to use for battle!”

Before comparing units, identify what the team needs: damage, defense, support, disruption, or better survival. That gives you a practical standard for judging whether a new character adds something your current core lacks.

Check the exact Z Ability targets
Bandai Namco recommends building a party around Z Abilities. Open the character details and check both the character’s Tags and Episode and the precise Tags or Episodes targeted by its Z Ability. The Party Formation filters can help find characters with relevant Tags and Episodes. A shared theme or affiliation alone does not prove that an ability applies; its listed target and conditions do.
#1 Best Overall
- Dragon Ball Evolve delivers a high-quality figure created to look exactly like your favorite character from the popular anime series, Dragon Ball Super
- Each character in the Evolve series is approximately 5 inches tall with 27 points of articulation!
- Dragon Ball Super Evolve figures are so authentic and realistic you can recreate the epic battles and favorite moments from the anime
- Look for more characters from the Evolve series and grow your collection
- Ages 4+
Check the ability level as well. A character’s buffs may target additional Tags or add a defensive stat at a higher Z Ability level, so a fit that depends on an upgrade may not describe the character at your current level. Bandai Namco’s support FAQ recommends: “First, try building a party around Z Abilities.”
Test support in both directions
Synergy is not only about what the new character gives the team. Ask two questions:

- Do the existing core members’ Z Abilities buff the newcomer?
- Does adding the newcomer improve the buffs reaching the other fighters you expect to use?
If the newcomer receives little support or its own buffs miss the core, it may still be useful for a specific role or matchup—but it is not strengthening the team through shared Z Ability coverage. Check the actual ability descriptions rather than assuming that a broad affiliation makes the effects mutual.

Tags explain ability coverage; they do not tell the whole story of how a character contributes in battle. Read the full kit for its role and the conditions needed to use its effects. Look for damage tools, defense, healing, disruption, cover changes, revival or endurance mechanics, and support for allies. A powerful effect with a narrow or difficult activation condition may contribute less often than its description first suggests.

Example: Super Saiyan God SS Vegeta
Bandai Namco’s profile, dated October 6, 2026, lists Vegeta Clan, Saiyan, Future, God Ki, and Super Saiyan God SS as Vegeta’s Tags, and “Future” Trunks Saga (S) as his Episode. At Z Ability II, the profile says he buffs Vegeta Clan, Saiyan, and Future; at Z Ability III, it also adds base Blast Defense for Vegeta Clan. The profile describes a Unique Gauge that enhances Arts, an Ultimate Arts draw interaction, and conditions for Endurance. This illustrates why both the exact ability level and the kit matter—not merely whether a team includes a Saiyan.
Example: 1st Form Frieza: Dodoria & Zarbon (Assist)
The profile, dated September 22, 2026, lists Frieza Force, Transforming Warrior, Lineage of Evil, and Powerful Opponent, with Frieza Saga (Z) as its Episode. At Z Ability II, it buffs Lineage of Evil, Powerful Opponent, and Frieza Force; at Z Ability III, it also adds base Strike Defense for Lineage of Evil. Its described tools include standby support, ally Main Ability seal removal under a gauge condition, and defensive and disruptive effects. These details can help you judge whether its support and utility match your team’s needs.

Weigh the swap against what you give up
A new character can improve one role or matchup while weakening the rest of the lineup. Compare it with the character it would replace, considering the effects on your likely battle core and the other available selections.

- Buff coverage: Will the replacement reduce Z Ability support for the other fighters?
- Role coverage: Does the new unit fill a gap, or duplicate a job the team already handles?
- Mode and selection: Does the character fit the mode’s rules and the three fighters you expect to bring?
- Conditions: Can the team’s likely battle plan activate the effects you are counting on?
Compare options using those same criteria: Tag and Episode coverage, kit role and activation conditions, suitability for the mode, the cost to existing buffs or roles, and current evidence for the matchup. This is a practical decision framework, not a published scoring system.
Use current evidence, but verify it in-game
High-ranking PvP parties can provide a reference for how players are building teams, but popularity does not guarantee that a character will work for every account, matchup, or mode. Nor do the cited character profiles establish a complete tier list, comparative win rate, or guaranteed performance.
Character details and competitive choices can change. Check the in-game character details and the relevant mode rules before making a decision, especially when a profile carries a provisional-details warning. Judge the newcomer against your own intended core and the role you need it to perform.
