Match the platform marking first: M18 batteries go with M18 tools and chargers, M12 batteries go with M12 tools and chargers, and MX FUEL batteries go with MX FUEL equipment and chargers. Then verify the charger model, because not every Milwaukee charger supports both M18 and M12. Pack labels such as CP, XC, and HD describe M18 size, power, and runtime choices; they do not make platforms interchangeable.
Start with the platform marking
The fastest reliable compatibility check is to read the system name printed on all three parts: the tool, the battery and the charger. Milwaukee separates its cordless equipment into three platforms. Its official compatibility FAQ states that all M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers, all M12 batteries are compatible with M12 tools and chargers, and all MX FUEL batteries are compatible with MX FUEL equipment and chargers. These are separate systems unless a specific product manual says otherwise.

M18
M18 is Milwaukee’s 18-volt platform. An M18 battery is intended for an M18 tool and an M18 charger. The M18 marking is the deciding compatibility label; a CP, XC or HD suffix only describes the pack format within the M18 family.

M12 is Milwaukee’s compact 12-volt platform. M12 batteries belong on M12 tools and M12 chargers. The lower voltage platform is not interchangeable with M18 simply because both batteries carry the Milwaukee name.

MX FUEL
MX FUEL is Milwaukee’s equipment platform. MX FUEL batteries are for MX FUEL equipment and chargers. Do not treat an MX FUEL pack as a larger M18 battery or attempt to use it with an M18 or M12 tool.
Can you use an M18 battery on any Milwaukee tool?
Only when the tool is an M18 model. The official answer to the reader’s common question is that M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. The word M18 must appear on the tool and battery system markings; the Milwaukee brand alone is not enough. An M12 or MX FUEL tool requires its own platform battery.
For a particular tool, read the model label and owner manual rather than relying on a photograph, a seller’s description or the battery’s physical appearance. Milwaukee’s general FAQ establishes platform compatibility, but it does not provide a universal model-by-model table for every specialized tool. The exact manual is the authority when a product has unusual requirements or when a label is damaged.
Seven-step compatibility check
- Remove the battery and inspect the tool label. Look for M18, M12 or MX FUEL on the tool housing, nameplate or manual. Record the complete tool model number if it is visible.
- Read the battery label. Confirm that the pack carries the same platform marking as the tool. An M18 tool needs an M18 pack; an M12 tool needs an M12 pack; MX FUEL equipment needs an MX FUEL pack.
- Check the charger marking separately. Find the charger model number and the platform symbols printed on its face or label. A Milwaukee charger is not automatically a dual-platform charger.
- Look up the exact manual. Use the model numbers for the tool, battery and charger. Confirm any special instructions, approved pack families or operating limits listed for that product.
- Check that the pack is genuine and in usable condition. The platform FAQ cannot verify an individual battery’s authenticity, internal health or damage. If the label is missing, altered or unreadable, do not infer compatibility from the connector shape.
- Seat the battery without forcing it. A compatible pack should engage the tool or charger as designed. Stop if it does not latch, if the terminals do not align or if the charger indicates a fault.
- Confirm the result with the charger indicator. Follow the charger’s normal status lights and manual. If the tool and pack are a platform match but charging does not begin, troubleshoot the charger, pack condition and environment rather than switching platforms.
Which chargers support M18 and M12?
Milwaukee says authentic M18 packs must be charged on Milwaukee M18 chargers. Some chargers are explicitly designed for both platforms, while ordinary single-system chargers are not. Check the model number before plugging in a pack.

The multi-voltage charger’s 30-minute and 60-minute figures belong to that named product page and its stated compact- versus extended-capacity categories. They are not a promise that every M18 or M12 charger will charge every pack in those times. Sequential charging also means that a dual-platform charger does not charge both packs simultaneously.
How CP, XC and HD change an M18 choice
Once you have established that the battery and tool are both M18, the next decision is pack format. Milwaukee describes CP as its most compact option, XC as a balance of size and weight, power and runtime, and HD as a larger format intended for high power and longer runtime in demanding applications.

CP, XC and HD are not separate voltage systems. They are M18 pack-format distinctions. A CP label cannot make an M12 tool compatible, and an HD label cannot make an M18 charger that lacks the required platform marking suitable for another system. Establish M18 compatibility first, then weigh compactness, power and use duration.
Charging speed: the figures that are actually documented
Charging time depends on the battery, the charger and surrounding conditions. Milwaukee’s M18 Super Charger page reports the following results from testing at room temperature. These are manufacturer measurements, and actual results can vary.

Do not use one of these times as a universal estimate for an unnamed pack or charger. A different charger, a different battery temperature or a different pack capacity can change the result. If a product page gives a speed claim, keep the named charger and battery with the number when comparing options.
How to verify a specific tool, pack and charger
When all three labels are clear
If the tool and battery both say M18 and the charger is labeled for M18, the platform match follows Milwaukee’s stated compatibility rule. The same logic applies to an M12 pair or an MX FUEL pair. Confirm the model manual for any tool-specific instruction before regular use.
When the charger is dual-system
For the 48-59-1812 Multi-Voltage Charger or the 48-59-1810 Vehicle Charger, check that the pack is either M18 or M12 and place it in the correctly marked bay or position. These products are expressly designed for both systems. The 48-59-1812 charges sequentially, so plan for one pack to finish before the next begins.

Do not identify a battery solely by color, shape, capacity number or the tool it came with. Find the platform marking and complete model number. If neither can be confirmed, use the charger and tool manuals or contact Milwaukee support instead of testing the pack in an unverified tool.

When a seller claims universal compatibility
Compare the claim with the charger’s printed platform markings and Milwaukee’s manual. A listing that says universal or fits Milwaukee tools does not override the M18, M12 and MX FUEL separation. Ask for a clear image of the label and model number before buying.

The pack will not slide into the tool
- Recheck the platform marking on both items.
- Inspect the rails and terminals for dirt, damage or an obstruction, without forcing the pack.
- Compare the complete model numbers with the tool manual.
- If the platform is correct but the fit remains wrong, stop using the combination and seek model-specific support.
The charger does not start
- Confirm that the charger explicitly supports the battery platform.
- Check that the charger is receiving the correct type of power for its design. The 48-59-1810 vehicle charger is intended for a 12V or 24V DC vehicle outlet.
- Reseat the battery and observe the charger’s status indication.
- Try the procedure described in the charger manual with a known-compatible pack, if available. Do not use an unverified pack merely as a test.
- Consider temperature and pack condition. Milwaukee notes that charging performance depends on the battery, charger and surrounding environment.
The battery charges but runtime seems short
Runtime is not a compatibility test by itself. An M18 pack can be correctly matched yet deliver less use time because pack capacity, tool load, age and operating conditions differ. Compare CP, XC and HD using Milwaukee’s stated compactness, power and runtime trade-offs, and check the pack’s condition in its manual.
A charger appears to support only one system
Do not infer dual-platform capability from the Milwaukee logo or from the fact that the charger resembles another model. Read the model number. The 48-59-1812 and 48-59-1810 are named examples that explicitly support M18 and M12; a charger without that designation should be treated as single-platform until its documentation says otherwise.

Practical examples
Example: M18 drill and M18 XC pack
An M18 drill paired with an M18 XC battery is a platform match. The XC format gives the balance Milwaukee describes between size and weight, power and runtime. Charge it on a Milwaukee M18 charger or on a named dual-system charger such as the 48-59-1812 or 48-59-1810.

Example: M18 tool and M12 battery
This is not a compatible platform combination. The fact that both items are Milwaukee products does not change the M18/M12 separation. Use an M18 battery for the M18 tool.
Example: M12 light and the 48-59-1812 charger
The charger is explicitly multi-voltage, so it accepts M12 as well as M18 packs. Verify that the battery itself is M12 and follow the charger’s bay markings. Charging is sequential when more than one pack is connected.
Example: MX FUEL equipment and M18 HD pack
The platforms are different. An M18 HD pack is still an M18 battery, while MX FUEL equipment requires an MX FUEL battery. Use the MX FUEL charger and equipment documentation.

- Tool platform marking matches battery platform marking.
- Charger model explicitly lists that platform.
- Complete model numbers are recorded for all three components.
- Specialized-tool manual has been checked for additional requirements.
- Battery label and condition are clear enough to establish authenticity and identity.
- Any charging-time claim is tied to a named charger, named pack and stated test conditions.
- No component is being forced into a tool or charger.
Milwaukee’s official US compatibility pages, accessed October 13, 2026, establish the platform rules but do not certify the condition or authenticity of an individual battery. When labels conflict, a product listing makes a broader claim than the manual, or a charger reports a fault, use the exact model documentation and Milwaukee support rather than guessing.
