What “authentic” can—and cannot—mean for an online listing
A listing can be credible without being proven genuine, and a suspicious detail can justify refusing the sale without proving that the bag is counterfeit. Treat every check below as evidence for a buying decision, not as a mechanical pass/fail authentication system.

Michael Kors’ US Warranty & Repair Policy, last updated January 7, 2025, gives this risk-reduction advice: To avoid the risk of purchasing counterfeit products, it is best to buy directly from the only official Michael Kors e-commerce website (www.michaelkors.com), a Michael Kors retail store, or a department store, specialty retailer or e-tailer that you know to be reputable.
That is guidance about where to buy, not a guarantee covering every item sold by a third party.
1. Start with the seller and the route of sale
Before studying a logo or zipper, decide whether the person or business offering the bag is identifiable and accountable. A listing from an established retailer with a published returns department is a different risk from a newly created account that insists on private payment.
Questions to answer before you message the seller
- Is the seller’s name or business identity clear, with contact information that works?
- Does the account have a meaningful history of recent ratings and comments, including feedback on items similar to the bag?
- Are the seller’s answers specific and consistent, or do they evade basic questions about ownership, condition, or provenance?
- Does the marketplace identify who is responsible for fulfillment, returns, and dispute decisions?
- Are the return window, claim deadline, restocking terms, and shipping charges visible before checkout?
Read recent feedback rather than relying only on an overall star score. Look for comments about inaccurate descriptions, substituted items, delayed refunds, or pressure to move a transaction away from the platform. A long account history does not authenticate a bag, but it gives you more information about how the seller handles problems.
Why off-platform payment is a decisive warning
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises keeping payment within the marketplace or using a secure payment method with meaningful buyer protections. A seller who asks you to pay by an unprotected transfer, cash-equivalent service, gift card, cryptocurrency, or a private invoice may remove the site’s claim process and make recovery difficult. Do not let a discount or a deadline pressure you into bypassing the checkout system.

2. Demand photos of the actual bag
Stock images show what a style is supposed to look like; they do not show that the seller possesses the item or reveal its current condition. FTC marketplace guidance recommends looking closely at listing images and notes that stock photos alone cannot establish the item’s condition or possession.
A practical photo request
Ask for several new, well-lit images of the exact bag. You can request a handwritten note with the seller’s username and the current date in one image if you need confidence that the photos were made for your conversation. This is a fraud-prevention step, not a Michael Kors authentication rubric.
- Front, back, both sides, base, and top opening.
- Close views of the exterior logo or other markings, interior branding, seams, edge paint, corners, and handles.
- Hardware, zipper pulls, feet, straps, and any wear, scratches, tarnish, or repairs.
- Interior pockets, lining, labels, tags, and any serial or style information present on that particular bag.
- Every included accessory that the listing promises, photographed with the bag.
Refusal to provide reasonable additional photographs is a reason to pause. It is not conclusive proof of a fake, because a seller might have legitimate privacy, storage, or time constraints, but you should not pay for an item you cannot inspect adequately.

When an official image or description for the exact style is available, compare the listing’s stated model, color, size, pocket arrangement, strap attachments, hardware finish, and closure. Check whether the seller’s written details agree with the photographs. A mismatch can indicate an inaccurate listing, a substituted bag, or a counterfeit; it can also reflect a modified or older production run. Ask for an explanation rather than treating one difference as a verdict.

Do not assume that all Michael Kors bags use identical labels, interior layouts, fonts, hardware, or codes. Production years and regional versions can vary. The useful question is whether this specific combination of details is plausible for the claimed style and whether the seller can answer consistently.
3. Treat price and anomalies as prompts to investigate
The FTC warns that an expensive brand-name item offered at a very low price might be fake. Price is therefore a risk signal, not an authentication result. Compare several genuinely comparable listings—same style, size, material, condition, and included accessories—before deciding whether a discount is unusual.

4. Check the seller’s recourse terms before checkout
Buyer protection is part of the purchase decision. Open the marketplace’s policy for the exact transaction and verify what happens if the item is counterfeit, materially different from the description, damaged in transit, or never delivered.

Confirm these terms in writing
- How many days you have to report a problem after delivery.
- Whether the claim must be opened through a particular button, form, or message thread.
- Which evidence is required, such as photographs, an unboxing record, or a return tracking number.
- Who pays return shipping and whether an international return has customs or brokerage costs.
- Whether the seller, marketplace, payment provider, or a combination decides the dispute.
- Whether the protection excludes particular sellers, payment methods, used goods, or transactions completed outside the platform.
Save a copy or screenshot of the listing, policy pages, seller profile, and promised accessories before payment. Policies can change, and a listing can be edited after you order.
5. Pay on protected rails and preserve evidence
Use the marketplace checkout when it offers a meaningful dispute process. If you pay directly, a credit card or another secure payment system with buyer protection is generally safer than an irreversible transfer, subject to that provider’s terms. Never send payment outside the marketplace simply because the seller offers a lower price there.
Records to retain
- The complete listing, including the original photographs, title, description, price, and seller name.
- Every message in which the seller describes authenticity, condition, model, accessories, or returns.
- Order confirmation, payment receipt, shipping record, tracking number, and delivery date.
- Photos or video of the package, labels, and bag as received, especially if the item is materially different.

7. A step-by-step decision workflow
- Identify the sales route. Prefer the official Michael Kors site, a Michael Kors store, or a retailer you can independently identify and contact. If the route is a marketplace, record the seller and the platform’s protection policy.

8. If the seller refuses evidence or the bag arrives misrepresented
Before purchase
If the seller refuses reasonable photos, avoids direct questions, changes the story, or cannot explain returns, pause the transaction. You do not need to prove counterfeiting before choosing another listing; insufficient evidence and inadequate recourse are enough reasons not to buy.
After delivery
- Stop using the bag and preserve its packaging and accessories.
- Photograph the bag and every discrepancy against the saved listing.
- Contact the seller through the marketplace and state the remedy you seek.
- Open the marketplace claim promptly, following its stated procedure and deadline.
- Contact your card issuer or payment provider if the marketplace process does not resolve a covered problem, while following that provider’s rules.
- Keep all records until the dispute and any refund are complete.
Michael Kors’ US policy lists [email protected] for counterfeit reports. A report can alert the brand to suspected activity, but it is not a promise that the company will authenticate a third-party purchase or provide a refund.
9. Warranty and proof-of-purchase limits
The US Michael Kors policy describes a one-year limited warranty for handbags, small leather goods, and tech accessories, subject to conditions and exclusions, and requiring proof of purchase. That warranty is US-specific in the cited policy and should not be assumed to transfer automatically to a later buyer or validate a used marketplace item.
A receipt, box, dust bag, authenticity card, or other packaging may support the seller’s story, but the official guidance reviewed does not say that any of those items authenticates a bag. They can be copied, separated from the original item, or paired with a different bag. Consider them context, not decisive proof.
10. What the available guidance does not establish

Those limits are why a listing review should be described honestly as risk assessment. - The seller is identifiable, has checkable history, and answers consistently.
