Check the product name printed on the sealed wrapper or its retail packaging: Wizards labels these products “Play Booster” and “Collector Booster.” That label is the clearest way to tell them apart. If it is missing or hard to read, check the exact set’s official product information; card counts and foil contents can vary by release.
Check the printed product name first
Look for “Play Booster” or “Collector Booster” on the wrapper or packaging around the pack. Wizards lists them as separate products in its MTG Product Guide. The set name is useful too: it lets you match the pack against release-specific information.

The names also signal different intended experiences. Wizards describes Play Boosters as suitable for drafting or opening for fun, while Collector Boosters are aimed at collectors seeking premium cards and treatments. Neither product name guarantees a valuable card.

Use the set name printed on the pack to find its official product article or entry in the MTG Set Archive. Compare the product headings and contents listed there with the item you have. For example, Wizards’ Foundations product article has separate Play Booster and Collector Booster sections.
#1 Best Overall
- The Foundations Play Booster Pack includes 15 cards.
Contents can help confirm what a labeled pack is, but they are not a universal identification test. Wizards’ explanation of What Are Play Boosters? describes a general structure in the context of Murders at Karlov Manor and says details may change by set. Check the relevant set’s own documentation rather than applying one release’s card count, foil rate, or rarity odds to every pack.
For one release-specific example, Wizards lists 14 Magic cards in each Foundations Play Booster and 15 in each Foundations Collector Booster. Those figures apply to Foundations, not to all Magic releases.
Rank #2
- Each Secrets of Strixhaven Play Booster Pack Contains 14 Magic: The Gathering cards.
What the name tells you—and what it does not
- Play Booster: the product intended for draft play or opening for fun, according to Wizards’ product guide.
- Collector Booster: the collector-oriented product featuring premium cards and treatments, as described by Wizards.
- Neither label: proof that a pack contains a particular card, has a guaranteed monetary value, or is authentic. The official product information describes product types and contents; it is not a comprehensive wrapper catalog or counterfeit-detection guide.
If the name is obscured, absent, or seems suspicious, compare the exact set’s official product materials or ask a reputable game store. Do not try to authenticate an individual pack from a photo or foil and card counts alone.
Be aware of the planned 2027 name change
In an announcement dated October 5, 2026, Wizards said Play Boosters will be called “Booster Packs” starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027. The announcement describes a future change, not a rename of existing Play Booster stock. Older packaging may still say “Play Booster”; for later releases, use the full product name and set-specific information. Wizards also announced that 1 in every 300 Collector Boosters will contain the described God Pack beginning with the 2027 changes; that announced feature is not a way to identify ordinary packs. See Updating Our Boosters in 2027.
