Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe most reliable first check is to correlate four kinds of records: SSH authentication events, the system journal, login/session history, and audit records if auditing was already enabled. Look for a successful remote login that matches an unexpected account, time, or source address, then verify whether related session or system events follow it. A failed password attempt or one unfamiliar address is not, by itself, proof that someone accessed the computer.
Linux logging differs by distribution and configuration. Records may be rotated, incomplete, volatile, or absent because collection was never enabled. Treat this as a careful first-pass investigation, not a definitive forensic test.

What can show remote access?
Each record source answers a different question. Use more than one source before deciding that access was unauthorized.
Recommended Free Tools
| Source | What it can show | Useful detail | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSH authorization log | Attempts and results handled by the SSH service | Account, time, authentication method, source address, and messages such as accepted or failed authentication | Path and retention vary; logging may be disabled or rotated |
| systemd journal | Service and system events, including SSH messages when the service logs there | Boot, service, and timestamp context | Older boots require persistent journal storage; volatile journals disappear at reboot |
| login/session history | Recorded logins and logouts | Account, terminal or source information, and session times | Files can be truncated, rotated, or incomplete |
| auditd | Events covered by rules that were active when the event occurred | For USER_LOGIN events, status and an address can be available | It cannot reconstruct activity that was not being audited |
Ubuntu documentation identifies /var/log/auth.log as an authorization-log location that includes remote logins. Other distributions may use a different file or send the same events to journald. Red Hat guidance demonstrates querying auditd USER_LOGIN events, while Debian examples show rules that can monitor SSH files, login and session files, account files, and command execution. These references describe capabilities, not a guarantee that every Linux installation collected them.

Before you inspect anything
- Write down the suspected time window, expected users, normal administrator addresses, and whether a VPN or jump host is normally used.
- Do not delete, truncate, rotate, or edit logs while investigating. Avoid rebooting a machine when preserving evidence matters; a reboot can remove volatile journal data and change the timeline.
- Run read-only commands with an account that is already authorized to administer the system. Record the command, time, and output location in your case notes.
- Use a trusted terminal or management channel if you suspect the current session is compromised. Do not paste secrets, private keys, or complete log files into public services.
1. Identify the distribution and logging system
First establish which distribution and logging stack you are examining. The following command displays the operating-system identification without changing the system:
cat /etc/os-release
On a system using systemd, the journal is queried with journalctl. Check whether the journal has records for earlier boots:
sudo journalctl --list-boots
If only the current boot appears, older entries may never have been retained. Persistent journal storage is normally configured separately from the journal query command; a missing older boot is therefore a retention or configuration issue, not evidence that no remote login occurred.
Also check whether the traditional authorization log exists:
sudo ls -l /var/log/auth.log /var/log/secure
Some systems use /var/log/auth.log, some use /var/log/secure, and others rely mainly on journald. A missing path is not an error by itself. Check the service’s journal and the distribution’s logging configuration instead.
2. Review SSH authentication events
SSH is the most common remote administration service on a Linux computer. Start with the authorization log if your distribution provides one.
Ubuntu-style authorization log
sudo grep -E 'sshd|ssh' /var/log/auth.log
Limit the output to the suspected period with an additional time filter, or inspect rotated files when the event is older:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo zgrep -h -E 'sshd|ssh' /var/log/auth.log*
Typical messages distinguish an accepted authentication from a failed one. Read the complete line rather than relying on a count. Record the timestamp, account, authentication method, source address, source port when present, and the result. A line reporting an accepted key or password indicates that the SSH service accepted credentials; a failed-password line records an unsuccessful attempt.
Journal-based SSH search
Service names differ. Try the unit used by the host:
sudo journalctl -u ssh --since '2 days ago'
sudo journalctl -u sshd --since '2 days ago'
To search all retained journal messages for SSH-related text, use:

Use a precise start and end time when the window is known. The journal’s timestamps are the basis for comparison with other records, so note the host’s timezone and clock condition.

An unfamiliar successful event deserves investigation. An unfamiliar failed attempt proves only that an unsuccessful attempt was recorded. An address identifies a network endpoint, not a person; shared networks, VPNs, proxies, cloud hosts, and address reassignment can all make attribution uncertain.
3. Check auditd records when they were already enabled
Auditd can provide richer event data, but only for events covered by rules that were loaded before the activity. Check whether the service and records exist:
sudo systemctl status auditd
sudo ls -l /var/log/audit/
Red Hat documentation demonstrates searching USER_LOGIN events with ausearch. A practical first query for the current day is:
sudo ausearch -m USER_LOGIN -ts today -i
Filter by successful and unsuccessful results separately:
sudo ausearch -m USER_LOGIN -ts today -sv yes -i
sudo ausearch -m USER_LOGIN -ts today -sv no -i
The exact options available can vary with the audit package version; consult man ausearch if a filter is rejected. In a decoded USER_LOGIN event, fields such as addr and res may show the source address and result. Compare those fields with the SSH log rather than treating an audit event in isolation.
Understand what audit rules did and did not capture
Debian’s example rules illustrate several useful categories: SSH authentication logs and daemon configuration, login and session files, account files, and command execution. Those examples are configuration guidance, not proof that an arbitrary host used the same rules. If auditd was enabled after the suspected access, new rules improve future collection but cannot recreate the past.
Do not infer that the absence of a USER_LOGIN event means no login occurred. The service might not have been audited, the rule may have excluded the event, or the audit log may have been rotated or removed.
How to weigh the different records
Think of the sources as layers rather than interchangeable copies. An SSH authorization line is closest to the authentication decision: it can show whether the daemon accepted or rejected credentials. A wtmp-derived session record can show that a login session was registered, but it may not contain the same authentication detail. Journal entries add service and boot context, which helps explain why one source has a gap. Auditd can add a result and network address when the relevant rule was active.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCollection and retention are as important as the apparent detail. A highly detailed audit record is useful only if auditd was running, the matching rule was loaded, and the record still exists. A persistent journal can preserve earlier boots; a volatile journal cannot. Rotated authorization logs may still be available in compressed files, while an expired or truncated file leaves an evidence gap. Note these conditions beside each event in your timeline so a missing field is not mistaken for a negative finding.

When sources disagree, do not choose the version that best fits a theory. First check whether they describe different stages of the same connection, use different timezones, or were affected by a reboot, crash, rotation, or clock change. The goal of correlation is to establish a consistent sequence, not to force every source to contain identical text.
4. Corroborate with login and session history
Ubuntu describes /var/log/wtmp as a source of login records used by tools such as who. Query the records with:
last
For a current-session view, use:
who
These commands provide a separate record stream from the SSH daemon log. Compare account names and times with accepted SSH events. A session record that starts near an accepted SSH event strengthens the correlation; a mismatch calls for checking timezones, service behavior, and record retention rather than an immediate conclusion.
Reboot and shutdown events can explain gaps or changes in the timeline. Red Hat documents last -x for this purpose:
last -x
Use the reboot entries alongside journal boot identifiers and SSH timestamps. A crash or forced restart can leave a partial record. Red Hat notes that wtmp may be truncated before a crash, so it is not a guarantee of every login.
5. Build a single timeline
Create one line for every relevant event. Do not summarize several records into one unexplained conclusion.
| Time | Account | Source | Result | Record source | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host timestamp | Requested or authenticated user | Address, if present | Accepted, failed, or other result | auth log, journal, wtmp, or auditd | Matching session, reboot, or later activity |
Sort entries by the host’s actual timezone and note any clock correction. Then ask:
- Was the account authorized to connect at that time?
- Does the source address match an expected office network, VPN, administrator, or automation system?
- Do SSH, auditd, session history, and journal records agree?
- Did a reboot, shutdown, crash, rotation, or retention boundary interrupt the sequence?
- Is there subsequent activity under the same account that needs review?
Correlation is stronger when independent records agree on the account and time. A single clue can have an innocent explanation, while an accepted login followed by related activity under the same account is more concerning than a failed attempt alone. This is an assessment of consistency, not a mathematical proof of who connected.
How to interpret common findings
Only failed passwords appear
The records establish unsuccessful attempts. They do not establish that an attacker authenticated or accessed files. Preserve the timestamps and source addresses, then check whether any successful event exists in the same period or under another account.
An accepted login comes from an unfamiliar address
Verify whether the address belongs to a VPN, bastion host, mobile connection, cloud administration system, or another shared network. Check the account and authentication method. An address alone cannot identify a person or prove malicious intent, but an unrecognized successful login should be treated as a priority for verification.

The SSH log is missing
Use journald and check the alternate authorization-log path used by the distribution. Then determine whether logs were rotated, forwarded elsewhere, or never enabled. Do not conclude that no remote access occurred merely because one file is absent.
Session history conflicts with the SSH log
Check timezone and clock settings, the exact event times, reboot records, and whether wtmp was truncated or rotated. Different sources record different stages of a connection, so a small timing difference is not automatically evidence of tampering.
No older journal boots are available
The journal may be volatile. Without persistent storage, a reboot can remove older entries. Treat the missing period as an evidence gap and consult any centralized log collector or backup that was configured before the event.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an empty log can and cannot tell you
Logs are evidence of what the host recorded, not a complete memory of everything that happened. An empty result can mean that:
- the relevant service was not running or used a different logging facility;
- authorization, audit, or journal collection was not enabled;
- records were rotated, expired, truncated, or stored on another host;
- the journal was volatile and the computer rebooted;
- the event occurred outside the retained time window; or
- records were altered or removed after the fact.
Because of these possibilities, the correct statement is usually that no matching event was found in the records still available, not that remote access did not happen.

Questions to answer before calling access unauthorized
Use the same decision points for every suspicious event. Was the account expected to exist and authorized for SSH? Was a maintenance window, automated job, VPN connection, or administrator session active? Does the address belong to an expected network endpoint, and is the authentication method consistent with that account’s normal use? Did an accepted event appear in more than one record source? Are the timestamps comparable, or is there a timezone or clock discrepancy?
Also record what the logs cannot answer. An address does not identify the individual at a keyboard. A successful authentication shows that the service accepted credentials, but these records alone do not establish what files were viewed or changed afterward. Session and audit records may provide follow-on clues, yet they remain dependent on prior configuration and retention. Keeping those limits explicit prevents an investigation from overstating either suspicion or reassurance.
If the evidence points to an unauthorized successful login
Stop treating the machine as an ordinary troubleshooting exercise. Preserve the relevant logs and timeline, avoid deleting accounts or files, and do not run improvised cleanup commands that could overwrite evidence. If the system contains sensitive data or the incident has legal, employment, financial, or safety consequences, contact a qualified incident-response professional and follow your organization’s response plan. A first-pass log review does not establish a complete containment or forensic procedure.
If you administer the machine under a documented response plan, use that plan to decide how to restrict access and rotate credentials. Make those changes from a trusted system and record exactly what was changed and when. Changing credentials or configuration can be necessary for safety, but it also changes the evidence trail, so coordinate with the responder responsible for the investigation.

After the immediate question is resolved, improve collection deliberately:
Best Value
- Configure the system’s approved logging method so SSH authorization events are retained for the period your organization requires.
- Use persistent journald storage when previous-boot and service history are important, and verify that retention is sufficient.
- Enable auditd rules appropriate to the host, covering SSH configuration and authentication, login/session files, account changes, and command execution where justified.
- Forward important logs to a separate, access-controlled system so an intruder cannot erase the only copy.
- Document expected administrators, VPN ranges, automation accounts, and maintenance windows; without that context, an address is difficult to interpret.
- Test the logging configuration with an authorized login and confirm that the expected records appear in the chosen log sources.
Record retention and audit rules must match your distribution, privacy obligations, storage capacity, and operational needs. Enabling collection now improves future visibility; it does not make past gaps disappear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a failed SSH login mean someone accessed my Linux computer?
No. It shows that the system recorded an unsuccessful authentication attempt. Check the same time window for an accepted event, a matching session record, or other corroborating activity before concluding that access occurred.
Is an unfamiliar IP address proof of a compromise?
No. The address identifies a network endpoint, not a person. VPNs, bastion hosts, shared networks, cloud systems, mobile connections, and reassigned addresses can all look unfamiliar. An accepted login from an unrecognized address still deserves prompt verification.
Where should I look for SSH login history?
Ubuntu commonly records authorization events in /var/log/auth.log. Some systems use /var/log/secure, while others send SSH messages to journald. Search the path and journal used by the distribution, including rotated records when the event is older.
What if /var/log/auth.log does not exist?
Its absence does not show that no remote access happened. The system may use another authorization-log path, journald, a centralized collector, or no local collection. Check the SSH service journal and the host’s logging configuration.
What do last and who add to an SSH investigation?
They read login and session records derived from wtmp, providing a separate view of recorded sessions. Compare their account and time information with accepted SSH events, while allowing for rotation, truncation, crashes, and differences in what each source records.
Can auditd tell me whether an earlier login happened if I enable it now?
No. Auditd records only events covered by rules that were active when the events occurred. Enabling rules now improves future collection but cannot reconstruct a past period that was not audited.
Recommended Free Tools
Why are older journal entries missing?
The journal may be volatile, so a reboot removed earlier entries, or retention may have expired them. Persistent journal storage must have been configured before the event for previous boots to remain available. Treat the missing period as an evidence gap.
What should I do after finding an unauthorized successful login?
Preserve the relevant records and timeline, avoid improvised cleanup that could alter evidence, and follow your organization’s response plan. For sensitive or consequential systems, involve qualified incident-response assistance before making changes such as deleting accounts or rotating credentials.
The Bottom Line
Start with SSH authentication records, then corroborate them with journald, wtmp/session history, reboot records, and auditd events that were already being collected. A successful login that aligns across sources and is inconsistent with the account’s expected use is significant; a failed attempt, unfamiliar address, or empty log alone is not proof. Record the evidence gaps and seek qualified incident-response help when the stakes are high.
