How to Tell Whether a Job Interview Is Run by AI or a Human

You usually cannot prove who—or what—is conducting a job interview from conversational style alone. A one-way recording, preset questions, chatbot disclosure, consent language, or notice that your answers will be transcribed, scored, or analyzed are practical signs that artificial intelligence may be involved. The dependable test is to ask the employer, in writing, whether the process is human-led, AI-led, or hybrid; what data are analyzed; who reviews the result; how long recordings are kept; and whether a human alternative or accommodation is available.

What “an AI interview” can mean

Employers use the term AI for several different arrangements. A system might simply transcribe a live conversation, extract features from a recording, assign a score, rank applicants, recommend who advances, or conduct the entire question-and-answer exchange. A recruiter may still make the final decision even when software performs one or more earlier steps.

The U.S. Department of Justice explains that artificial intelligence generally means a computer completing a task usually done by a person, such as recognizing facial expressions during a video interview. That definition covers tools that work in the background as well as an obvious talking chatbot. “AI-assisted” therefore does not mean “a human watched everything without software,” and a friendly human voice does not prove that no automated analysis is running.

AI-led

An AI-led process has software asking questions or directing the session. You may type to a chatbot, speak with a synthetic voice, or follow an automated flow that changes based on your responses. There may be no recruiter present in real time. The system can still route your answers to people later.

AI-assisted

In an AI-assisted interview, a person may ask questions live or review a recording, while software transcribes speech, detects or extracts features, summarizes answers, scores competencies, or recommends a disposition. This is the most easily missed arrangement because the interaction can feel entirely human.

Human-led

A named recruiter or hiring manager asks and evaluates questions directly. Even then, the employer may use recording, transcription, scheduling, note-taking, or assessment software. Ask specifically about those background functions rather than treating “live with a person” as a complete answer.

Signs that software may be involved

One-way, asynchronous recording

If you receive questions in advance and record answers without speaking to another person, you are taking an asynchronous (one-way) video interview. The United Kingdom’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology defines these as interviews in which applicants submit a video answering predetermined questions and the answers are subsequently analyzed by automated technology, human oversight, or both. A request to upload a voice clip instead of talking directly with a person is also a telltale sign of possible automation, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

A one-way format is strong evidence that software may analyze the material, not proof that it does. Some employers have people watch every recording; others combine human review with automated scoring. Obtain the employer’s answer before you consent.

Chatbot or virtual-assistant language

Words such as “chatbot,” “virtual assistant,” “automated interview,” or “conversational assessment” identify an automated front end. Canada’s Public Service Commission states: “You must tell candidates when they are interacting with a chatbot or a virtual assistant.” Look for this disclosure in the invitation, application portal, pop-up notice, or help text.

Automated-decision and scoring notices

Read for “automated decision system,” “AI screening,” “automated scoring,” “ranking,” “recommendation,” or “machine-learning assessment.” A notice that your responses will be scored or compared by a system is more informative than a generic statement that the employer uses technology.

Consent and privacy wording

Consent screens can reveal the data stream. Look for permission to record, transcribe, analyze, store, or share your voice, image, facial features, eye movements, tone, wording, or behavioral signals. Terms such as “feature extraction,” “biometric information,” “sentiment,” “facial expression,” and “gaze” warrant a direct question about what is actually measured and why.

Preset prompts and rigid timing

A sequence of identical prompts, countdown timers, a fixed number of retakes, or a portal that automatically advances after each answer is consistent with an automated workflow. These clues establish the format, not the evaluator: a human may later watch the same clips or review a machine-generated report.

Automated status messages

Messages that arrive immediately after submission, use a generic sender, or describe your “score,” “fit,” or “next stage” without naming a reviewer may indicate software-generated processing. They are clues only; recruiting platforms also send routine notices on behalf of people.

What is not proof

Fast replies, awkward pauses, repetitive prompts, an overly polished voice, or a lack of small talk can result from a script, accessibility settings, poor connectivity, or a busy recruiter. Conversely, natural warmth and follow-up questions do not establish that a person alone made the assessment. Mixed workflows allow a human-sounding exchange and automated scoring to coexist.

Where to look before you start

  1. Invitation and scheduling page. Search the email and booking screen for “asynchronous video,” “automated interview,” “chatbot,” “virtual assistant,” “AI,” and “recording.” Note the exact wording and date.
  2. Job posting and application portal. Check the employer’s privacy, candidate-notice, and technology pages. Ontario guidance says covered publicly advertised job postings must disclose whether AI is used to screen, assess, or select applicants beginning 1 January 2026. That obligation is jurisdiction- and posting-specific; absence of a notice elsewhere is not proof that no tool is used.
  3. Consent screen. Read every expandable section before selecting “agree.” Identify the categories of data collected, purposes, recipients, retention period, cross-border transfers, and any withdrawal process.
  4. Instructions and help center. Determine whether answers are live or recorded, whether retakes are allowed, whether a person can answer technical questions, and whether captions or other accessibility features are available.
  5. Confirmation records. Save screenshots or PDFs of the posting, consent text, and invitation. Keep them with your correspondence in case the terms change or you need to ask an authority for advice.

Ask these questions directly

Ask before recording or consenting, preferably by email so the response is preserved. You can copy this concise script:

“Is this interview conducted by a person, an AI agent, or a combination? Are my words, voice, face, facial expressions, eye movements, tone, or other signals scored or analyzed? Who reviews the raw recording and any score, and can a human reconsider the result? How long will the recording and derived data be retained, who receives them, and is a human interview or another assessment available?”

Request a separate answer for each stage. An employer may use a chatbot for scheduling, a recorded assessment for screening, and a human panel for the final interview. “We use AI” is too broad to tell you which stage affects your candidacy.

How to interpret common answers

Employer’s answer What it establishes Follow-up
“A recruiter will be on the call.” There is a live person, but software may transcribe or score the call. Ask whether any recording, transcription, facial, voice, tone, or eye-movement analysis occurs and who sees it.
“It is an automated interview.” Software directs at least part of the interaction. Ask whether a human reviews raw answers, what score is produced, and whether it can be overridden.
“AI assists our recruiters.” Software performs one or more analysis, ranking, or recommendation tasks. Ask which signals are used, at what stage, and whether a person reviews every candidate or only flagged results.
“We do not make automated decisions.” The employer says a person makes the final decision. Ask whether automation still screens, ranks, summarizes, or recommends candidates before that decision.
“We cannot discuss the vendor or model.” You have not received enough information to understand the processing. Ask for the categories of data, purpose, retention, reviewers, appeal route, and a human alternative in writing.

Compare the three interview arrangements

Question AI-led AI-assisted Human-led
Who asks questions? Software, such as a chatbot or automated voice. A system, a person, or both, depending on the stage. A named recruiter, manager, or panel.
Are answers live? Often interactive, but not necessarily attended by a person. Live conversation or recorded answers. Usually live; recording may still be enabled.
What may be analyzed? Words, voice, timing, and potentially video signals listed in the notice. Transcripts, extracted features, scores, rankings, or recommendations. Human judgment, with possible transcription or note-taking software.
Who reviews the result? Software may produce an initial result; a recruiter may review later. People and software share the workflow. A person, unless undisclosed tools are used.
Notice and consent Look for chatbot, automated-system, recording, and analysis disclosures. Ask which assistance functions are active and whether consent covers them. Confirm recording and any third-party processing.
Retention and sharing Ask how long recordings and derived data remain and who receives them. Ask whether vendors receive transcripts, features, or scores. Ask whether the employer records, transcribes, or shares the call.
Accommodation or appeal Request a human or accessible alternative before submitting. Ask who can reconsider a score and how to challenge an error. Ask for an alternative format if the live process creates a barrier.
Governing rules Requirements vary by country, state or province, sector, and employer type; obtain the employer’s location and the job’s location before relying on a disclosure rule.

Protect yourself when AI may assess your voice or face

Describe the barrier, not a diagnosis

If a facial, voice, tone, or eye-detection system creates a disability-related barrier, explain the functional limitation and request an alternative. You do not have to prove that the software is biased before asking for an accommodation. The U.S. Department of Justice advises employers to examine hiring technologies for disability discrimination. UK guidance also warns that facial, voice, and eye-detection systems can be less accurate or inaccessible for some protected or disabled groups.

Request a concrete alternative

Ask for a live human interview, a text response, a standard work sample, additional time, captions, or another assessment that measures the same job-related skill without the barrier. Employers may choose the reasonable method, so focus on the essential task you can demonstrate rather than insisting on one particular vendor or format.

Ask how an accommodation request is handled

Find the recruiter, accessibility contact, or human-resources channel named in the posting. Ask whether your request will be kept separate from scoring, who will see medical information, and whether a human—not an automated rejection—will decide your eligibility. Keep the request and response.

What to do if the employer will not explain

  1. Pause before submitting. If the process asks for a recording or biometric-like data and the employer will not identify the purpose or reviewers, ask for clarification rather than guessing.
  2. Send a written follow-up. List the four unanswered points: type of automation, signals analyzed, human review or reconsideration, and retention or sharing.
  3. Preserve evidence. Keep the posting, consent language, screenshots, emails, and dates. Do not alter the originals.
  4. Use the employer’s escalation path. Contact recruiting, human resources, privacy, accessibility, or the data-protection contact shown in the notice.
  5. Seek jurisdiction-specific advice. Labor, privacy, and disability-rights rules differ by country and by employer type. A regulator, ombuds office, union, or qualified adviser can tell you whether a disclosure, access, or accommodation right applies.

Do not secretly record a call to prove automation; recording-consent laws differ. Written questions and saved notices create a safer record.

A practical checklist for interview day

  • Confirm whether the session is live, one-way recorded, chatbot-led, or a mixture.
  • Ask whether words, voice, face, facial expression, eye movements, tone, timing, or wording are analyzed.
  • Ask who sees raw answers, transcripts, scores, and recommendations.
  • Ask whether a human can override or reconsider an automated result.
  • Ask the retention period, deletion process, and recipients, including vendors.
  • Request captions, extra time, a text option, a live interviewer, or another reasonable alternative if needed.
  • Save the invitation, posting, privacy notice, consent text, and every response.

Frequently misunderstood situations

“The recruiter introduced themselves, so it is human-only.”

Not necessarily. A live recruiter can use transcription, scoring, or recommendation software. Ask what runs during and after the call.

“The platform says AI-assisted, so a person watched my whole answer.”

That phrase does not specify the review level. Ask whether people review every raw answer, a sample, or only candidates selected by a score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I can retake the video, so no algorithm is involved.”

Retakes describe the user interface, not the evaluation method. The same recording can be analyzed automatically and reviewed by people.

“There was no AI notice, so the employer broke the law.”

Disclosure duties are not universal. Ontario’s cited requirement applies to covered publicly advertised postings from 1 January 2026; other jurisdictions and private or public employers may follow different rules. Obtain local advice before drawing a legal conclusion.

Bottom line: verify, document, and request a fair route

Style and intuition cannot reliably identify an AI interviewer. A recorded one-way format, chatbot disclosure, automated-scoring language, or consent to analyze voice or facial signals should prompt precise questions. The answer you need is not merely whether the employer “uses AI,” but which stage uses it, what data it examines, who reviews the result, how long the data remain, and what human or accessible alternative exists. Get that answer in writing, keep the evidence, and escalate to the appropriate labor, privacy, or disability-rights authority when the employer will not explain.
