Start with Rockstar Games’ official Grand Theft Auto VI media page. Compare the image with the screenshots, trailers, clips and artwork Rockstar has published there. If you cannot trace the picture to an official release or reliable provenance, describe it as unverified—not automatically real, fake or leaked. A polished render, GTA logo, creator watermark or thousands of reposts does not establish who made the image.
The three labels you should use
People often ask whether a circulating image is “real” as if there were only two possible answers. Provenance supports three more accurate labels:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Label | When it is justified | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Official Rockstar image | The same image appears in Rockstar Games’ official GTA VI media archive, or Rockstar clearly released it through an official channel. | Rockstar published that image. It does not prove that an attached caption, crop, date or claim is accurate. |
| Fan-made | The creator identifies it as fan work, or a reliable source establishes that it was made by a fan, editor or artist. | The image is not an official Rockstar release. |
| Unverified or purported | No exact official match exists and no dependable source establishes who created or obtained it. | Only that its origin has not been established. It is not a finding that the image is genuine or fraudulent. |
This vocabulary prevents a common mistake: treating “not in Rockstar’s archive” as proof of a fake. An image can be a genuine stolen development frame, an edited screenshot, an AI-generated clip still or an ordinary fan creation. Without provenance, those possibilities remain unresolved.

Go to Rockstar Games’ official Grand Theft Auto VI media page yourself. Do not rely on a reposted thumbnail, a screenshot of a social-media post or a search-result preview. The official page groups the game’s released screenshots, trailers, clips and artwork, and offers downloadable collections. Because the page can change, record the date on which you checked it.

When accessed on October 13, 2026, the live page displayed 99 screenshots and 23 artwork and wallpaper items. Those are a time-stamped count, not a permanent catalog total. The page also listed three major videos: Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. New material can alter both the counts and the list.
Search for an exact match
Compare the circulating file with the archive at full resolution. Check the complete frame, not only a cropped face or landscape detail. Match distinctive elements such as character position, vehicle damage, lighting, signs, buildings and the arrangement of objects. If the exact picture is present in Rockstar’s archive, you can call it an official Rockstar image.
An exact match answers a narrow question: Rockstar published that image. It does not validate everything added later by another account. A repost may have changed the aspect ratio, added a caption, inserted a watermark, altered colors or claimed that the frame depicts a feature Rockstar never announced. Treat the archive match and the surrounding post as separate claims.

A picture may originate as a frame from an official trailer or clip rather than as a still in the screenshot gallery. Scrub the official videos and compare the scene, camera angle and character movement. Artwork and wallpapers can also be mistaken for gameplay captures because they use the same characters and locations. Classify the item according to the official format in which Rockstar released it.
What an archive check can and cannot prove
- It can prove publication: an exact match in Rockstar’s own archive demonstrates that Rockstar released that image.
- It can identify an altered repost: a matching source image with different cropping, text or color treatment shows that the circulating version is not the untouched official file.
- It cannot authenticate every unlisted image: an absent image may be a leak, a fan project, an edit or a fabrication.
- It cannot verify a caption: even an official frame does not establish the date, location, mission or feature claimed by a third party.
- It is not a permanent snapshot: the media page is live and may gain or reorganize material, so note when you performed the comparison.
This is why “I cannot find it on Rockstar’s page” should normally lead to unverified, not “definitely fake.”
A step-by-step verification workflow
- Preserve the item you are checking. Save the original file or the highest-resolution version available, along with the post’s account name, publication time and caption. Keep the unaltered file separate from screenshots or crops you make for comparison.
- Open Rockstar’s official GTA VI media page. Use the page itself rather than a repost or a search preview. Review the screenshot gallery, artwork section and listed videos.
- Compare for an exact visual match. Check the entire composition and small details. A scene that merely resembles an official trailer is not an exact match.
- Inspect official videos for frame sources. If the image is not in the still gallery, look through Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. A frame captured from an official video is still official media, although a crop or edited version may not be.
- Trace where the image first appeared. Follow reposts back to the earliest identifiable upload. Note whether the first poster is the alleged creator, an anonymous account or an outlet that names a source. A large repost count measures distribution, not origin.
- Look for independent reporting about that exact item. A reputable report may establish whether a creator made it, whether a file came from a known incident or whether the claim remains unconfirmed. General discussion of GTA VI leaks does not authenticate an unrelated picture.
- Use visual irregularities as prompts, not verdicts. Examine text, interface elements, hands, reflections, object geometry and motion when a clip is available. Oddities warrant deeper checking; they are not a forensic test by themselves.
- Assign the narrowest defensible label. Use “official Rockstar image” for an archive match, “fan-made” when authorship is established, and “unverified” or “purported” in every other case. Record what evidence led to the label.
Why visual polish is a weak authenticity test
Fan artists can reproduce Rockstar’s color palette, typography and cinematic lighting. Editors can combine assets from trailers with new backgrounds. Generative AI can produce convincing game-like scenes and can also alter a genuine frame. A logo or watermark can be added after the file leaves its original source. None of those surface features identifies the publisher.

GamesRadar’s August 2026 reporting described fake GTA 6 clips with possible irregularities and emphasized how difficult it can be to know what is genuine. Treat those observations as warning signs that justify checking provenance. Do not turn them into a checklist that supposedly proves a file is AI-generated. A clean-looking image may still be fabricated, while compression or an ordinary editing mistake can make an authentic frame look strange.

Text and interface clues
Unnatural lettering, inconsistent menu spacing, impossible control prompts or a user interface that does not align with the rest of the scene can indicate editing or generation. Compare any visible interface with confirmed Rockstar footage. If the image contains no comparable official material, record the discrepancy as an uncertainty rather than a conclusion.
Motion clues in videos
When checking a clip, watch transitions instead of relying on a single still. Look for objects that change shape, hands that do not maintain contact, reflections that move independently or text that mutates between frames. These are reasons to investigate the source and edits; they are not a substitute for identifying who published the footage.
Understand the 2022 intrusion without overextending it
Real stolen development footage has existed. After a 2022 network intrusion, Rockstar Games said: We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.
GamesRadar reported that company statement.
That statement confirms the intrusion and the theft of early footage in that incident. It does not authenticate every screenshot posted later. Someone can attach the history of the 2022 breach to an unrelated fan image, an edited frame or a new fabrication. Use the incident as historical context, not as a blanket certificate for anything described as a leak.

Handle current leak claims carefully
Leak status is time-sensitive. In an August 21, 2026 report, Axios said Rockstar had not officially confirmed the footage circulating at that time. That statement describes the status reported on that date; a later Rockstar release or statement could change it.

Before publishing or repeating a claim, check the latest official Rockstar media and announcements, then look for credible reporting about the specific clip or screenshot. Do not convert a report that says “Rockstar has not confirmed this” into either “Rockstar denied it” or “the leak is real.” Those are different claims.
Separate three questions about a purported leak
- Did Rockstar publish it? An official archive match answers yes.
- Could it have come from development? Historical context may make that plausible, but plausibility is not proof.
- Has this particular file been authenticated? Only item-specific, reliable provenance can answer that. If none exists, retain the unverified label.
How to evaluate reposts, crops and compilations
Social posts often remove the information needed to identify an image. A compilation may combine official trailers, fan art and alleged leaks under one headline. A cropped frame can hide a watermark, interface mismatch or editing seam. Downloadable official collections can also be re-encoded by third parties, so file quality alone does not establish origin.
For each item in a collage or video, split the analysis into separate records:
| Record | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Visual item | The uncropped image or clip, including visible edges and any text. |
| Claim | The exact statement attached to it, such as “new gameplay” or “official screenshot.” |
| First traceable source | The earliest identifiable account, article or official page. |
| Evidence status | Exact Rockstar match, established fan authorship, credible item-specific report or no reliable provenance. |
| Conclusion | Official Rockstar image, fan-made, edited repost or unverified. |
This prevents one confirmed trailer frame from lending credibility to unrelated images in the same post.

“It looks exactly like GTA VI, so it must be real.”
Similarity demonstrates style, not provenance. Compare the file with Rockstar’s archive and trace its first source.
“It has Rockstar’s logo.”
Logos are easy to add to a graphic or repost. Require an official publication record.

“Millions of people shared it.”
Virality shows that an image traveled widely. It does not show who made it or whether the caption is true.

It may be a frame from an official video, a genuine but unconfirmed development leak, a fan work or an edit. Use “unverified” unless reliable evidence narrows the possibilities.
“The 2022 breach proves this is leaked footage.”
The breach confirms that some early footage was stolen, not that every later claim descends from it. Authenticate the individual file.

Visual artifacts can result from compression, editing or generation. Treat them as investigation prompts, not a standalone test.
Examples of defensible conclusions
Exact archive match with a misleading caption
You find the same frame in Rockstar’s screenshot collection, but a repost labels it as a newly leaked mission. The correct description is: “This is an official Rockstar image; the repost’s mission and leak claims are not established by the archive match.”
Unlisted image with a named fan creator
The image is absent from Rockstar’s page, and the artist’s original post shows a making-of sequence and identifies it as fan art. You can label it fan-made, while noting that it is not an official screenshot.
Best Value
Anonymous image with no corroboration
The file is not in the archive, the first source cannot be identified and no reputable outlet has authenticated it. Call it “a purported GTA VI screenshot” or “unverified,” not real or fake.
Clip with visible anomalies
A circulating video contains unstable lettering and unnatural object movement. Those details justify checking its origin and edits. Unless a reliable source establishes that it is fabricated, the careful result remains unverified.
How to report your finding clearly
State the evidence before the verdict. A useful report includes the date checked, the official material compared and the exact scope of the conclusion:
- “The image matches a screenshot currently published on Rockstar Games’ official GTA VI media page.”
- “The image does not appear in the official archive checked on October 13, 2026; no reliable source establishes its origin, so it remains unverified.”
- “The creator identifies this as fan art, and the file is not an official Rockstar release.”
- “The 2022 Rockstar intrusion confirms stolen early footage existed, but it does not authenticate this separate image.”
Avoid stronger wording than the evidence supports. “Rockstar has not confirmed it” is not the same as “Rockstar says it is fake,” and “not found” is not the same as “disproved.”
Keep the check current
Rockstar’s media archive is a live reference, and leak claims can change after a new trailer, screenshot drop or company statement. If you revisit an image later, repeat the archive comparison and update the date. Preserve earlier wording when it accurately described the evidence at that time, but do not present an old “unconfirmed” status as the current position without checking for newer official material.
The most reliable habit is source-first verification: establish whether Rockstar published the image, identify who first circulated any unlisted file, and reserve certainty for evidence that actually proves provenance. Everything else belongs under unverified.
