Do not classify a Greenland climate study from the word “precipitation” alone. Find the exact variable definition, then read how the quantity was measured or modelled. Rainfall is liquid-phase precipitation; snowfall can mean solid precipitation or snow accumulation; and a total or accumulated-precipitation variable may combine rain and snow unless the study explicitly separates the phases.
Also check the accumulation period, quality-control status, geographic coverage and dataset version. A station reading, a satellite estimate and a modelled phase classification answer different questions, even when they use the same units.

Start with the variable definition, not the headline
Authors often use “precipitation” as a broad category. The decisive evidence is usually in a table of variables, a data dictionary or the methods section. Look for the exact name, units, phase definition and accumulation window.
| Label in a study | What it normally indicates | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Rain, rainfall or liquid precipitation | Precipitation identified as liquid water | Whether it was measured directly, inferred from weather conditions or corrected by a model |
| Snow, snowfall or solid precipitation | Precipitation identified as ice or snow | Whether the value is fresh snowfall, a water-equivalent amount or accumulation on the surface |
| Total, accumulated or all-phase precipitation | A quantity that may combine liquid and solid phases | Whether rain and snow were separated before aggregation |
| Precipitation water equivalent | The amount of water represented by rain or melted snow | Whether the source measured the water directly or converted snow depth or mass to water equivalent |
| Snow accumulation or surface accumulation | Change in snow stored on the surface | Whether wind redistribution, melt, compaction and density were included |
Millimetres, kilograms per square metre and similar mass-per-area units do not identify the phase. A millimetre total can describe rain, melted snow or a mixture. Units tell you the amount; the definition and method tell you what fell or accumulated.

Separate the three questions a paper may be answering
Is it measuring liquid precipitation?
A rainfall result should identify liquid-phase precipitation explicitly. The instrument may be a precipitation gauge, but the study might instead infer phase from meteorological observations. Treat a derived liquid estimate as an estimate, not as a direct rain-gauge observation.
Is it measuring solid precipitation or snow on the ground?
“Snowfall” can refer to snow that fell during an event, while “snow accumulation” refers to what remained on the surface. Those are not interchangeable. Wind can move snow after it falls, and melt or compaction can reduce the measured surface increase. A paper that observes accumulation is not automatically reporting the snowfall that occurred in the atmosphere.
Is it reporting all precipitation together?
An accumulated-precipitation field may add rain and snow in a common water-equivalent unit. Unless the authors provide a phase split or describe a classification rule, you cannot call that total a rainfall or snowfall measurement. The safest description is “total precipitation” or “accumulated precipitation as defined by the dataset.”

The method tells you whether a value is observed, inferred or modelled. Identify the source before interpreting the number.
Direct station observations
A gauge or other station instrument samples conditions at one location. The result is a point observation, not automatically a Greenland-wide value. Instrument exposure, wind undercatch and maintenance can affect solid-precipitation measurements, so look for the paper’s correction procedures.
Manual Greenland observations in DMI services
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) provides Greenland station precipitation records, including manual observations at some sites. A manual reading may not be taken every day. One value can therefore represent more than one day’s accumulation. If the record lacks the previous expected date, that is a warning to inspect the observation interval rather than assume a daily total.

Automatic weather stations and network products
PROMICE/GC-NET provides automatic weather-station data with both measured and derived variables. Do not assume that every field in a network product is a direct sensor measurement: read the variable metadata to see which quantities are calculated.

Satellite products
Satellite precipitation products estimate conditions over a footprint or grid. Their phase labels and corrections come from the product algorithm, not from a gauge at every pixel. Check the product documentation for spatial resolution, time step, phase treatment and validation.
Models and reanalyses
A model or reanalysis can provide continuous fields where stations are sparse. A modelled rain or snow field is a calculated estimate constrained by observations and model physics. Report it as modelled or derived precipitation, and name the product, rather than presenting it as direct station rainfall.
Look for the phase-classification rule
Some Greenland studies determine whether precipitation is rain or snow from other meteorological variables. The 2021 American Meteorological Society paper Quantifying Rainfall in Greenland: A Combined Observational and Modeling Approach describes identifying precipitation phase with temperature and relative humidity and applying correction methods. A result produced this way is a phase estimate based on the stated rule; it is not the same as a liquid-only gauge reading.
When you find a phase rule, record:
- Which inputs were used, such as air temperature, wet-bulb temperature or relative humidity.
- The threshold or classification scheme that assigns rain, snow or mixed precipitation.
- Whether mixed-phase events are allowed or forced into one category.
- Any gauge, wind or undercatch correction applied after classification.
- Whether the method was validated against observations and for which sites or seasons.
If the paper says only that it “uses precipitation,” without defining a phase rule or separate phase variable, keep the interpretation at the total-precipitation level.

Check the time window before calling a value “daily”
Accumulation periods are part of the measurement. DMI defines the parameter precip_past24h as precipitation accumulated over the latest 24 hours. Its hourly and shorter-period fields likewise refer to their named windows. A 24-hour value and an hourly value cannot be compared as if they represented the same period.

For every precipitation series, write down:
- The start and end time of the accumulation window.
- The time zone and observation convention.
- Whether the timestamp marks the beginning or end of the interval.
- Whether the interval is fixed, rolling or irregular.
- How missing records and multi-day manual readings were handled.
For manual Greenland observations, inspect adjacent dates and any field indicating the previous observation. If a reading spans several days, describe it as a multi-day accumulation and do not divide it by the number of days unless the study explicitly justifies that conversion.
Distinguish raw observations from quality-controlled climate data
DMI states that its raw meteorological observations are neither quality controlled nor processed. Its Greenland climate-data documentation describes monthly manual quality control, removal of erroneous observations and the possibility of gaps. A paper using one product should not be described as if it used the other.
Questions to ask about quality control
- Is the series raw, screened, homogenized or otherwise processed?
- Were suspect values removed, flagged or replaced?
- Are gaps left empty, filled by interpolation or handled statistically?
- Were phase-specific corrections applied before or after quality control?
- Does the published analysis use the provider’s current version or an archived release?
Quality control does not make a dataset complete. A carefully screened series can still contain long gaps, and a raw series can contain values that look plausible but have not been checked.

A station value describes conditions at a site. A gridded, reanalysis or model product describes an area represented by each grid cell. A regional estimate aggregates or models many locations. Use the study’s own geographic language.
DMI says spatial grids are not available for Greenland because the island’s area, topography and low station density make interpolation unsuitable. Therefore, a DMI station record should not be presented as a Greenland-wide precipitation map unless the study adds a separate modelling or gridding method.
For any result, record:
- Station name, coordinates or elevation, if it is a point observation.
- Network and site count, if multiple stations are used.
- Grid size, footprint or model domain, if it is spatial data.
- Whether the reported value is a local measurement, an area average or a regional extrapolation.
- How topography and the uneven station network affect representativeness.
Record the dataset, period and processing level
Two papers can use the same organization’s data service but different products. DMI documents separate station-climate and meteorological-observation services. PROMICE/GC-NET is a monitoring network and data product with measured and derived variables. Keep those sources distinct in your notes.

The DMI collection titled Greenland – DMI Historical Climate Data Collection 1784–2020 (2021) identifies a historical coverage period. “1784–2020” is metadata about the dataset’s time span, not a precipitation total or a claim that every year has equivalent observations.
Copy the exact:
- Dataset or product name.
- Release or version identifier.
- Variable name and units.
- Observation or model period.
- Processing level and correction scheme.
- Station, grid or network selection.
A step-by-step audit for any Greenland precipitation study
- Find the variable table. Search the paper and supplementary material for “rain,” “snow,” “phase,” “accumulation,” “water equivalent” and “precipitation.” Copy the exact variable label and units.
- Read its definition. Determine whether the value is liquid, solid, combined or surface accumulation. If the definition is absent, do not infer the phase from the units.
- Locate the method. Identify the gauge, snow sensor, manual observation, satellite product, model or reanalysis that produced the value.
- Check for a phase rule. Note temperature or humidity inputs, thresholds, mixed-phase treatment and correction methods. Label the result as derived when the phase is inferred.
- Verify the time window. Distinguish hourly, rolling 24-hour, calendar-day, monthly and irregular multi-day intervals. Inspect missing dates around manual observations.
- Check quality control. Establish whether the data are raw, quality controlled, corrected, gap-filled or homogenized.
- Check spatial support. Decide whether the result represents one station, a network, a grid cell or a regional estimate. Note any interpolation or model downscaling.
- Record the product version and period. Include the release, years covered and processing level so another reader can reproduce the interpretation.
- Write a qualified description. Use “measured,” “derived,” “modelled,” “water-equivalent,” “station-level” and similar terms precisely.
How to compare two studies without mixing unlike measurements
Use the following comparison grid. A numerical comparison is defensible only when the relevant dimensions align or the difference is explicitly accounted for.
| Comparison axis | Study A | Study B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase definition | Rain, snow, combined or not stated | Rain, snow, combined or not stated | Totals and phase-specific values are different quantities |
| Measurement type | Direct station, manual, satellite, model or derived | Direct station, manual, satellite, model or derived | Observed and inferred values have different uncertainties |
| Correction or phase method | Named method or not stated | Named method or not stated | Temperature/humidity rules and gauge corrections can change classification |
| Temporal window | Hourly, 24-hour, monthly or irregular | Hourly, 24-hour, monthly or irregular | Different windows cannot be treated as equal accumulations |
| Missing-data treatment | Flagged, removed, filled or not stated | Flagged, removed, filled or not stated | Gaps and imputation affect totals and trends |
| Spatial support | Point, network, grid or region | Point, network, grid or region | A station is not automatically representative of Greenland |
| Quality-control level | Raw or quality controlled | Raw or quality controlled | Screening and processing alter the usable record |
| Dataset and version | Exact product and release | Exact product and release | Provider services can contain multiple non-equivalent products |
If a cell is not established by the paper, write “not stated” in your notes. Do not fill the gap with an assumption based on the study’s title.
Common misreadings and how to correct them
“Precipitation” means rain
Correction: use the variable definition. Precipitation is a category that can include rain, snow and mixed phases.
Millimetres mean liquid rain
Correction: millimetres can be liquid-equivalent snow or a combined total. Find the phase and conversion method.
Snowfall equals snow accumulation
Correction: snowfall is what falls; accumulation is what remains. Check whether the study measures an event, a depth change or a water-equivalent store.
Best Value
One timestamp means one calendar day
Correction: inspect the named window and previous observation. DMI manual readings may cover more than one day.
A clean-looking chart is quality controlled
Correction: verify the provider’s processing statement. Raw observations can be unprocessed, while quality-controlled records can still contain gaps.
A station average is a Greenland average
Correction: identify the spatial support. DMI notes that Greenland’s sparse, uneven network and complex terrain prevent a general spatial interpolation product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Correction: PROMICE/GC-NET includes measured and derived variables. Read each field’s metadata separately.
Language that keeps a summary accurate
When reporting a result, put the qualification next to the number or claim. Examples:
- “The study reports station precipitation accumulated over the provider’s stated 24-hour window.”
- “Rainfall is estimated from temperature and relative humidity using the paper’s phase-classification and correction method.”
- “The value is a modelled water-equivalent precipitation estimate, not a direct rain-gauge observation.”
- “The manual observation may span multiple days because the preceding observation date is missing.”
- “The record is quality controlled but contains documented gaps and represents the named station rather than Greenland as a whole.”
- “The historical dataset covers 1784–2020; that range describes availability, not a Greenland-wide precipitation statistic.”
A precise summary names the phase, method, interval, spatial support and processing level in the same paragraph. If one of those items is unknown, say so rather than silently converting a generic precipitation result into rain or snow.
