Check the individual product listing for a “Sponsored” or “Ad” label. Google says it is not compensated for clicks into Google Shopping results unless a result carries one of those labels. In this context, “organic” means an unpaid product result, which Google calls a free listing.
How to identify a paid Shopping ad
Look for “Sponsored” or “Ad” attached to the specific product offer. Google’s Shopping Help states: “Unless they’re labeled “Sponsored” or “Ad,” Google is not compensated for clicks into results on Google Shopping.” Google Shopping Help: Understand how shopping results are generated.
Use the label rather than the card’s position, appearance, or prominence. The exact layout can vary by country, device, and interface version, and Google does not establish one universal position for ads on every Shopping screen.
Why Shopping pages can show both types of result
A product grid may contain paid ad slots alongside free listings. Google says free listings can appear on the Shopping tab, where Shopping ads also continue to appear in ad slots. An item’s presence in a prominent grid—or in a Google product experience—does not by itself mean it is paid.

Google describes Shopping listings as ranked by relevance to the current search by default, while payment may also influence ranking and grouping for some sponsored offers. That is another reason not to treat order as a reliable way to classify a listing. See How Google Shopping works and Free listings for products.
What “organic result” means for a product listing
For product offers, Google’s clearer term is free listing: an eligible product result shown without payment for its placement. Google says eligible free listings may appear across Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images, and Lens. These are product results, not necessarily conventional web links such as blue links on a search page.
Google Ads Help also describes a “Sponsored” box for paid ads above organic web-search results. That guidance concerns general Search results; for a product offer on a Shopping surface, use the Shopping-specific label rule instead. Google Ads Help: Organic search result.

Merchant-side reporting as a cross-check
If you manage the product feed or analytics setup, Google reports free-listing clicks as organic traffic in Merchant Center. Its guidance says Analytics 4 can identify the source platform as “Shopping free listings.” This reporting can help distinguish free-listing traffic from paid Shopping ad traffic, but it is a merchant-side check rather than a substitute for reading the label on a shopper’s screen.
