Check the label attached to the listing. A Google Search advertisement is identified with wording such as “Sponsored” or “Ads” (and, in some placements, “Ad” or “Ads by Google”). Do not decide from position alone: paid listings can appear above, below, or among organic results. When available, open the listing’s information control and choose “Why This Ad” for additional context.
The reliable test: read the listing’s label
Google’s own consumer guidance says that when it shows ads, they are clearly labeled. In ordinary Search results, the label is commonly Ads or Sponsored. The wording can change by page type, region, device, or Search Network partner, so inspect the specific result in front of you rather than relying on one exact visual design.
The label belongs to the sponsored listing, not to the entire page. A results page may contain paid and unpaid entries together. Identify the boundary of each listing and check whether that individual result carries an advertising label.
- Label present: treat the result as a paid placement.
- No advertising label: Google presents it as an organic result or another non-ad search feature, although the page may contain paid listings elsewhere.
- Unclear label: enlarge the page, inspect the complete listing, and look for the information icon or “Why This Ad” control before drawing a conclusion.
Why the result’s position is not enough
People often assume that the first result is an advertisement and every result beneath it is organic. That shortcut is unreliable. Google says ads may appear at the top or bottom of a results page, and paid listings can be displayed around organic results. An advertisement can therefore be lower on the page, while an organic result can appear above another listing.
Placement is determined by more than one system. Google’s advertising system selects ads according to advertising-related signals, while organic results are matched using relevance signals. Because those systems can produce different ordering, location is not a dependable sponsorship test.

| What you observe | What it proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| A result is at the top | Only that it is currently displayed first in that section | It is sponsored |
| A result is at the bottom | Only that it is currently displayed there | It is organic |
| A result has an “Ads” or “Sponsored” label | Google identifies that listing as an advertisement | That the advertiser is trustworthy or that the page is the best answer |
| Several results appear together | They are part of the same visible results page or feature | That every listing in the group has the same sponsorship status |
How to check on a desktop browser
The exact colors and spacing can change, but the identification process is stable. Use the listing itself as the unit you are checking.
- Run the search and pause before opening a result. Let the page finish loading so labels and information controls are visible.
- Start at the listing’s headline and work outward. Check the small text immediately above or beside the headline, URL, or business information. Do not inspect only the first line of the page.
- Look for “Sponsored,” “Ads,” “Ad,” or “Ads by Google.” Any of these terms can identify a paid placement, depending on the Search surface.
- Confirm that the label belongs to that listing. Follow the visual grouping down through the headline, destination address, and description. A label at the beginning of a section may not apply to a separate result farther down.
- Use the information control if you need more detail. Select the information icon or the menu associated with the advertisement, then choose “Why This Ad” when that option is offered.
- Only then open the page. Opening the result does not change whether it was sponsored; the label is the relevant classification.
Browser zoom can help if a label is difficult to read. Zooming changes the display size, not the sponsorship status. If a privacy extension, ad blocker, translation tool, or unusual browser layout removes part of the page, try the same search in a standard, current browser window and compare the visible labeling.

How to check on a phone or tablet
Small screens compress labels and cards, so it is easier to mistake a paid listing for an ordinary result. The same rule applies: identify the label attached to the individual result.
- Wait for the result card to load completely. Do not classify a result while the page is still shifting.
- Read the text around the headline. Look for “Sponsored,” “Ads,” “Ad,” or “Ads by Google,” including text that appears above the destination address.
- Scroll carefully through the card. A paid block can appear below an organic listing, so do not stop checking after the first screenful.
- Open the result’s information menu when present. Look for the information icon and the “Why This Ad” option.
- Return to the results page after opening a destination. The destination website may not repeat the fact that you arrived through a sponsored listing.
Mobile interfaces can use different spacing, icons, or label placement from desktop interfaces. That visual difference does not eliminate the need for a label; it is a reason to inspect the card more closely.
Labels you may encounter
Google’s Search Network documentation describes several forms of advertising wording. They communicate the same basic distinction—this is a paid placement—but the exact term depends on where the listing is shown.
| Label wording | Likely context | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ads | Google Search results and common Search ad layouts | The listing is identified as an advertisement. |
| Sponsored | Some Search presentations and interfaces | The listing is paid or sponsored; do not treat it as an unpaid organic result. |
| Ad | Some Search Network or partner placements | The individual item is an advertisement. |
| Ads by Google | Some partner or network placements | The placement is identified as advertising associated with Google. |
These labels are not a promise that every person will see identical styling. Google can change interface design, and partner pages may arrange the label differently. The words and their attachment to the listing matter more than color, position, font, or a particular icon.

What “Why This Ad” can tell you
When the option is available, “Why This Ad” is Google’s built-in way to provide context about an advertisement. Open the listing’s information icon or related menu and select that option. The panel may explain why the ad was shown or provide information about the advertising context.
Use this control as a confirmation and explanation tool, not as a quality rating. It can help you understand the ad’s delivery context, but it does not establish that the advertiser is reliable, that its offer is the cheapest, or that its page is the most relevant answer. Evaluate those questions separately.
The control may not appear in every interface or partner placement. If it is absent, the visible advertising label remains the primary identification cue.
Sponsored results versus organic results
A sponsored result is a paid placement. An organic result is selected by Google’s search-ranking systems rather than purchased as an ad position. Google states that it does not accept payment for inclusion or higher ranking in its organic search results. That statement explains why a business can appear prominently without buying that organic position, and why an advertiser’s payment does not turn an ad into an organic result.
This distinction describes how the listing is placed; it does not tell you whether the destination is useful, safe, accurate, or appropriate for your needs. A paid result may be relevant, and an organic result may be poor. Sponsorship is a classification to recognize, not a complete verdict on the website.

Why labels may look different across pages
Google’s consumer help describes its own Search experience, while its Search Network documentation also covers partner websites. A partner page may use different spacing, typography, or label wording from google.com. Regional interfaces and product changes can also alter where the label appears.
For that reason, do not memorize a single color or location. Confirm three things instead:
- The wording identifies the item as an ad or sponsored placement.
- The wording is visually attached to the specific listing you are evaluating.
- The page is not presenting a separate organic result immediately beside or below the labeled item.
If a page shows a label you do not recognize, treat it cautiously until you can determine whether it is an advertising disclosure. The absence of the familiar word “Sponsored” does not automatically mean the result is organic; Google documents “Ad,” “Ads,” and “Ads by Google” as alternative wording in some placements.

Looking only for the word “Sponsored”
Depending on the placement, Google may show “Ads,” “Ad,” or “Ads by Google.” Inspect the complete label rather than searching for one exact word.
Confusing a website’s own marketing language with Google’s label
A destination page can call itself a partner, featured service, or special offer. That wording is not the Google Search disclosure. Classify the result from the label displayed on the Search page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUsing visual design as proof
Background shading, borders, icons, and colors can change. They are supporting cues at most. The explicit label is the dependable indicator established in Google’s guidance.
Assuming an ad label is a recommendation
The label tells you that the placement is paid. It does not verify the advertiser, guarantee the claims, or recommend the purchase.

What to do when you cannot see a label
Sometimes the issue is display rather than classification. Work through this short check:
- Expand the listing. On a phone, tap or scroll within the result card so hidden text is visible.
- Check the entire block. Read above the headline and below the destination address; the disclosure may not be on the same line as the title.
- Zoom or rotate the device. A larger layout can make a small label legible.
- Temporarily test a standard browser view. Extensions or custom interfaces can hide page elements.
- Look for “Why This Ad.” If the information control offers that option, the listing is an ad.
- Do not infer status from position alone. If no label is visible, record that the status is unclear rather than declaring the result organic.
Google’s published guidance describes the intended labeling system; it does not establish that every interface, region, device, or third-party page will look identical at every moment. A changing layout is a reason to verify carefully, not a reason to guess.

Google’s Search content policy says that sponsored content must not be concealed or misrepresented as independent content. The policy is part of Google’s stated approach to labeling paid material. The relevant policy page reports section updates in 2022 and 2023.
A policy is not the same as a guarantee that every screen will be presented perfectly or that every third-party page will use identical disclosure styling. If a result appears to hide or misrepresent sponsorship, document what you saw, avoid treating it as an ordinary organic recommendation, and use Google’s available reporting or feedback options.
Quick Recap
A fast decision checklist
- Did you inspect the individual listing rather than the page position?
- Does it carry “Sponsored,” “Ads,” “Ad,” or “Ads by Google” wording?
- Is the label clearly attached to that listing?
- Could a separate labeled or unlabeled result be immediately adjacent?
- Is the result on a Google Search page or a Search Network partner page?
- Is the information icon or “Why This Ad” control available?
- Have you avoided treating sponsorship as proof of quality or trustworthiness?
If the answer to the label question is yes, Google is identifying the listing as sponsored. If you cannot see a label, do not use its location as a substitute; inspect the full card and acknowledge the uncertainty.
