How to Tell Whether a Gas Leak Is Caused by Nearby Pipeline Work

You usually cannot tell from a gas smell, a nearby construction site, or when the symptoms began whether pipeline work caused a suspected gas leak. Treat any possible leak as an emergency: leave the area on foot and call 911 from a safe location. Tell responders what you noticed and that work is nearby; trained responders and the pipeline operator must assess the source.

What to do if you suspect a gas leak

  1. Leave immediately on foot. Move away from the suspected area. Do not stop to investigate, approach a crew or vehicle, or look for the leak.
  2. Avoid anything that could ignite gas. Do not use a phone, operate electrical switches, start an engine, or create a flame in the affected area.
  3. Call 911 from a safe location. Give the dispatcher the location, what you observed, when you noticed it, and that pipeline work or excavation is nearby, if known. Do not delay leaving to collect details.
  4. Notify the pipeline operator if you know who it is. A marker may list the operator and an emergency number. Do not approach a marker or suspected leak to read it. PHMSA says to leave the area by foot immediately; after notification, the operator dispatches trained personnel.

Signs that may indicate a leak—but cannot identify its cause

Possible warning signs include a gas odor, hissing or roaring, vapor, blowing dirt, bubbling in wet areas, fire, or dead or discolored vegetation. These are clues, not proof that a pipeline is leaking or that construction caused a problem.

Some transmission and gathering gas is odorless. The absence of a familiar smell is not an all-clear. If you see or hear something concerning near pipeline work, prioritize leaving and reporting it rather than trying to confirm the source. PHMSA lists possible leak signs and emergency steps.

Why nearby pipeline work does not prove what caused a leak

Excavation can damage a pipeline, and PHMSA identifies excavation damage as a possible cause of pipeline failures. Damage can range from harm to the pipe’s protective coating to a puncture. But proximity and timing alone cannot establish that a particular crew or project caused a suspected leak. Residents do not have a reliable way to determine the cause from visible signs.

PT520A Natural Gas Detector, Gas Leak Detector with 17-Inch Gooseneck, Locating The Source Like Propane, Methane, and Butane for Home and RV (Includes Battery x3) - Orange
  • Effective Gas Leak Detector: The TOPTES PT520A natural gas detector detects leaks of methane, propane, natural gas, LPG, butane, and more in tight spaces
  • Flexible Probe: The 17-inch gooseneck allows easy access to hard-to-reach areas like pipelines, storage tanks, gas fireplaces, and basements, ideal for both indoor and outdoor leak detection. During use, point the probe toward the suspected leak source and move as close as 1–5 cm
  • Visual and Audible Alarm: PT520A responds in 0.5 seconds, with 7 colored bars and a 75dB alarm that increase with gas concentration. Detection range: 50-10,000 ppm (Methane)
  • User-Friendly Functions: Enable or disable Auto Power-Off with the APO button to save power after 10 minutes of inactivity. The Mute button silences the alarm, and the non-slip, wear-resistant design ensures a secure, comfortable grip for easy handling
  • What You Get: 1×PT520A Gas Leak Detector, 3×AAA Batteries, 1×Protective Case, and 1×User Manual. Allow 30 seconds of warm-up in clean air before starting detection

Pipeline markers are useful context, not a precise map of the pipe: they give an approximate location and operator information, not the exact position or burial depth. A marker near a work site therefore does not show that a line was struck. Leave assessment to trained responders and the operator; report what you observed without approaching the site.

Call 911 for a suspected leak; call 811 before planned digging

Situation What to do Purpose
Possible active leak Leave on foot and call 911 from a safe location; notify the operator if known. Emergency response to a suspected hazard.
Planned excavation before digging begins Call 811 and wait for utility facilities to be marked. Prevent damage during planned digging, not report an emergency leak.

Do not call 811 instead of 911 when you suspect an active leak. PHMSA explains what to do for a suspected pipeline leak; 811 describes the separate before-you-dig process.

What responders need to know

Once you are safely away, share the suspected location, the signs you noticed, when they began, and any nearby excavation or pipeline work you know about. If you already know the operator’s name or emergency number, provide it. Do not return to the area, search for the source, or attempt a repair. The information you provide helps responders assess the report; it does not establish cause by itself.
