How to Tell Whether a Game Uses True HDR or an SDR-to-HDR Conversion

An HDR badge, a bright picture, or a television switching into HDR mode does not prove that a game rendered native HDR. The reliable test is to isolate conversion features, inspect the signal’s color space, and compare controlled scenes. Native HDR is authored in the game’s rendering pipeline; Windows Auto HDR, a graphics-driver enhancement, or a display can instead remap an SDR image into an HDR signal.

What you are trying to distinguish

There are two fundamentally different routes to an HDR-looking result. In a native implementation, the game renders scene values intended for HDR, preserves highlight information above the SDR reference range, and outputs an HDR10-style signal. In a conversion, the game first produces an SDR image and another layer expands or remaps that image for an HDR-capable display.

Both routes can make Windows or a television report HDR. The difference is where the HDR information is created and who controls the tone mapping. That distinction matters when you are calibrating a display, diagnosing washed-out highlights, or deciding whether a game’s HDR controls actually affect its output.

How native HDR is rendered

Scene-referred values are created by the game

Microsoft’s Xbox GDK HDR10 sample describes a native path that renders a scene into an FP16 backbuffer. Pixel values can exceed 1.0, allowing the renderer to retain bright light sources and other highlight detail instead of clipping them to the SDR range. The game then converts Rec.709 primaries to Rec.2020 and applies the ST.2084 (PQ) transfer curve for 10-bit output.

That pipeline is authored content, not a filter applied after the game has already produced an SDR frame. Artists and engineers decide how bright materials, effects, skyboxes, and interface elements should be in relation to reference white. A native HDR calibration screen may expose paper-white, peak-brightness, or similar controls so those decisions can be adapted to your display.

The SDR path is materially different

The same Microsoft sample describes an SDR path that tone-maps or clips to an 8-bit Rec.709 image. Once those highlights have been compressed or discarded, a later conversion layer cannot recreate the original scene values. It can increase apparent brightness and color range, but it is operating on the finished SDR image.

Some games can render an HDR-capable swap chain while still using an SDR-style internal pipeline. In that case the transport format alone is not proof of native authoring; you need to establish what the game rendered before the final output conversion.

What Windows Auto HDR does

Microsoft describes Auto HDR as a conversion feature for many older games that are SDR-only. When enabled on an HDR-capable display, it automatically increases the color range and brightness to HDR. The game does not need to contain a native HDR renderer for an HDR signal to appear.

Windows 11 places the control at Settings > System > Display. Select the HDR display, expand the HDR controls, and turn Auto HDR off while testing. Also disable any graphics-driver option that advertises SDR-to-HDR conversion, game HDR enhancement, or an “AI HDR” mode. Leaving either layer enabled can make an SDR game look convincing enough to be misidentified as native HDR.

Why an HDR badge is weak evidence

A television or monitor’s HDR icon normally reports a mode or signal condition. It does not identify which component authored the pixels. A display can enter HDR mode because Windows Auto HDR, a driver, or the game selected an HDR swap chain.

Microsoft’s SetHDRMetaData documentation also cautions that metadata does not change pixel interpretation. Windows does not guarantee that swap-chain metadata reaches the monitor, and monitors handle HDR metadata inconsistently. A badge therefore confirms, at most, that the display detected an HDR-related signal; it cannot establish that the game’s renderer supplied scene-referred HDR values.

A verification workflow that separates the layers

1. Establish a clean baseline

  1. Connect the display directly to the computer or console path you are testing and select the display in Windows 11 at Settings > System > Display.
  2. Turn off Auto HDR for that display.
  3. Open the graphics driver’s game or display controls and disable every feature described as SDR-to-HDR, HDR enhancement, dynamic contrast, or AI HDR. Driver names and locations vary, so use the feature description rather than assuming a particular vendor’s label.
  4. Keep the display’s own picture mode fixed for the entire comparison. Do not switch between a filmmaker mode, a game mode, and a vivid mode while judging the game pipeline.

If the game’s appearance changes dramatically when a conversion feature is disabled, that feature was contributing to the result. That observation still does not prove the game is SDR-only; it simply tells you that the OS or driver was part of the previous output path.

2. Check the game’s HDR controls

Look in the game’s video, display, or graphics menu for an HDR enable switch and calibration controls such as paper white, peak brightness, maximum luminance, or a logo-black-level adjustment. A game-specific calibration screen is useful supporting evidence because it suggests that the developer expected HDR output and wants you to align reference values with the display.

Do not treat the menu as conclusive. A wrapper, post-process filter, or platform layer can expose HDR controls without the game’s main renderer being fully scene-referred. After changing a control, verify that the active signal and the image behavior change with conversion layers disabled.

3. Inspect the active output color space

When diagnostic information is available, look for the color-space value reported by the swap chain, operating system, capture path, or display information panel. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance identifies DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020 as the active HDR color-space value for an HDR display. The value indicates full-range RGB using the ST.2084/PQ transfer function and Rec.2020 primaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Native HDR10 output is associated with that Rec.2020/ST.2084 combination. An SDR game begins with Rec.709 or sRGB-style signaling, even if a later layer converts the final frame. If your diagnostic view reports Rec.709 or sRGB while Auto HDR and driver conversion are off, you are seeing an SDR path or an SDR-style portion of the pipeline.

Color-space inspection is stronger than the television badge but still not a complete authorship test. A game can output an HDR-formatted swap chain after applying its own SDR-to-HDR transform, and an intermediary can alter the reported state. Use the signal reading together with the rendering and visual checks below.

4. Compare controlled scenes

Choose scenes that contain bright lamps, sunlit clouds, neon signs, explosions, and neutral gray or white surfaces. Use the same display mode, viewing distance, game brightness settings, and room lighting for every comparison.

  • Highlight gradation: Native scene-referred HDR can preserve separate texture and color steps in bright areas. A conversion often lifts the whole SDR image and may flatten or remap the brightest regions.
  • Reference white and interface elements: In a native implementation, paper white and UI brightness should remain deliberately placed relative to the scene. A conversion layer may brighten the interface along with the world, or leave it at an SDR-like level while the background is remapped.
  • Shadow behavior: A global conversion can raise dark tones or alter contrast throughout the frame. Native tone mapping is more likely to apply different decisions to scene highlights, midtones, and black levels, although the exact appearance depends on the developer’s grading.
  • Color volume: Saturated lights and emissive effects may retain more separation in native HDR. A converted image can look more colorful, but added saturation alone does not demonstrate that the game authored wide-gamut values.

These are inferences from the documented scene-referred and SDR paths, not a universal visual fingerprint. Artistic grading, a limited display, or a poorly implemented native mode can produce similar symptoms.

5. Test with the game and conversion layer independently

  1. Run the game with Auto HDR and driver conversion disabled. Record whether the game still offers HDR controls and what color space is reported.
  2. Enable the game’s HDR option, if present, without changing any display picture setting. Check the signal again and repeat the controlled-scene comparison.
  3. Exit the game and re-enable only Auto HDR for the same title. If the image changes while the game settings remain fixed, Windows is supplying a separate conversion path.
  4. If your driver offers a per-game HDR enhancement, test it as a third, separate condition. Do not enable both driver conversion and Auto HDR when trying to attribute the result.

This A/B method identifies which layer changes the output. It does not require a particular television, GPU, or calibration instrument.

6. Treat metadata and capture screenshots carefully

HDR metadata can be absent, ignored, or interpreted differently by a monitor. A screenshot or video capture may also pass through an SDR conversion, so the file you view is not necessarily the signal the display received. Use the live output’s color-space report and display behavior rather than relying on a badge, a screenshot, or a capture card label alone.

Native HDR and conversion side by side

Property Native HDR path SDR-to-HDR conversion
Rendering origin The game authors scene-referred HDR values in its renderer. The game first produces an SDR image; Windows, a driver, or another layer remaps it.
Internal example FP16 backbuffer with values above 1.0, followed by HDR output conversion. 8-bit Rec.709/sRGB-style image expanded after SDR tone mapping or clipping.
HDR10 signaling Rec.2020 primaries with the ST.2084/PQ transfer curve and 10-bit output. May eventually use the same HDR-formatted signal, even though the source image was SDR.
Tone-mapping owner Primarily the game, adapted to the display’s measured capabilities. Operating system, graphics driver, or display performs the additional remap.
Highlight behavior Authored scene-referred highlights can retain gradation above SDR white. The converter works from already tone-mapped SDR values and may lift or compress the entire image.
Best evidence HDR controls, HDR color-space output, and consistent authored highlight/UI behavior with conversion off. Appearance or signal changes when Auto HDR or driver enhancement is toggled.

Understand the signal terms

Rec.709 and sRGB

Rec.709 is the color-primary standard associated with conventional HD SDR video. PC applications commonly use sRGB-like transfer behavior for SDR content. These signals are designed around an SDR reference white and an 8-bit-style range, even when the game internally uses higher precision.

Rec.2020 and ST.2084/PQ

HDR10-style output uses the wider Rec.2020 primary definition and the ST.2084 perceptual quantizer (PQ) transfer curve. Microsoft’s sample states: “Therefore, to output an HDR signal, it needs to use Rec.2020 color primaries with the ST.2084 curve.” A report of DXGI_COLOR_SPACE_RGB_FULL_G2084_NONE_P2020 is consistent with that encoding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These terms describe the encoded signal, not proof of content authorship. A conversion layer can package an SDR frame in HDR10 signaling. Conversely, a game can contain HDR-aware rendering but be forced through an SDR output mode by the operating system, driver, cable path, or display configuration.

Display capability changes what you can see

Two displays receiving the same native HDR frame can produce different results. Microsoft’s DirectX guidance notes that HDR displays vary greatly in luminance and gamut. Tone mapping should account for measured maximum content light level (MaxCLL), minimum luminance, and the display’s color primaries instead of assuming one universal panel capability.

The Xbox sample gives 80 nits as the SDR specification’s paper-white reference. It lists approximately 120–150 nits for an SDR television, 200–300 nits for a PC monitor, and about 550 nits for a smartphone as example consumer reference levels. These are reference examples from the sample, not universal limits or guarantees for every product.

HDR Gaming Interest Group (HGIG) guidance describes display categories and tone-map ranges using 600-nit, 1000-nit, 4000-nit, and 10,000-nit values. Those figures define categories and ranges in the guidance; they are not a requirement that every game or display reach each level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HGIG also distinguishes Primary and Extended HDR ranges and recommends retrieving display luminance values so critical game objects retain gradation. A game may therefore be native HDR while still clipping a bright cloud on a low-luminance display, or look subdued when its tone mapper is configured for a brighter target than your panel can deliver.

How to interpret common test results

The game has an HDR menu, but the signal stays SDR

Check Windows HDR for the selected display, the connection mode, and the game’s fullscreen or borderless setting. If diagnostics continue to report Rec.709 or sRGB, the menu may control an internal effect without selecting an HDR10 output, or another layer may be forcing SDR. The menu alone is not proof.

The signal is HDR10, but disabling Auto HDR changes nothing

That result is compatible with a native HDR mode, provided the game’s HDR option is enabled and the driver is not applying its own conversion. It can also mean that another conversion layer remains active or that the game is packaging an SDR image as HDR. Confirm the color-space report and inspect highlight and UI behavior before drawing a final conclusion.

The television shows HDR on the desktop

Windows can keep the display in HDR mode while showing SDR applications. The badge then tells you about the desktop output mode, not the game renderer. Test while the game is running and use the game’s output settings plus the active color-space reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Auto HDR makes the picture brighter, so it must be native

The opposite is true: a visible change after enabling Auto HDR demonstrates that Windows is transforming the image in that test condition. It does not say whether the game also has a separate native HDR mode; test the game with Auto HDR off to answer that question.

HDR looks wrong after calibration

Return the display to one fixed picture mode, reset the game’s HDR calibration, and verify the panel’s measured or advertised luminance target. A mismatch between the game’s assumed peak brightness and the display’s actual capability can cause clipping, dull highlights, or an elevated black floor without changing whether the renderer is native HDR.

Who owns tone mapping?

Tone mapping is the step that fits scene brightness into the display’s available range. In a native implementation, the game usually owns the creative mapping and adapts it to display information. In an SDR conversion, Windows or the driver estimates how to expand the finished SDR frame. The television then applies its own panel and picture-mode processing in either case.

Because several tone mappers can be chained, avoid stacking them during diagnosis. Run one controlled test with the game’s HDR mode, Auto HDR off, driver enhancements off, and a fixed display mode. Then add one layer at a time. If each layer changes the result, record the order; the last processor can undo or obscure decisions made earlier in the chain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical confidence checklist

  • Auto HDR is off for the selected Windows 11 display.
  • Graphics-driver SDR-to-HDR and AI HDR features are off.
  • The display picture mode and its HDR processing remain unchanged during comparisons.
  • The game has been tested with its own HDR option both off and on, where available.
  • The active signal has been checked for Rec.709/sRGB versus Rec.2020 with ST.2084/PQ.
  • Controlled scenes include bright highlights, neutral reference surfaces, shadows, and interface elements.
  • Any conclusion accounts for the panel’s luminance and gamut limits.
  • A television or monitor HDR badge is treated as confirmation of mode, not proof of game authorship.

What you can and cannot prove

You can establish whether Windows Auto HDR or a driver enhancement is contributing by toggling each layer independently. You can identify whether the active output is SDR-like or HDR10-like by inspecting the reported color space. You can gather strong evidence of native authoring from game controls, signal behavior, and consistent highlight placement with conversion disabled.

You cannot prove authorship from a badge, a single screenshot, a brighter image, or metadata alone. Nor can you infer implementation quality solely from the presence of a native HDR signal: a poorly tuned native mode may still clip highlights or misplace paper white. The most defensible conclusion is therefore a pipeline description, such as “native HDR output with Auto HDR disabled” or “SDR game converted by Auto HDR,” rather than a claim based on appearance alone.

Do you need a colorimeter?

No physical product is required to perform the basic determination. Windows and game settings, an available color-space diagnostic, and controlled visual comparisons are sufficient to separate the major paths. Optional calibration hardware can measure luminance and color more precisely, but it is a measurement aid, not a prerequisite for deciding whether Auto HDR or a driver conversion is active.
