How to Tell Whether a Game Uses Generative AI

The most reliable answer comes from a named disclosure, not from an odd-looking image or a blank store page. Check the game’s storefront disclosure, determine whether it refers to pre-generated or live-generated content, then corroborate it with the developer’s or publisher’s own FAQ, credits, terms, privacy notice, or announcement. If those sources do not identify AI use, the accurate conclusion is that you could not confirm it from the sources checked—not that the game definitely used no AI.

What “uses generative AI” can mean

“Generative AI” describes systems that produce new text, images, voices, music, animation, code, or other content from a prompt or other input. In a game, that can mean very different things. A studio might use an image model while making concept art, ship AI-assisted textures in the final build, or generate dialogue during play in response to what a player types. Those cases should not be collapsed into one yes-or-no label.

Pre-generated content

Steam’s Content Survey describes pre-generated content as material made with AI tools during development that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Examples can include artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. The generation happens before release or before a build is delivered; the player receives the resulting files or assets as part of the game.

Live-generated content

Live-generated content is created by an AI system while the game is running. A character might produce a new line of dialogue after a player enters text, or a system might create an image, quest, or voice response on demand. Steam asks developers to explain safeguards intended to prevent illegal output when they disclose this kind of use.

Development assistance is a separate question

A developer can use an AI tool for brainstorming, coding assistance, debugging, or internal drafts without shipping generated material to players. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” The survey section is aimed primarily at generative AI used to create content that ships with the product and is consumed by players, rather than every productivity use inside a studio.

This distinction also separates generative AI from traditional game AI. A non-player character following a decision tree, a navigation system finding a path, or an enemy adapting to your position may be sophisticated software, but those systems do not necessarily generate new player-facing content. Look for evidence that a model creates content, not merely that the game contains “AI.”

Step-by-step: checking a particular game

1. Identify the storefront, edition, and date

Start by recording where you are checking the game: Steam, a console marketplace, a publisher launcher, or another store. Note the platform, edition, and the date you inspected the page. A disclosure can differ between stores, regions, early-access builds, and later updates. A statement attached to a PC release does not automatically describe a console version or a subsequent remaster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Read the store page’s AI disclosure

On Steam, look for the generative-AI information supplied through the developer Content Survey. Valve’s current guidance covers generative AI used in development or in the product, with emphasis on content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. The guidance names artwork, sound, narrative, and localization as examples.

Do not stop at a badge or a single word. Open the disclosure and read its explanation. The useful evidence is the developer’s description of what was generated and when, not the assumption that every title marked “AI” uses the same technique.

3. Determine whether the disclosure is pre-generated or live-generated

Classify the statement using Steam’s two categories:

  • Pre-generated: AI-assisted material was created during development and is included in the shipped game.
  • Live-generated: the game creates material with AI while it is running, usually in response to player input or changing game state.

If the wording says only that AI was used “during development,” check whether it identifies any shipped asset. That phrase may describe internal assistance rather than player-facing content. If it says the game generates responses in real time, look for the stated guardrails and any explanation of what data or services process the player’s input.

4. Identify the content type

Record the specific category named: images, textures, animation, music, sound effects, voices, dialogue, narrative, localization, or another form of content. “AI-generated content” without a category is weaker than a statement such as “some character voices are generated at runtime.” The category tells you what part of the player experience is implicated and what you should verify elsewhere.

5. Check the developer’s and publisher’s own material

Search the official website and support pages for an FAQ, announcement, development blog, credits, privacy notice, or terms of service. Look for concrete wording about generated dialogue, voices, images, music, or other content. A direct statement from the company is useful corroboration because it can explain the feature in more detail than a store field.

Terms for one Steam-hosted game, for example, state that character dialogue, voices, and behavior are generated by AI systems in response to player input and describe processing by third-party AI services. That kind of language is direct evidence about that game’s stated operation. It is not evidence that other games use the same systems, and it does not by itself establish how every asset in the title was made.

6. Check the privacy implications of live generation

When a game generates content from player input, read the privacy notice and terms for information about what is sent to an external service, how long it is retained, and whether account or voice data is processed. A disclosure of live generation tells you that a feature exists; the privacy documents may tell you what leaves your device. Treat those as separate findings and quote the scope precisely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Compare the result with the store’s policy

Do not assume that Steam’s disclosure method exists on every storefront. A UK Parliament Commons Library briefing published on 20 January 2026 reported that Steam required disclosure of pre-generated or live-generated AI content, while Epic Games’ store did not require similar developer disclosures at the time of that briefing. Policies can change, so check the current rules for the store you are using.

8. Save the evidence and record what remains unknown

Capture the wording, page title, platform, edition, and access date. If the page changes, your notes show exactly what the developer disclosed at that time. Separate confirmed facts from open questions: “the developer discloses AI-generated voices” is different from “the game may have used AI somewhere in production.”

How to interpret common disclosure wording

What you find What it establishes What it does not establish
“Pre-generated AI content” AI-assisted material was made during development and ships in the game. It does not show that the game generates new content while running.
“Live-generated AI content” An AI system creates content during play; the disclosure should explain the feature and safeguards. It does not identify every asset made before release or prove that all dialogue is generated.
A named category such as art, sound, narrative, or localization The developer has identified the affected type of player-facing content. It does not establish that other categories were made with AI.
“AI used during development” with no shipped-content detail The developer acknowledges some development use. It does not, by itself, prove that generated material appears in the final game.
A detailed official FAQ, terms clause, or announcement The company has provided a more specific account of the feature or asset. It remains a company disclosure, not an independent audit of every production file.
No AI disclosure on a store page Nothing was disclosed in that location at the time you checked. It does not prove that no AI was used, especially where the storefront has no equivalent requirement.

Why visual clues are not proof

Players often notice a hand with an unusual number of fingers, inconsistent lettering, a synthetic voice, repeated facial details, or prose that feels machine-written. Those observations can be useful leads, but they cannot identify the tool, the asset’s provenance, or whether a human later edited it. A studio might have used procedural generation, stock material, outsourcing, compression artifacts, or a deliberate art style instead.

Use a visual anomaly to decide what to investigate next. Check the credits, developer statements, patch notes, and terms for a named explanation. Do not present a screenshot or a sound clip as conclusive evidence unless an authoritative source connects it to generative AI.

How to compare two games without oversimplifying

If you are comparing titles, use the same questions for each one and keep the storefront and inspection date attached to every result. A single “AI or not” score hides important differences.

Comparison axis Question to ask
Storefront disclosure Does the store provide a generative-AI disclosure, and what exactly does it say?
Generation timing Is the content pre-generated during development or live-generated while the game runs?
Content type Does the statement identify art, sound, voices, narrative, localization, or another category?
Developer explanation Does an official FAQ, announcement, credit, privacy notice, or terms document provide concrete details?
Store and date Which storefront, region, edition, and inspection date does the evidence cover?

For example, one game might disclose pre-generated localization on Steam and say nothing about runtime systems. Another might disclose live-generated character dialogue and explain its moderation controls. Calling both simply “AI games” would erase the difference that matters to a player concerned about authorship, safety, bandwidth, or data processing.

What Steam’s disclosure does—and does not—guarantee

Steam’s survey is a disclosure mechanism, not a claim that every developer statement has been independently audited. Valve says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output under the same general rules as non-AI content, and that the survey helps identify products that may require updates. That process can surface information and policy issues, but it is not a forensic inventory of every file or tool used by a studio.

Use careful attribution: “the developer discloses,” “the game’s terms say,” or “Steam’s page identifies.” Avoid upgrading those statements to “independent testing proved” unless you have separate evidence. If a developer changes its implementation, an old store disclosure may no longer describe the current build; recheck after a major update.

Why industry statistics cannot answer a single-game question

The Game Developers Conference 2025 survey reported that 52% of respondents worked at companies where generative-AI tools were used, and 36% personally used those tools. Those figures describe survey respondents and their workplaces. They do not show that a particular game contains generated assets, that a studio shipped AI-made content, or that a named developer used a model on the title you are investigating.

Use the numbers as context for why a disclosure may be worth checking, not as evidence about an individual game. The relevant proof still has to come from that game’s store page or official materials.

Handling ambiguous or conflicting evidence

The store is silent, but players claim the game uses AI

Check whether the storefront requires disclosure, then search official materials. If no authoritative statement appears, report that the claim could not be confirmed from the sources checked. Do not convert community suspicion into a fact.

The store says “AI,” but the developer says it was only an internal tool

Record both statements and identify the scope of each. The store entry may cover a broader survey question, while the developer’s explanation may clarify that no generated material shipped. Look for an updated disclosure or a statement tied to a particular build before choosing a definitive description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The terms describe live AI, but the feature is optional

State that the game includes a live-generation feature and that it is optional, if the terms say so. Optional use still matters for players who enable it, but it should not be described as if every session uses the system.

A later patch changes the feature

Use version and date qualifiers. Say what was disclosed for the build you checked and identify any later announcement or patch note that changes the behavior. Do not apply a current statement retroactively to an earlier release without evidence.

A news report repeats an allegation

Trace the claim to the developer or storefront. The UK Parliament briefing noted that Epic Games did not confirm an allegation about AI-generated content in Fortnite Chapter 7. That example illustrates why an unconfirmed report or player theory should remain labeled as such.

A compact verification worksheet

For each game, fill in these fields before publishing or sharing a conclusion:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Game and build: title, platform, edition, and version if shown.
  2. Storefront: store name, region, and the date checked.
  3. Disclosure wording: copy the relevant sentence accurately.
  4. Generation type: pre-generated, live-generated, development-only, or not stated.
  5. Content category: art, sound, voices, dialogue, narrative, localization, or another named type.
  6. Official corroboration: identify the developer or publisher FAQ, announcement, credits, privacy notice, or terms and summarize only what it says.
  7. Player-data detail: for live features, note whether the official text describes third-party processing or other input handling.
  8. Unresolved points: list what the available sources do not establish.

This format keeps a verifiable disclosure separate from inference and makes it easier to update the finding when a store page or game build changes.

How to phrase the final answer responsibly

Use the narrowest statement supported by the evidence. Good formulations include:

  • “The Steam disclosure identifies pre-generated AI-assisted artwork that ships with the game.”
  • “The developer’s terms say that dialogue and voices are generated in response to player input.”
  • “The official materials acknowledge AI use during development but do not specify any shipped content.”
  • “I could not confirm generative-AI use from the storefront and official sources checked.”

Avoid saying “the game is AI-made,” “there is no AI in the game,” or “the developers secretly used AI” unless unusually strong, specific evidence supports that exact claim. Generative AI can be limited to one asset category, one optional feature, or one stage of production, and storefront rules differ.
