Start with the publisher’s label, then verify the product’s relationship to an existing game. A “sequel” is a relationship to an earlier release; an expansion adds content to a named base game; and DLC is a delivery category that can include expansions, maps, levels, characters, and even non-game extras. “Standalone” describes whether the product can be played on its own, so a game can be both standalone and a sequel.
When an announcement uses overlapping language, report exactly what the publisher calls it and describe what players receive, what they must own, and how the product is packaged. There is no single cross-industry test that resolves every borderline case.

The quickest way to classify an announcement
Read the announcement in this order:
- Find the explicit label. Look for “new full game,” “sequel,” “direct sequel,” “mainline entry,” “expansion,” “DLC,” “add-on,” or “content pack.” A publisher’s own wording is the strongest starting point.
- Identify the relationship to an earlier game. Is the product continuing a series or project as a separately announced game, or is it adding material to a specifically named base game?
- Check what must be owned. A product sold and installed as its own game is packaged differently from content associated with a base game. Verify the actual store listing rather than assuming from a trailer or subtitle.
- List what is new. A full release usually has its own game identity and broad scope. An expansion or DLC package is normally described through added areas, levels, characters, missions, systems, or other content.
- Separate “standalone” from “sequel.” Standalone playability answers whether the game works without another installation; sequel status answers where it sits in a series.
These clues reinforce one another, but none is an infallible industry rule. If the wording conflicts, attribute the label and explain the dependency and scope instead of forcing a single category.
What “new game” means in an announcement
“New game” is a broad release description rather than a precise relationship category. A publisher may use “new full game” to distinguish a complete product from an expansion, an update, or downloadable add-on. The phrase does not by itself tell you whether the game is an original property, a reboot, a remake, or a sequel.

Signs of a separately released full game
- The announcement gives the product its own game title, release date, store listing, and pricing.
- The publisher describes it as a complete game or a mainline entry rather than as content for another game.
- The product has its own installation or app identity on the platform.
- The announcement discusses a broad experience—such as a campaign, world, or systems—as the product itself, not as additions to a named base game.
A full game can still continue an earlier story or belong to an established franchise. “New” describes the release being announced; it does not mean “unrelated to everything that came before.”
What makes a game a sequel?
A sequel is defined by its relationship to an earlier game. The clearest evidence is explicit publisher language: “sequel,” “direct sequel,” “second game,” “third entry,” “numbered installment,” or “new mainline entry.” Numbering and a stated place in a series are stronger evidence than a familiar logo or subtitle alone.
Evidence that supports sequel status
- The publisher directly calls the product a sequel or direct sequel.
- The announcement identifies it as a numbered or mainline installment.
- The publisher explains that it continues a series, project, or story in a new game.
- The product is announced as a complete game rather than as content attached to a base-game listing.
A subtitle is weaker evidence. A game can share characters, a setting, or a brand with an earlier release without being formally presented as a sequel. Conversely, a sequel may use a subtitle and no number. Use the publisher’s description and the release relationship together.

Example: an explicit sequel label
In its December 12, 2025 announcement, Bandai Namco Entertainment America called ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE the “First ACE COMBAT Sequel in Seven Years” and described it as the first mainline entry in seven years. That “seven years” figure applies to this franchise interval and this announcement; it is not a general measure of how long sequels take.
What an expansion is
An expansion adds substantial new material to an existing game. The announcement normally names the base game and describes what is being added: new regions, missions, characters, campaigns, mechanics, or systems. An expansion can be large and expensive, but its defining relationship is that it extends a particular game rather than replacing it as a separate mainline release.
Clues that point to an expansion
- The publisher calls it an “expansion,” “expansion pack,” or similar add-on.
- The announcement repeatedly names a base game that players already own or install.
- The content is described as additional maps, levels, characters, missions, stories, or systems.
- The store page associates the product with the base game and states any ownership requirement.
“Expansion” is about product scope and relationship, not a guarantee of size. Some expansions add only a focused set of missions; others add a campaign, a new region, or systems that significantly change the base experience.

What DLC means—and why it is not simply “small content”
DLC means downloadable content. It is primarily a distribution and product category, not a reliable synonym for “minor.” Steamworks documentation lists expansions, new maps or levels, and additional characters as examples of DLC. Its implementation associates DLC with a base game, and the documentation states: “Once owned, downloadable content is treated as an integral part of the game.”

That is Steam’s platform model and example set, not a universal definition used identically by every publisher or storefront.
How DLC and expansion overlap
An expansion can be delivered as DLC, and a DLC item can be much smaller than an expansion. A season of content, character pack, cosmetic bundle, soundtrack, artbook, or map pack may all be labeled DLC on a particular platform. When writing about an announcement, preserve both dimensions:
- Content relationship: Is it an expansion of the base game, a map pack, characters, or another add-on?
- Delivery method: Is it downloaded through the base-game listing or installed as a separate product?
Do not infer scope from the three letters “DLC.” Read the item description and ownership requirement.
Standalone does not mean “not a sequel”
“Standalone” usually describes playability or packaging: the product can be installed and experienced without another game being required. “Sequel” describes its place in a series. Those statements can both be true.

How to report both facts accurately
Use a two-part description: “The publisher calls it a standalone game and identifies it as the second installment in the project.” Avoid rewriting “standalone” as “original,” “unrelated,” or “not a sequel.” Those are different claims.
A complete base game can still receive expansions
A product does not have to be incomplete or live-service in order to receive later add-ons. In an Xbox Wire developer feature about Serious Sam: Shatterverse, the team said: “We also wanted Shatterverse to launch as a complete, appropriately priced standalone game, one that was worth players’ money from the get-go and didn’t need live-service releases to be fun.” The same feature discusses potential expansions, DLC, and other content that could grow the base experience.
The practical lesson is to separate the launch product from its future roadmap. “Complete standalone game” describes what is sold at launch; possible expansions describe later additions. One does not cancel the other.
One announcement can contain all three categories
Paradox Interactive’s March 6, 2023 announcement is useful because it applies different labels within one portfolio. It grouped announcements into “three new full games,” “three expansions,” and other announcements. The company called Cities: Skylines II a sequel and a “direct sequel.” In the same announcement, it called Across the Obelisk: The Wolf Wars an expansion and described Crusader Kings III: Tours and Tournaments in terms of new actions and adventures.
This side-by-side wording shows why the announcement’s own nouns matter. The publisher used “full game” and “sequel” for a separately presented release, while “expansion” and added activities described products extending an existing game.

| Axis | Points toward a new game or sequel | Points toward an expansion or DLC |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher’s label | “New full game,” “sequel,” “direct sequel,” numbered or mainline entry | “Expansion,” “DLC,” add-on, content pack |
| Relationship to an earlier release | Continues a series or story as a separately announced game | Adds content to a specifically named base game |
| Product scope | Described as a complete game with its own identity | Described as added maps, levels, characters, missions, or systems |
| Dependency and packaging | Announced or sold as a game in its own right; it may still be a sequel | Often associated with or requiring the base game; verify the platform listing |
| Standalone status | May be standalone and still be a sequel or series installment | A separately playable “standalone expansion” can blur the simple distinction |
If the evidence points in different directions, report each confirmed fact. For example: “The publisher calls it a standalone expansion; the store listing says the base game is required.” That is more useful than choosing one label and hiding the qualification.
How to check a store listing without guessing
- Open the product’s own page. Confirm whether the page is for a game, an add-on, a bundle, or a supplement.
- Read the ownership requirement. Look for language saying that the base game is required, recommended, or included.
- Check installation behavior. Determine whether the platform installs a separate game or attaches content to an existing game entry.
- Inspect the description. Note whether the copy says “new game” or instead lists added maps, characters, missions, or systems.
- Compare editions carefully. A complete edition may bundle a base game and expansions; that bundle name does not change each component’s original category.
Platform behavior can differ. Steam’s app structure is a useful example of one platform’s implementation, but it should not be presented as an industry-wide rule for every storefront.
Common borderline cases
Remakes and reimaginings
A remake may be a new full game without being a sequel. If the publisher calls it a remake or identifies it as part of a remake project, use that wording. Do not infer sequel status merely because the game follows an older release chronologically.
Large story add-ons
A story expansion can be as substantial as a small game, yet remain an expansion if it extends a named base game and is sold as add-on content. Scope alone does not turn it into a sequel.
Standalone expansions
Some publishers use “standalone expansion” for an add-on that can be played without owning the original. Preserve both terms: standalone describes access, while expansion describes the product’s relationship or design lineage.

Numbered side projects
A number can suggest a mainline sequel, but numbering should be paired with the publisher’s explanation. A numbered release may be a remake project, spin-off, or collection component depending on the announcement.
Best Value
Seasonal and live-service content
New missions, characters, maps, or systems released inside an ongoing game are generally discussed as DLC or updates when the publisher attaches them to that base game. Use the publisher’s label and state whether the content is optional, included, or requires ownership of the base product.
What not to infer from a title or trailer
- A familiar franchise name is not proof of a sequel. It may identify a remake, reboot, spin-off, expansion, or collection.
- A subtitle is not proof of an expansion. Full games frequently use subtitles.
- Standalone is not proof of originality. It can coexist with sequel or installment status.
- Downloadable is not proof of small scope. DLC can include major expansions.
- A large price is not proof of a full game. Pricing varies by publisher, region, edition, and platform.
- A separate download is not conclusive. Some platforms package add-ons separately even when they require a base game.
A writing formula for clear coverage
When you are explaining an announcement to readers, use this order:
- Attribute the label: “The publisher calls it a direct sequel,” or “The announcement describes it as an expansion.”
- Name the base relationship: Identify the earlier game or project and state whether the new product continues it or adds to it.
- Describe the content: List the new campaign, areas, missions, characters, or systems actually mentioned.
- State the dependency: Say whether the base game is required, included, or not needed according to the platform listing.
- Handle mixed wording explicitly: If it is called standalone and a sequel, explain that standalone refers to playability while sequel refers to series position.
A concise example would be: “The publisher presents this as a standalone game and the second entry in a three-part project. It is therefore both independently playable and a sequel in the project’s structure.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why there is no universal checklist
Publishers use commercial, technical, and descriptive labels for different purposes. “DLC” may describe how a platform delivers content; “expansion” may describe the design relationship; “standalone” may describe whether another installation is needed; and “sequel” may describe series continuity. A single product can satisfy more than one description.
The official examples establish how particular publishers and Steam document these terms, but they do not create one definition binding every studio, platform, or region. When an announcement is ambiguous, the accurate answer is qualified rather than absolute: quote or attribute the label, describe what the product depends on, and avoid claiming that a marketing term settles every technical detail.
Decision checklist
- What exact noun does the publisher use?
- Is an earlier game or base product named?
- Is this sold as a complete game, an expansion, DLC, a bundle, or a supplement?
- Does the product have its own game identity and installation?
- What content is new?
- Is ownership of another game required?
- Does “standalone” refer to playability rather than series position?
- Are you attributing the claim to the publisher or presenting an interpretation?
- Have you avoided turning one platform’s implementation into a universal rule?
The Bottom Line
Classify the announcement by combining the publisher’s explicit label with the product’s relationship to an existing game. A separately released game can be a sequel and still be standalone; an expansion or DLC adds content to a named base game, and DLC is not a dependable measure of size. When terms overlap, state each confirmed fact and keep the publisher’s qualification.
