A gadget discount is good value only when the exact item’s total price is competitive and the seller’s terms work for you. Check the model, recent price history, delivered cost, condition, returns and warranty; treat the advertised saving as a claim to verify, not proof of a bargain.
Start with the exact gadget, not the discount label
Write down the manufacturer, model number and configuration you want before comparing offers. Storage capacity, connectivity, included accessories and product condition can all change the price. A different configuration—or a refurbished unit beside a new one—is not a like-for-like comparison.

Check whether the sale price is genuinely lower
A crossed-out “was” price or a large percentage off does not tell you whether today’s price is competitive. Check the gadget’s price history, if available, and compare the current amount with other sellers. A price-history tool or alert can help show whether the item regularly sells for less than the displayed reference price. The European Consumer Centre also recommends checking what a reference price means and comparing prices across retailers and the manufacturer’s site: European Consumer Centre guidance on price reductions.
Use the recent pattern and comparable offers as context, not as a guarantee that a particular price is the lowest you will see. A genuine reduction can still be poor value if another seller offers the same item for less or the deal’s conditions add costs.
Compare the full cost and conditions
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the headline price. The FTC advises including shipping, handling, delivery, taxes and other fees. Its advice also points shoppers to deal terms and fine print: FTC online-shopping guidance.

- Check shipping and delivery charges, taxes and handling fees.
- Look for requirements such as a subscription, trade-in, bundle or other qualifying condition.
- Confirm whether the advertised price applies to the configuration you selected and whether any add-on is required.
If the seller does not make the final price or conditions clear, you cannot make a reliable comparison yet.

Read the complete product description for terms such as “refurbished,” “open box” or “close-out.” A lower price may reflect a different condition or sales arrangement rather than a discount on a new, equivalent gadget. Confirm who is selling the item, who handles delivery and returns, and what refund terms apply. Keep the order confirmation and other purchase records.

The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends checking seller information, product details and return policies before buying: FTC online-shopping guidance. If a deal depends on a seller or return policy you are not comfortable with, the discount may not compensate for that risk.
Judge warranty coverage by what it adds
Before paying extra for a service contract or extended warranty, compare its coverage with the warranty included with the gadget. Check what is covered, who is responsible for providing the coverage and whether the extra plan fills a gap you actually care about. Reference-price rules depend on where you shop
Rules for advertised discounts vary by jurisdiction. The EU has a specific reference-price basis; it should not be assumed to apply everywhere. In the UK, advertising guidance focuses on whether a claimed usual price is genuine and supported by evidence. In the U.S., the FTC’s cited online-shopping advice emphasizes practical checks such as product identity, total cost and deal terms rather than establishing an EU-style 30-day convention.

The European Commission says that discounts must be based on the lowest price applied during the previous 30 days. In a 2026 report on a coordinated sweep of 314 online traders, the Commission found that 30% referenced discounts incorrectly and that 60% of traders displaying price comparisons did not clearly explain where the reference prices came from. The European Consumer Centre describes the EU crossed-out-price basis as the lowest price applied on that website during the previous 30 days and notes that successive discounts have particular reference-price treatment. Check the explanation attached to the offer rather than assuming a crossed-out figure represents the seller’s normal price.
United Kingdom
ASA/CAP guidance says an advertised reference price must represent a genuine, established usual selling price. Relevant evidence includes how recent and long-standing that price is, the seller’s price history and sales data, and the sales channels used. Regular fluctuations or repeated discounting can undermine the claim that a higher figure is the usual price: ASA/CAP guidance on price promotions.
United States
Do not apply the EU’s 30-day convention as a general U.S. rule. For practical online-shopping checks, use the FTC’s advice on identifying the exact item, calculating total cost, reviewing seller terms and using price alerts: FTC online-shopping guidance.
Use a simple decision check before buying
- Match the item: verify the model, configuration and condition.
- Check the price: compare current offers and, where possible, recent price history—not only the displayed “was” amount.
- Calculate the total: include delivery, taxes, fees and any required conditions.
- Review the seller and remedy: understand who sells and ships the item, what returns are allowed and how warranty claims work.
- Decide against your needs: buy only if the full price and terms meet your own target, even if the advertised percentage off looks impressive.
A smaller advertised discount can be the better offer when it is the same gadget, costs less overall and comes with clearer terms.
