Arrange service rather than attempting a home repair if your foldable phone no longer opens or closes normally, the hinge or screen is visibly damaged, or the device is malfunctioning. Official guidance does not set one universal “bad angle” or movement threshold for every foldable. The practical test is whether the phone’s behavior has materially changed or there is visible damage.
Before closing the phone, check for a loose object between the halves. Do not force the hinge, insert anything into it, blow debris deeper inside, remove a factory-installed screen protector, or follow generic disassembly instructions. Identify the exact model and region, back up your data, and use the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.

When a hinge problem should be treated as a repair issue
Foldable hinges differ by model, so there is no reliable, brand-wide measurement such as a particular number of degrees of looseness that proves a failure. Google’s Pixel Fold guidance instead directs owners to support when a device is damaged or not working properly. Apply that principle to any foldable: a meaningful change from its normal opening or closing behavior is more important than an internet checklist of angles or sounds.
Changed opening or closing behavior
Stop normal use and arrange an assessment when the phone no longer opens or closes as it did when new. Examples include a half that will not meet the other half, a fold that stops at an unfamiliar position, or resistance that makes ordinary movement materially different. Do not keep cycling the hinge to “test” it. A qualified technician can determine whether the cause is an obstruction, hinge damage, frame damage, or a display problem.

Visible hinge, frame, or screen damage
A crack, dent, lifted edge, torn flexible display area, or other visible damage is a service trigger, particularly after a drop, impact, or liquid exposure. Google advises contacting customer service for a damaged device, and its guidance warns that improper repair or disassembly can cause additional damage and may affect water resistance.
Malfunctioning phone
Repair is also appropriate when the phone is malfunctioning, even if the hinge looks intact. A foldable display that stops responding, shows damage, or behaves abnormally should be evaluated with the hinge and display as one assembly rather than treated with a generic cleaning or protector kit.
A safe triage procedure
Use this sequence to decide what to do without turning a minor obstruction into a damaged display or hinge.
- Stop forceful movement. Hold the phone securely and do not push past resistance or press the two halves together to make them close.
- Remove accessories that can interfere. Take off a case or accessory only if it can be removed without bending the phone. Do not use a case edge or card as a probe.
- Look at the gap and hinge from the outside. Check for a loose card, coin, key, grit, or other object between the halves. Motorola’s foldable device guide warns that such objects can damage the screen or prevent proper closure.
- Check the foldable display before closing. Google instructs Pixel Fold owners to ensure that no objects or fine particles such as sand or dirt are on the display or in the hinge when closing it. Use the instruction as a safety check, not as permission to insert a tool or dismantle the hinge.
- Do only a gentle movement check. If nothing obvious is loose, stop trying to diagnose the internal mechanism. A hinge that still opens or closes differently should be referred to support.
- Record what happened. Note the model, when the change began, any drop or liquid contact, whether the screen is cracked or malfunctioning, and whether the phone can still close without pressure. These details help the service team assess the claim.
- Back up important data. Google notes that repair or replacement can result in loss of user data. Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other irreplaceable files before shipping or handing over the phone, where the device remains usable.
- Find model- and region-specific support. Use the exact model name, country, purchase information, and warranty or insurance details. Repair processes and eligibility are not interchangeable between generations or markets.
How to distinguish a loose obstruction from a likely hardware fault
What an obstruction can look like
A card, coin, key, grit, or another object trapped between the halves can prevent normal closure. Motorola specifically identifies these kinds of objects as capable of damaging the screen or stopping the hinge from closing correctly. A loose object that is plainly visible at the edge may be removed only by hand, without a sharp or rigid implement and without flexing the phone.

When an obstruction is not a do-it-yourself cleaning job
Fine particles can enter the hinge or contact the flexible display. Google warns that particles such as sand or dirt can damage those components. Do not probe the hinge, scrape at it, blow debris farther inside, flood it with liquid, or follow a generic “hinge cleaning” video intended for another model. If the object is not clearly loose and accessible, stop and request professional service.
Why repeated testing can make matters worse
Every additional forced closing can transfer pressure to the flexible display and hinge. The official guidance favors preventing contamination and obtaining professional help over experimenting with tools or disassembly. A phone that closes only when pressed should be left in the least stressful position and kept away from pockets or bags where another object could enter the gap.
What a crease does—and does not—tell you
The official material available for Pixel Fold and Motorola foldables does not define a universal appearance for a normal crease across all models. A visible crease by itself therefore cannot establish that a hinge needs replacement. Treat it as a service concern when it is changing, accompanied by a crack or other visible damage, or associated with impaired opening, closing, touch response, or another malfunction.

Screen-protector rules are model-specific
Pixel Fold
Google says not to remove the preinstalled Pixel Fold screen protector and not to apply a third-party protector. If the protector is lifting, bubbling, scratched, or damaged, ask Pixel support for the approved service path instead of peeling it away at home.
Motorola foldables
Motorola says its foldable protector should be replaced by suitably competent people using approved repair guidance or by Motorola-approved personnel. That is not an authorization to transfer the same procedure to another brand or model.
Why a protector cannot repair a hinge
A screen protector may cover a display surface; it cannot realign a hinge, remove contamination inside the mechanism, or correct frame damage. A replacement protector should be considered only after the manufacturer or qualified provider has identified the actual fault and specified the approved part and procedure.
Red flags that mean you should stop using the phone and arrange service
- The hinge, frame, or flexible display is visibly cracked, dented, torn, or separated.
- The phone has been dropped, struck, or exposed to liquid and now behaves differently.
- Opening or closing requires unusual pressure, no longer reaches its normal position, or has materially changed from its previous behavior.
- The screen is cracked, unresponsive, flickering, or otherwise malfunctioning.
- The phone cannot close because something is caught inside and the item is not plainly removable by hand.
- You are considering a tool, solvent, heat, adhesive, protector removal, or disassembly to make the hinge move.
These signs do not identify the failed part; they identify a situation in which continued experimentation risks more damage. Google’s Pixel Fold instructions recommend support or professional repair for a damaged or malfunctioning device.

Motorola’s repair options information says difficulty varies by model and damage and cautions that self-repair may affect warranty. The cited sources provide no universal repair price or turnaround time, so insist on a device-specific quote rather than relying on a generic hinge price.
Warranty, insurance, and regional limits
Warranty coverage is case-specific. Check the terms for the exact phone, country, purchase date, and documented damage. Motorola’s US warranty terms list certain accident, impact, liquid, and contamination damage among exclusions, subject to the product terms. That US language does not decide a claim for another manufacturer, country, or model.
Before authorizing paid work, ask whether the provider will inspect the phone first, whether a replacement device may be supplied instead of a hinge repair, and whether the quoted amount includes display or frame components. Keep receipts, service records, and photographs of the phone’s condition.

Neither manufacturer’s instructions should be presented as a universal repair manual for every foldable. The model, generation, region, and damage history determine the correct procedure.
The practical rule
A foldable hinge needs professional attention when its normal movement changes, visible damage appears, the phone malfunctions, or an obstruction cannot be removed safely without tools. If the only observation is an unchanged crease on an otherwise functioning phone, the cited guidance does not establish a failure; ask the manufacturer whether that appearance is normal for your exact model. In every uncertain case, protect the display from pressure, back up your data, and obtain a model-specific service assessment instead of forcing, probing, or dismantling the hinge.
