You usually cannot prove generative-AI use by examining an actor’s face or listening to a line. A strange blink, perfect skin, lip-sync mismatch or synthetic-sounding voice may justify further checking, but the available evidence does not establish a dependable visual checklist or consumer detector. Reliable answers come from production notes, credits, press statements or a provenance declaration that identifies the exact released version. A missing declaration is not proof that no AI was used.
What a viewer can establish—and what they cannot
Generative AI can affect a performance in several different ways. A system might retouch a performance that was recorded in full, generate a new voice for an identifiable actor, create an entirely synthetic performer, or be used only during development while no generated material reaches the finished cut. Those cases look similar on a screen but have different classifications.

The practical answer is therefore a documentation question rather than a face-reading exercise. Start by asking whether the finished version contains AI-generated performance material. Then ask whether the system merely processed human-created material or fabricated content that was never captured. Finally, check whether the production has disclosed that use for the version you are watching.
- Appearance and sound: useful as prompts to investigate, not confirmation.
- Production records: the strongest evidence available to an ordinary viewer.
- Version-specific provenance: essential because a theatrical, broadcast, streaming or later remastered version can differ.
Human Provenance in Film’s taxonomy (version 0.9.3) puts the distinction this way: “Classification turns on this distinction, not on whether the software technically synthesised pixels, frames or audio, and not on the label a vendor applies.”

Why visual or audio clues are not a reliable test
Viewers often look for waxy skin, irregular teeth, changing eye reflections, drifting hair, unstable hands, a voice without natural breaths, or mouth movements that do not quite match speech. Such artifacts can occur in generated material, but they can also result from ordinary visual effects, aggressive compression, ADR, dubbing, motion blur, frame interpolation, makeup, lighting, a deliberately stylized performance or a poor stream. A clean image does not rule AI out, either.
The reviewed standards and guidance do not validate any of these observations as a dependable consumer test. There is no established checklist that lets a viewer identify a synthetic performance from a paused frame, and no cited detector that can certify a film or episode solely from its playback. Treat an uncanny detail as a reason to seek records, not as a verdict.
Audio deserves the same caution. Voice cloning can be mixed, equalized and edited until obvious artifacts disappear; conventional dubbing can sound artificial even when a human actor recorded every line. A generated voice may also be used for a brief replacement while the visible performance remains a captured human performance. Listening can tell you that something merits investigation, but not what process produced it.

The Human Provenance in Film reconstruction test asks whether the material already existed in a captured human performance. Restoration or repair of content that was recorded is assistive. Fabrication of content that was never captured is generative. If a tool performs both tasks, the fabricated component determines the category.
| What appears in the released work | Taxonomy category | Descriptors that may apply | What the category tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| A performer’s complete, recorded performance is cosmetically de-aged or cleaned up. | Assistive AI | Altered performance | AI processed captured material; it did not originate a new performance from nothing. |
| AI-generated speech representing an identifiable actor is inserted into footage of that actor’s captured performance. | Generative AI | Digital replica; generated voice; altered performance | New vocal content was fabricated and represents a specific person. |
| A wholly generated performer who does not represent an identifiable person appears on screen. | Generative AI | Synthetic performance | The performance itself was generated rather than captured from an identifiable actor. |
| A wholly generated fictional narrator supplies the spoken track. | Generative AI | Synthetic performance; generated voice | Both the voice and the represented performance are synthetic. |
| AI is used for brainstorming, previs or tests, but no AI output remains in the distributed cut. | Outside the finished-work record | Development-only use | Workflow use alone does not establish that the released performance contains AI output. |
“Digital replica” means a representation of an identifiable person. “Synthetic performance” means a wholly generated performance that does not represent an identifiable person. “Generated voice” describes the modality; it does not by itself settle questions about consent, contracts or legal rights. These provenance terms classify what is present in the finished work, not whether the production obtained permission.

A step-by-step evidence trail for viewers
- Identify the exact version. Record the title, episode, cut or edition, platform, territory and date you watched it. A festival print, theatrical release, broadcast master and later streaming version may not contain the same material.
- Read the end credits. Look for visual-effects, facial-replacement, voice, digital-replica, synthetic-performance or artificial-intelligence disclosures. Capture the wording and time stamp if the credits are available only briefly.
- Check official production notes and press materials. Studios, distributors and producers sometimes describe de-aging, voice generation, replacement shots or other alterations. Confirm that the statement concerns the finished title rather than an experiment or an abandoned scene.
- Look for a formal provenance declaration. Human Provenance in Film provides a structured declaration for producers. A declaration should identify what AI output appears and the named version to which it applies.
- Separate output from workflow. A statement that a team used AI during development does not prove that generated performance content reached the final cut. Conversely, a statement about a generated voice in one scene is evidence of output even if most of the production was conventional.
- Compare the declaration with what you watched. Check episode numbers, runtime, language track and edition. A declaration for a trailer, alternate dub or earlier cut cannot automatically be applied to the version in your player.
- Contact the rights holder only when the record is genuinely important. Ask a specific question—whether the named version contains generated performance content, and which scenes or modalities are involved—rather than asking whether “AI was used” in the broadest sense.
Keep copies of the statement, credit screen or response with the version details. That prevents a later re-release from being mistaken for the material you originally checked.
How to interpret declarations and silence
A positive declaration tied to the watched version is the clearest public evidence a viewer can obtain. It should describe the output in the work, not merely advertise an experimental production pipeline. The taxonomy is designed around the named finished version as distributed or exhibited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSilence has a narrower meaning. Human Provenance in Film explicitly says that a missing declaration is never the same as a “No AI Used” declaration. Each receiving organization decides whether to request, retain or display a declaration, so the absence of a label may reflect policy, timing or incomplete records rather than a verified absence of AI.
Do not convert an unconfirmed suspicion into a factual claim. Use precise language such as “No public declaration was found for the streaming version watched on [date]” (show the date only inside a record or note, not as proof of non-use). If a producer later publishes a version-specific statement, update your conclusion.
Comparing two performances without overclaiming
When two scenes or titles raise the same question, compare evidence rather than visual impressions. The following framework keeps the categories separate.

| Question | Case A | Case B | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Was new performance content fabricated? | Yes, no, or not established | Yes, no, or not established | Fabrication is the line between assistive processing and generative output. |
| Does the representation identify a real person? | Identifiable actor or fictional individual | Identifiable actor or fictional individual | Identifiable people are described as digital replicas; wholly fictional performers are synthetic performances. |
| Which modality is involved? | Face, voice, body, text, or combination | Face, voice, body, text, or combination | A generated voice can be present even when the image is an unaltered recording. |
| Is there a declaration for the version watched? | Credit, statement, provenance record, or none found | Credit, statement, provenance record, or none found | Evidence must attach to the distributed or exhibited version, not a different cut. |
This comparison can produce a careful conclusion—such as “declared generative voice representing an identifiable actor”—without claiming that every digital effect in the title used the same method.

Digital replicas, synthetic performers and labor agreements
Provenance vocabulary and labor-contract vocabulary overlap but are not interchangeable. A provenance label describes what appears in the finished work. A collective-bargaining agreement can impose requirements about consent, negotiation, compensation or permitted uses.
SAG-AFTRA’s 2026 TV/Theatrical FAQ states: “Producers are not permitted to use synthetics without first bargaining with SAG-AFTRA.” The agreement also expresses a principle favoring human performance and says a synthetic is not intended to be used in a human role otherwise performed by a human unless it brings “significant additional value” to the motion picture. Those terms apply within the agreement’s defined coverage; they should not be generalized to every country, production, performer or type of contract.
SAG-AFTRA’s 2023 FAQ distinguishes a wholly synthetic performer from a digital replica. Under that 2023 framework, a synthetic performer is not based on an actual performer; if the result resembles an actual performer, digital-replica provisions apply. The 2026 TV/Theatrical page is the more current reference for the covered agreement’s status. Neither FAQ lets a viewer infer that a particular title complied; only title-specific records or statements can answer that.
Advertising disclosures are not a general film-labeling rule
California’s September 16, 2026 announcement about SB 1050 says the law requires explicit disclosure on video or audio advertisements that use AI-generated performers to sell a product or service. Governor Gavin Newsom described the policy this way: “Californians deserve to know when the person selling them something isn’t a person at all.”

That announcement concerns advertising. It is not evidence that every film or television program must carry a general AI label, and it does not settle obligations in another jurisdiction or medium. The enacted text, effective date and applicable territory should be checked before relying on the rule for legal advice. A commercial that promotes a show may therefore have a disclosure obligation even when the program itself is governed by different rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What audiences say they want to know
Survey results explain why provenance matters, but they do not identify whether any particular performance is synthetic. Baringa reported in 2025 that 77% of respondents wanted to know whether content had been created by AI, in whole or in part. The same report said 31% would not be happy consuming content without knowing whether AI was used and another 41% would have reservations. These are survey responses, not a universal measure of every audience.
Deloitte reported in 2024 that 70% of its respondents would rather watch a television show or movie written by a human than one written by generative AI. In that survey, 42% felt humans and generative AI could each deliver entertaining content, while 22% felt generative AI could write more interesting shows or movies. The figures describe stated preferences within Deloitte’s survey frame; they are not a detector and do not show how viewers can identify a specific scene.
A practical confidence scale for your notes
Use a simple evidence scale so that your wording matches what you actually know.
- Confirmed: an official credit, production statement or provenance declaration identifies AI-generated performance output in the exact version watched.
- Documented processing: an official source describes restoration, repair or cosmetic alteration of captured material, with no claim that new performance content was fabricated.
- Indicated but incomplete: a credible statement identifies AI use but does not specify the scene, modality or edition. Report the limitation instead of assigning a broader category.
- Unresolved: only visual or audio impressions are available, or no public record can be found. Do not call the performance AI-generated.
For an unresolved case, preserve the title, version, time stamp and observations, then continue looking for an official record. Describing the evidence trail is more useful than asserting certainty that the available evidence cannot support.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling every digital effect “generative AI”
Digital compositing, motion capture cleanup, de-aging and repair can involve software without fabricating a new performance. Ask whether material that was never captured was created. If not, the taxonomy treats restoration or repair as assistive.
Assuming a famous actor’s likeness proves a digital replica
A resemblance may come from the actor’s own recorded performance, makeup, prosthetics or conventional effects. “Digital replica” is appropriate only when the finished output represents an identifiable person through generated material.
Treating a missing label as evidence of non-use
Silence is not a “No AI Used” declaration. State that no public declaration was found for the version and date you checked.

SAG-AFTRA terms apply within their defined coverage, and California’s SB 1050 announcement addresses advertising. Neither establishes a worldwide rule for film and television labeling.
Confusing development tools with released content
Previsualization, brainstorming or tests may use AI without leaving generated output in the distributed cut. Classify what viewers receive, not every tool used during production.
What a responsible explanation sounds like
A strong viewer-facing explanation names the evidence and its boundary: “The end credits for the streaming version identify an AI-generated voice representing the lead actor in the final scene; the declaration does not describe facial alteration.” Or: “The production notes describe cosmetic de-aging of recorded footage, which fits assistive processing; no source reviewed identifies generated speech.” If no documentation exists, say so plainly and leave the result unresolved.
This approach answers the question without pretending that visual intuition is a forensic method. It also remains useful when a title changes between releases, when only one language track contains generated audio, or when a labor agreement and a provenance label describe different aspects of the same production.
