How to Tell Whether a Company’s Social Media Account Has Been Hacked

Look for activity the company did not authorize: changed login or recovery details, unfamiliar sessions, unknown administrators or connected apps, posts or messages the business did not send, or a sudden loss of access. These are warning signs, not proof of how an intruder got in. Check the account’s own security settings, secure any access that remains, and use the platform’s official recovery process if the team is locked out.

Signs a company social media account may be compromised

One clue can have an innocent explanation, such as a staff member signing in from a new device. Treat unexpected activity as a reason to verify it with the authorized team and the platform’s records—not as a standalone forensic diagnosis.

Login, password, or recovery details changed

An unexpected password reset or a change to the account’s email address, phone number, or username is a strong reason to investigate. The FTC lists unexpected account-detail changes and inability to sign in among common signs of a hacked account: How To Recover Your Hacked Email or Social Media Account and Email or social media hacked? Here’s what to do.

Unfamiliar logins or active sessions

Take an alert about a login from a device or location the team does not recognize seriously, then check the service’s own session or login-activity screen. Meta provides login alerts and a “Where You’re Logged In” area; X says it may alert users about suspicious or first-time device logins and advises changing the password if the activity was not theirs. Location estimates and alerts are clues to check, not conclusive identification of the person who signed in. See Meta’s account security guidance and X’s account security tips.

Posts, messages, or profile edits the company did not make

Unexpected posts, direct messages, or profile changes may indicate that someone is using the account. Customer reports that the company sent unusual messages can reveal activity the internal team has not yet noticed. The FTC includes messages sent to contacts without the owner’s knowledge among the warning signs in its guidance on hacked email and social accounts.

Unknown administrators, app access, or permission changes

For a business account, check more than the public profile. An unfamiliar administrator, connected application, or change in who can manage the account may expose it even if the visible posts look normal. CISA recommends monitoring for unauthorized logons and permission changes as part of social media account protection.

The team is suddenly locked out

Being unable to sign in is a warning sign, especially if it coincides with changed recovery details or reports of unauthorized content. It does not identify the cause by itself; proceed through the platform’s official hacked-account recovery process rather than relying on an unofficial recovery service.

How to verify suspicious activity

  1. Open the service directly. Use the platform’s app or type its address yourself. Do not use an unexpected message’s link to “verify” or restore the account.
  2. Review login and session activity. Look for unfamiliar devices or sessions in the platform’s security settings. Compare the times with staff schedules and ask authorized account users whether they recognize the activity.
  3. Check account details and business access. Confirm the recovery email and phone number, account roles, business-management access, and connected apps. Remove access the business cannot identify or justify.
  4. Check what customers may have seen. Review recent posts and messages for material the company did not approve, and record affected content and approximate times for the internal response.
  5. Use the service’s official help pages if anything remains unexplained. Settings and recovery steps vary by platform and can change, so follow the instructions for that specific service.

A legitimate employee may explain an unfamiliar login or change. Establish whether the activity was authorized, but do not delay securing access while an unexplained change remains active.

What to do if the account is still accessible

  1. Change the password to a strong, unique one that is not used for another service.
  2. Sign out other sessions using the platform’s session or device controls.
  3. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if the service offers it, and confirm that the recovery email and phone number belong to the business.
  4. Remove unknown access. Review connected apps, administrators, staff roles, and business permissions; revoke access that is not recognized or no longer needed.
  5. Check the devices used to manage the account. If malware may have been installed, update the device’s security software and run a scan. Meta’s business-malware guidance also recommends current antivirus software, 2FA, unique passwords, login alerts, and session review: How We Protect Businesses From Malware.
  6. Address unauthorized messages or posts. Notify contacts who may have received suspicious messages through a verified channel the company still controls, and keep the explanation factual.
  7. Keep monitoring account activity. Watch for new sessions, permission changes, administrator additions, or other activity the business did not authorize.

What to do if the company is locked out

Use the platform’s official recovery flow for hacked or inaccessible accounts. The FTC’s recovery guide links to recovery entry points for major services. Once access is restored, review recovery details, sessions, connected apps, and business roles, then secure the account and the devices used to manage it. Avoid third parties that promise recovery through unofficial channels.

Check the business systems behind the public account

Company social accounts may be controlled through employee logins, delegated administrators, connected apps, and business-management tools. Review both the public-facing account and the people or business assets with permission to manage it. Confirm which staff still need access, remove unknown access, and alert the responsible internal administrator or security team. Meta notes that business exposure can begin with compromise of a personal account used to reach business tools; CISA recommends organizational policies and monitoring for unusual social-account activity.
