Stop replying or talking, then verify the claim through a channel you initiate: open your bank’s official app, type its known website address yourself, or call the number on your card or a recent statement. Don’t click the message’s link, call a number the sender gives you, share a password or one-time code, or move money to “protect” it. An incoming text or call cannot prove its own identity.
What to do first
- End the incoming interaction. If it’s a call, ask which bank and what issue the caller claims to have, then hang up. If it’s a text, stop replying. Don’t let the caller keep you on the line or direct how you check the claim.
- Contact the bank independently. Use the official app already installed on your device, type the bank’s known website address yourself, or call the number printed on your card or a recent statement. For a text alert, open the app or call rather than following the message’s instructions.
- Ask whether the claim is real. Use the independently sourced channel to check the reported transaction, account problem, or requested action. Don’t call a number in the message or rely on caller ID. The FTC warns that scammers may buy search ads for fake contact numbers, so avoid choosing a sponsored result as your first source.
- Follow verified instructions only. If the bank confirms a real issue, handle it through the app or verified phone number. Never transfer funds to a “safe account” or destination supplied by the incoming contact.
Why caller ID, logos, and familiar details aren’t proof
Caller ID, text messages, emails, and even voices can be faked or impersonated. A familiar bank name, convincing logo, plausible voice, or accurate personal details does not authenticate the sender. The FDIC describes bank-impersonation messages that mimic security alerts and use urgency to prompt a quick response. Treat the contact as unverified until you check through the bank independently.

Warning signs in a bank text or call
- Urgency or pressure: The sender claims a suspicious purchase or account problem and demands an immediate response. A real issue is still something you can confirm through your bank’s app or verified number.
- Requests for sensitive details: Be wary of requests for your password, Social Security number, account or card details, or a verification code. The CFPB warns that requests to verify account details by email or text can be phishing attempts.
- A request to move money: A caller who tells you to withdraw cash, buy gift cards, use cryptocurrency, or transfer funds to keep your money safe is using a scam tactic. The CFPB says legitimate financial institutions do not ask people to send money to “protect it.”
- Secrecy or control: A caller who tells you not to hang up or not to tell anyone is trying to keep you from checking the story. The FTC says, “No legitimate fraud department will tell you to keep the call a secret.”
- Links, app installs, or remote access: Don’t click links in unexpected messages, install an app at the caller’s direction, or grant remote access to your device during an unsolicited fraud call.
Never give an incoming caller or texter a one-time code
A verification code can help someone access your account. The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Anyone who asks you for your account verification code is a scammer.” Don’t read or send a code to an incoming caller or texter, even if they claim they need it to stop fraud.

A code belongs only in your bank’s genuine sign-in or verification flow when you started that process yourself. If a caller asks you to retrieve a code or approve a sign-in, end the interaction and contact the bank through an independent channel.

What to do if you already replied, shared information, or moved money
- Stop communicating with the sender. Don’t continue the call or reply to further messages.
- Contact your bank promptly through a trusted channel. Explain what you shared or did, including whether you disclosed a code or moved money. Follow the bank’s directions through its verified app or number.
- Report the suspected scam. The FTC recommends reporting scams. The CFPB also identifies the FTC, FBI, your state attorney general, or local police as possible contacts. Find agency contact details through their genuine websites rather than links or numbers supplied by the sender.
How common is bank impersonation?
The FDIC’s consumer page, published in June 2025 and displaying a last-updated date of May 27, 2026, reports several figures attributed to FTC findings. The FTC found that bank impersonation was the most reported scam conducted through text messages in 2022, nearly twenty times the 2019 level. The FDIC also reports that consumers reported $12.5 billion in fraud losses in 2024 and that imposter scams were the second-highest category of reported losses. These figures describe reported scams and losses; they do not tell you whether a particular message is genuine.
The FDIC page also says the typical consumer loss among people who fell for the bank-impersonation scam it describes was $3,000; it does not state a separate year for that figure. The practical test for an individual text or call remains the same: verify the claim through a bank channel you sourced independently.
