A 9,000mAh rating suggests a large battery, but it cannot tell you how many hours—or days—a phone will last. To judge whether it will outlast your current phone, compare independent battery-test results for the activities you actually do, under similar conditions. Capacity is one clue; the phone’s hardware, display, software, settings, network and your usage all affect runtime.
Why 9,000mAh does not translate directly into hours
mAh measures a battery’s capacity, not the phone’s runtime in a particular person’s hands. Two phones with similar capacity can deliver different endurance because their displays, processors, software, features and background activity differ. Screen brightness, refresh rate, signal strength, temperature, battery age and time spent idle also matter. DXOMARK’s explanation of smartphone battery testing covers these influences: how DXOMARK tests the smartphone battery experience.

That is why you cannot reliably convert a capacity difference into a specific number of extra hours, or conclude that a 9,000mAh model will last a set number of days. You need results for the exact phone and a workload resembling your own.
Check the battery tests that match your routine
Battery life is not one task. Compare results for the activities that make up your day rather than relying on a single total or score.

- Browsing: Look for a web-browsing test if you spend much of the day reading, searching or using social apps.
- Video: Use playback or streaming results if watching video is a major part of your routine. A phone’s video result does not predict its gaming or navigation endurance.
- Gaming: Compare gaming tests if you play demanding games; performance and power use can differ substantially from lighter tasks.
- Calls and navigation: Check whether testing covers calls or navigation if these are important to you. Cellular use and location services may make those tasks unlike Wi-Fi browsing or video playback.
- Standby: Look for idle or overnight-drain information if the phone spends long stretches unused. Active-use results alone do not show how much charge it loses while standing by.
PhoneArena says its in-house suite tests browsing, video and gaming under controlled conditions. DXOMARK describes a home/office 24-hour activity cycle with four hours of screen-on time, as well as separate on-the-go tests. These are examples of test protocols, not promises about your own day.
Read the test conditions before comparing phones
A test result is most useful when the conditions are similar for both phones and close enough to your own use. Check the review’s methodology for:
- Brightness and display settings: A brighter screen or a different refresh-rate setting can change power use. PhoneArena states that its tests use fixed 200-nit brightness.
- Network: Wi-Fi-only results may not reflect a day spent on cellular data. PhoneArena says its tests use Wi-Fi; Samsung describes a methodology using defined tasks and a simulated network.
- Software and device condition: Firmware updates and battery health affect results. PhoneArena says it tests with the latest firmware available at test time and a battery in full health.
- Environment and signal: Temperature and cellular signal can affect real-world endurance. PhoneArena specifically warns that signal, temperature and battery aging affect results; Samsung also cautions that actual battery life varies with network and settings.
- Activity mix and idle time: A test with long active sessions may not resemble a day split between short checks, calls and standby. DXOMARK defines light, moderate and intense profiles as 2.5, 4 and 7 hours of active use per day, respectively; those are its test-profile definitions, not universal daily-use averages.
For context on how one manufacturer documents a test, see Samsung’s Battery Lifetime Test Procedure. Samsung’s support notice says, “The battery lifetime changes according to the device setting method and method of use.” Its methodology is not directly interchangeable with another reviewer’s test, so compare phones within the same test suite when possible.

Build a comparison from your own phone
- Record a representative day or two. On your current phone, note screen-on time and how much time goes to video, browsing, gaming, calls, camera use and navigation. Include overnight or other standby drain.
- Note how you use the phone. Record whether you are mostly on Wi-Fi or cellular, and your usual brightness and refresh-rate settings. These details help explain why your experience may differ from a review.
- Find results for both phones from the same tester. Prefer separate browsing, video, gaming and standby figures over a lone composite score. A shared protocol makes the comparison more meaningful.
- Match results to your most common tasks. If you mainly stream video, prioritize video results; if you game or navigate often, look for those workloads. Consider whether the test’s active-use and idle pattern resembles your day.
- Compare endurance, then assess trade-offs separately. Once you have a relevant runtime comparison, consider charging time and the phone’s size and weight as separate factors. Do not estimate extra hours by scaling the phones’ mAh figures.
What the vivo T5 Pro’s 9,020mAh figure tells you
As a concrete example, vivo India announced the T5 Pro with a 9,020mAh battery in 2026 and published claims of up to 12.6 hours of gaming and 37 hours of video playback. These are vivo’s manufacturer-stated figures tied to its own testing—not independent test results or a prediction for a particular user. The word “up to” matters: the claims do not establish the runtime you will get with your settings, network, apps and usage pattern. See vivo India’s T5 Pro announcement.
Those figures can help identify the tasks for which vivo is making an endurance claim, but they do not replace a like-for-like independent comparison with the phone you own or are considering. A personalized estimate also requires the exact phone and your typical usage mix.
