Replace a nonstick pan when its coating is visibly deteriorating—particularly when it is peeling, flaking, chipping, blistering, or covered with extensive scratches. A single superficial mark is not automatically the same as a failed pan. Inspect the coating, compare the damage with the pan maker’s care instructions, and use the more cautious option when the surface has begun to wear away.
The short answer: replace the pan when the coating is breaking down
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) advises replacing old cookware when the coating visibly deteriorates with “excessive scratches, peeling, flaking, and chipping.” MedlinePlus, from the U.S. National Library of Medicine, gives a stricter practical rule: do not use cookware once its coating has started to peel or wear away.

Those recommendations are condition-based, not age-based. Nonstick pans do not all use the same coating, and they are not used under the same heat, utensil, washing, or storage conditions. There is no reliable universal number of years that establishes when every nonstick pan must be discarded. The visible condition of your particular pan matters more than its purchase date.

Use this decision order:
- Peeling, flaking, chipping, blistering, or large areas of exposed surface: stop using the pan and replace it.
- Many deep or extensive scratches: replace it, especially when the manufacturer describes that level of damage as unacceptable.
- One or a few light surface marks: do not assume replacement is mandatory; inspect the extent and check the product instructions.
- Uncertainty about whether the coating is intact: treat visible wear conservatively and contact the manufacturer or replace the pan.
What damage actually means the pan is finished?
Peeling, flaking, and chipping
These are the clearest replacement signs because the coating is no longer remaining as a continuous surface. A lifted edge, a patch that breaks away when washed, or chips missing from the cooking area indicates visible deterioration. MedlinePlus says never to use cookware once the coating has started to peel or wear away. Do not try to glue, paint, season, or otherwise repair a nonstick coating in contact with food.

Blistering or bubbling
Blistered or bubbled areas show that the surface has changed shape rather than merely acquired a cosmetic line. Manufacturer support guidance from Circulon distinguishes minor scratches from more substantial damage such as heavy chipping, blistering, or large-scale peeling. If the surface is raised, bubbling, or breaking apart, retire the pan instead of waiting for the damaged area to spread.
Extensive scratches
SFA includes excessive scratches among the signs that an old nonstick pan should be replaced. “Excessive” is a condition judgment rather than a measured count. A dense network of grooves across the cooking surface, deep cuts that catch a fingernail, or scratches that expose a different layer are materially different from a short, shallow line.
A small superficial mark
Not every mark is proof that a pan has failed. Circulon’s manufacturer guidance separates minor surface scratches from heavy chipping, blistering, and large-scale peeling. A light mark that does not lift, flake, or expose a broad damaged patch should be assessed against the pan’s own instructions. Do not use the absence of peeling as permission to keep using a pan that has extensive or deep damage.

Inspect the pan when it is cool, clean, and completely dry. Food residue and oil can hide a lifted edge, while a hot surface can make a mark look different from its normal condition.
- Wash gently. Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge, as SFA recommends. Do not scrub the surface with an abrasive pad just to test it.
- Dry it fully. Moisture and reflected light can make ordinary marks look like chips.
- Use bright, angled light. Look across the cooking surface rather than only straight down. A lifted edge or blister casts a visible shadow.
- Map the damage. Note whether you see a single shallow line, a cluster of scratches, a chip, a flake, a peeled edge, or a raised blister.
- Check whether the coating remains continuous. A surface that is visibly missing material has crossed the line from cosmetic wear to deterioration.
- Read the product-specific instructions. The pan maker may define acceptable minor scratching or give a replacement warning for its particular coating.
- Choose the safer decision when the evidence is unclear. If you cannot tell whether material is lifting or wearing away, stop cooking in the pan until the manufacturer gives a clear answer or replace it.
Scratch severity: a decision table
| What you see | How to interpret it | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| One or a few faint surface lines | May be minor wear; not automatically equivalent to peeling | Check the manufacturer’s guidance and monitor the surface |
| Many scratches across the cooking area | Fits SFA’s description of excessive scratching | Replace the pan |
| Deep grooves, heavy chipping, or exposed patches | Substantial coating damage | Stop using it and replace it |
| Raised bubbles or blisters | Coating has changed shape and may break apart | Stop using it and replace it |
| Peeling or flaking edges | Coating is visibly wearing away | Do not use it; replace it |
This table is a practical application of the cited safety guidance, not a universal grading standard. A manufacturer can set a more specific limit for its own pan, so its instructions take priority for that model.

Does one scratch mean you must throw the pan away?
No. The available guidance does not say that every tiny scratch requires immediate replacement. Circulon’s May 22, 2026 support guidance explicitly distinguishes minor scratches from heavy chipping, blistering, or large-scale peeling. SFA, meanwhile, refers to excessive scratches when describing visible deterioration.
The important distinction is between a superficial mark and damage that removes or loosens the coating. Do not turn “one scratch is not automatically disqualifying” into “scratches are harmless.” A deep cut, a growing cluster of cuts, or any area that starts to chip or peel should be treated as a replacement condition.

If the pan’s documentation gives a stricter instruction than this general distinction, follow the documentation. Coatings and construction methods differ, and a rule written for one brand or model should not be generalized to every nonstick pan.
What food-safety guidance says about nonstick coatings
FDA information about PFAS migration
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says studies show negligible amounts of PFAS in the highly polymerized coating used on nonstick cookware can migrate to food. “Negligible amounts” is a qualitative description, not a percentage or a guarantee that every damaged pan is safe. It is general information about authorized food-contact coatings and does not override advice to stop using cookware whose coating is visibly peeling or deteriorated.
Why visible damage still matters
The replacement recommendation is based on the physical condition of the cookware. Once a surface is peeling, flaking, chipping, blistering, or substantially worn, the pan no longer matches the intact-coating condition discussed in general FDA information. That is why the SFA and MedlinePlus recommendations remain important even though FDA describes migration from an intact, highly polymerized coating as negligible.

Conversely, the FDA statement should not be used to claim that every scratch is dangerous. The evidence supplied here does not establish a numeric risk for a particular scratch, a photograph, or a specific pan. It supports a proportionate response: do not panic over a minor mark, but do not continue using a visibly deteriorating coating.

There is no authoritative, universal lifespan figure in the guidance cited here. A promise such as “replace every two years” would imply a precision the evidence does not support. Two pans bought at the same time can age differently if one is repeatedly heated empty, used on high heat, struck with hard utensils, or scrubbed aggressively.
Use elapsed time as a prompt to inspect the pan, not as the replacement rule. An older pan with an intact coating may not meet the visible-deterioration criteria, while a newer pan that has peeled or flaked should be removed from service immediately.
Habits that reduce avoidable coating wear
Avoid empty preheating and excessive heat
SFA advises against preheating a nonstick pan while it is empty and recommends avoiding high heat. T-fal’s care guidance likewise warns that high-temperature cooking can damage nonstick coating. Put food, liquid, or fat in the pan according to the recipe and use the lowest heat that accomplishes the cooking task. These practices can reduce preventable wear, but they cannot restore a coating that has already peeled or flaked.
Use suitable utensils
SFA recommends wooden, silicone, or plastic utensils. MedlinePlus also advises avoiding hard utensils that can scratch surfaces. Metal edges, sharp tools, and cutting food directly in the pan can create marks that accumulate over time. Choose an utensil that will not gouge the coating, and lift food rather than scraping forcefully across the surface.

Wash with a soft sponge
Clean the pan with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge. Abrasive cleaners and rough pads can turn minor wear into extensive scratching. If food is stuck, soak the pan rather than attacking it with a hard tool. Cleaning more gently protects an intact surface; it does not make a damaged pan suitable for continued use.

“I found one hairline scratch after washing.”
Do not automatically discard the pan solely because of that line. Confirm that it is shallow, does not lift, and is not part of a larger network of damage. Then consult the pan’s care instructions and use soft utensils and moderate heat going forward.
“The cooking area is covered with many scratches.”
That is closer to SFA’s “excessive scratches” warning than to a minor surface mark. Replace the pan, particularly if the scratches are deep or expose another layer.
“A small chip came off the edge.”
A chip means coating material has been lost. MedlinePlus says not to use cookware once its coating has started to peel or wear away, and SFA lists chipping as visible deterioration. Stop using the pan and replace it.

“The surface has bubbles but has not peeled yet.”
Blistering is substantial coating damage in the manufacturer guidance cited above. Do not wait for the bubble to open; replace the pan.

“Eggs now stick, but I cannot see a scratch.”
Loss of nonstick performance alone does not identify the precise condition of the coating. Inspect under bright light, clean gently, and review the model’s instructions. If you find peeling, flaking, chipping, blistering, or extensive scratches, replace the pan. If the coating looks intact, ask the manufacturer about the model rather than assuming that sticking by itself proves a safety failure.
Manufacturer instructions can change the decision
General guidance is useful for triage, but the pan maker’s instructions are the right reference for a specific coating. Circulon’s support material illustrates why: it treats minor scratches differently from heavy chipping, blistering, and large-scale peeling. T-fal’s care material emphasizes that high-temperature cooking can damage its nonstick coating.
Find the model name or number on the handle, base, packaging, or receipt and look up the care and replacement guidance supplied for that product. Follow any stated limits for heat, utensils, cleaning, and visible damage. If the manufacturer says to discontinue use sooner than the general rule above, follow the stricter instruction.
What to do after deciding to replace the pan
- Stop cooking in it. Do not keep using a peeling or chipped pan for “one last meal.”
- Separate it from intact cookware. This prevents someone else in the household from mistaking it for a usable pan.
- Check local disposal rules. Cookware-recycling and waste rules vary by location and by the materials in the pan.
- Choose the next pan according to your cooking habits. Read its heat, utensil, and cleaning limits before use so the coating is not exposed to conditions the maker warns against.
- Keep the care instructions. Product-specific guidance is more useful than a generic age deadline when you inspect the replacement later.
A simple replacement checklist
- Is any part of the coating peeling or flaking?
- Are there chips missing from the cooking surface or edges?
- Are there raised blisters or bubbles?
- Are scratches extensive, deep, or exposing another layer?
- Does the manufacturer classify the observed damage as a reason to stop use?
- Have high heat, empty preheating, hard utensils, or abrasive washing contributed to visible wear?
If the answer to any of the first four questions is yes, replacement is the appropriate outcome under the cited public-health guidance. If all are no, a minor mark alone does not establish that the pan must be discarded; continue to follow the model’s care instructions and inspect it periodically.
