How to Tell When a Bike Helmet Needs Replacing

Replace a bicycle helmet after a crash or other meaningful impact, even when the shell looks perfect. Also replace it when the shell or liner is cracked, loose or crushed, the straps are worn, pads or other parts are missing, or the helmet has reached the service interval specified for that model. There is no single expiry age for every bicycle helmet: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission guidance says to follow the maker and, when no advice exists, consider replacement within 5–10 years of purchase; other authorities and manufacturers publish different intervals.

Start with the impact rule

A bicycle helmet is designed to manage energy in an impact by deforming or crushing its energy-absorbing liner. That damage can occur inside the helmet without a crack that you can see. For that reason, a crash is enough reason to retire the helmet. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission all tell riders to replace a bicycle helmet after a crash because hidden damage can leave it unable to protect you.

The CPSC’s January 2026 helmet guide describes a bicycle helmet as intended for one impact. Its practical instruction is to replace the helmet after an impact even if there is no visible damage. This advice is specific to bicycle helmets; rules for some team-sport helmets designed for repeated, sport-specific impacts should not be transferred to a bicycle helmet.

What counts as an impact?

Replace the helmet when it strikes the ground, a vehicle, a wall, another rider, or any other hard object during a crash. A collision that throws you off balance, a fall at low speed, or a blow that leaves you unsure whether the liner was loaded should be treated conservatively. Specialized’s support guidance says its helmets should be discontinued after any impact or blow, including a drop, because damage may not be visible. That is a manufacturer policy, but it illustrates why guessing from the outside is unsafe.

If you cannot reconstruct what happened to a helmet—for example, it was in a bag that fell down stairs—do not use a visual inspection to clear it. The safer decision is replacement, especially when the helmet may have contacted a hard surface.

Why a crack-free shell is not proof of safety

The outer shell can remain smooth while the foam beneath it has compressed, fractured or separated. A liner that has already absorbed energy may not provide the same protection in a second event. CPSC-required bicycle-helmet warning language specifically explains that impact damage may be severe enough to eliminate protection while remaining invisible. New pads, fresh straps or a cosmetic shell repair cannot restore a crushed liner.

Inspect an older helmet for visible retirement signs

A routine inspection is useful for wear that develops between rides. It is not a substitute for replacing a helmet after an impact. Before each riding season and after long storage, examine the helmet in bright light and handle the retention system so you can detect looseness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shell and liner

  • Look for cracks, splits, holes or a shell that has pulled away from the liner.
  • Check the foam liner for cracks, dents, deep marks, compressed areas or other crushed sections.
  • Replace a helmet with a shell that is loose, shifting or no longer firmly bonded to the liner.
  • Fading or severe discoloration of the shell is a CPSC-listed reason to replace, particularly when it accompanies aging or extensive sun exposure.

Straps, buckle and fit hardware

  • Replace worn, frayed or stretched straps that cannot hold their adjustment.
  • Retire the helmet if the buckle will not close securely, releases unexpectedly or has broken parts.
  • Check that adjustment sliders, rear cradles and other retention components are present and operate as designed.
  • Missing pads or other missing parts are replacement triggers under CPSC guidance. Do not assume a helmet is equivalent to its original design after parts disappear.

What an inspection can and cannot establish

Visible defects are clear reasons to stop using a helmet. The absence of defects establishes only that you did not find an obvious problem; it does not establish that an impact-damaged helmet remains protective. Never keep a crash helmet in service because it “looks fine.”

Age guidance depends on the helmet and the date used

Manufacturers and public agencies do not publish one universal bicycle-helmet expiration date. Use the instructions for the exact model first, then consider public-health guidance when the maker gives no interval.

Source Published interval or rule Date basis and qualification
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Which Helmet for Which Activity?, January 2026 Follow the manufacturer. If the maker gives no advice, replacement within 5–10 years of purchase may be prudent. This is a conditional fallback, influenced partly by use, care and storage. It is not a measured universal lifespan or a guarantee of safety through the interval.
Virginia Department of Health, Bicycle and Skate Safety, page updated July 22, 2025 Replace a helmet that is over five years old. The guidance tells users to check the manufacture-date sticker.
Trek Bikes, U.S. Solstice and Rally WaveCel FAQ Replace three years from purchase, including when there has been no impact. This applies to the cited Trek models and U.S. manufacturer guidance, not every bicycle helmet.

Purchase date versus manufacture date

Find the date sticker inside the helmet, then read the instruction sheet or the maker’s online guidance for how that date is used. CPSC’s 5–10-year fallback is worded from the purchase date, while Virginia’s advice directs riders to the manufacture date. Those dates can differ substantially if a helmet sat in inventory before you bought it. Record both dates when possible and apply the interval written for your model rather than combining rules from different sources.

Use, care and storage change the decision

CPSC notes that use, care and storage can affect when replacement is prudent. Frequent riding, heavy perspiration, repeated exposure to heat or sunlight, chemical contamination and rough storage can accelerate wear. The guidance does not assign a separate numerical allowance for each condition, so do not calculate a personal “extra” service life. Treat deterioration, uncertain history and the manufacturer’s stated interval as independent reasons to retire the helmet.

Storage history matters even when a helmet was not worn. A helmet left for years in a hot vehicle, exposed to strong sunlight, or buried under heavy equipment may age differently from one kept in a cool, protected place. These conditions do not create a new formula for service life; they are reasons to follow the maker’s interval carefully and replace sooner when deterioration is visible or the history is uncertain.

Do not repair an impact-damaged bicycle helmet

A helmet that absorbed an impact is not a repair-and-reuse project. CPSC advises returning an impacted bicycle helmet to the manufacturer or destroying and replacing it. Specialized states that its helmets are generally not repairable and recommends discontinuing use after an impact or blow. Gluing a shell, taping a crack, reshaping foam or installing replacement pads does not recreate the original energy-management structure.

Pad kits can be appropriate only when the manufacturer specifically identifies them as compatible maintenance parts for a helmet that has not been impacted and remains within its service guidance. Pads cannot make a crushed liner safe. If the liner is damaged or the helmet’s impact history is uncertain, replace the complete helmet.

Dispose of the old helmet so nobody reuses it

Before discarding a retired helmet, cut or remove the straps and mark the shell as damaged. Follow local waste rules for the materials. If a manufacturer asks you to return an impacted helmet, follow that process instead; it may support a replacement claim and prevents another rider from finding a usable-looking helmet in the trash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for crash-replacement assistance before you buy again

Some makers offer model- and region-specific help, but these policies are not interchangeable or permanent. Trek describes a free crash replacement for a qualifying crash within the first year of ownership for its U.S. helmets. Specialized says a person who bought a Specialized helmet in the past five years and damaged it in a crash may be eligible for an assisted-replacement discount in the United States. Confirm the current terms, proof-of-purchase requirements, model eligibility and geographic limits directly with the manufacturer before disposing of the helmet.

A replacement benefit does not change the safety decision: stop using the impacted helmet while you check eligibility. Do not continue riding it while waiting for an approval or discount. Keep the receipt, model name, size, date of purchase and photographs of the damage if the maker requests them. Do not assume a policy covers a helmet bought secondhand, outside the stated country, or outside the qualifying ownership period.

Choose the replacement by fit and intended use

Once the old helmet is retired, choose a helmet that matches the riding activity and fits correctly. CPSC guidance distinguishes applicable safety standards by activity; use the certification label and the manufacturer’s instructions for the type of riding you do rather than assuming one helmet is suitable for every discipline.

Verify the fit

  1. Read the maker’s fitting instructions and select a size that sits level on your head without rocking.
  2. Adjust the rear retention system so the helmet is secure but not painfully tight.
  3. Position the side straps so they form a stable “V” around each ear.
  4. Fasten the buckle and tighten the chin strap until it is snug; it should not hang loose or allow the helmet to shift when you open your mouth.
  5. Move your head and gently push the helmet from front to back and side to side. Re-adjust if it slides over your eyes, exposes the back of your head or moves independently of your head.

Fit checks do not compensate for a helmet that is past its model-specific interval or has taken an impact. They are the final selection and setup checks for a new, undamaged helmet.

Match the helmet to the ride

Use the activity category and certification information shown on the helmet and in its instructions. A road, recreational, commuting or other bicycle helmet may have different coverage and features from equipment intended for another activity. The available guidance identifies applicable standards by activity but does not establish a ranking of individual models, so select based on the riding you actually do, correct fit and the maker’s instructions.

A practical replacement workflow

Use this sequence whenever you are deciding whether a helmet can remain in service:

  1. Ask about impact history. If the helmet was involved in a crash or meaningful blow, stop using it and replace it regardless of appearance.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s instructions. Find the exact model, read its age interval and note whether the maker counts from purchase or manufacture.
  3. Locate the date labels. Record the manufacture-date sticker and purchase date; do not substitute one for the other when the instructions specify a particular basis.
  4. Inspect the structure. Look for shell or liner cracks, a loose shell, crushed or marked foam, fading, worn straps, failed buckles and missing pads or parts.
  5. Resolve uncertainty conservatively. An unknown impact, missing history or inability to verify the model’s service guidance is a reason to seek a replacement rather than extend use.
  6. Ask about support. Check current crash-replacement terms before disposal, including region, purchase age, qualifying event and proof requirements.
  7. Retire and replace. Do not repair an impact helmet or rely on new pads. Destroy or return it as directed, then fit the replacement for the intended activity.

Questions to answer before deciding

Write down the helmet’s brand, model, size, manufacture date and purchase date. Then answer four questions: Has it experienced any crash, drop or other hard blow? Can you verify that the shell, liner, straps, buckle and pads are all intact? What interval does the maker specify, and which date does that interval use? Is there a current crash-replacement policy for your country and model? This short record prevents a common mistake: applying a general five-year rule to a model that has a three-year instruction, or treating an old but unmarked helmet as safe after an impact.

If the answers conflict, use the stricter safety decision. A recent impact overrides age calculations. Visible structural damage overrides an otherwise current date. An unknown history makes a secondhand or long-stored helmet a poor candidate for continued use because hidden liner damage cannot be verified.

Common situations and the safest answer

“I crashed, but there is no crack.”

Replace it. Hidden liner damage is the reason the crash rule does not depend on a visible crack.

“The helmet is five years old and has never been hit.”

Apply the exact manufacturer’s interval. Virginia Department of Health advises replacement over five years, while CPSC’s fallback without maker guidance is within 5–10 years of purchase. A manufacturer may specify a different period, such as Trek’s three years from purchase for the cited U.S. models.

“Only the pads are worn.”

Check the maker’s approved parts and instructions. Missing or worn components are CPSC-listed replacement reasons; pads cannot repair a damaged liner or extend an expired service interval.

“The helmet fell off a shelf.”

If it struck a hard surface or you cannot rule out a damaging blow, replace it. Specialized’s guidance treats even a drop as a reason to discontinue its helmets, and the general problem is that impact damage may be invisible.

“Can I give the old helmet to someone else?”

Do not pass on a helmet with an impact, uncertain history, structural wear or an exceeded service interval. A recipient cannot inspect hidden liner damage or recover the missing history.

“I bought it used and do not know its age.”

Try to identify the model and manufacture-date sticker, then check the maker’s instructions. If you cannot establish the helmet’s history, service interval or impact record, replacement is the safer choice than relying on an apparently clean shell.

Bottom line

Impact history comes first: retire a bicycle helmet after a crash or meaningful blow, even when it looks intact. For helmets without an impact, follow the model’s instructions, inspect for cracks, crushed foam, loose shells, fading, worn straps and missing parts, and use the date guidance from the appropriate authority. Because published intervals differ—CPSC’s conditional 5–10-year fallback, Virginia’s five-year advice and Trek’s three-year model guidance—there is no universal expiry number that overrides the helmet maker’s instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a new bike helmet after a crash if it looks undamaged?

Yes. Bicycle helmets are designed for one impact, and the energy-absorbing liner can be damaged invisibly. Replace it after a crash or meaningful blow even when the shell has no crack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is five years the expiration date for every bicycle helmet?

No. Virginia’s health guidance advises replacing helmets over five years old, while CPSC says to follow the manufacturer and, when no advice exists, replacement within 5–10 years of purchase may be prudent. Trek gives three years from purchase for cited models. Use the instruction for the exact helmet.

Should I count from the purchase date or manufacture date?

Use the date basis stated by the maker. CPSC’s conditional 5–10-year fallback is worded from purchase, while Virginia directs riders to check the manufacture-date sticker. Record both dates when possible.

Can new pads make an old or crashed helmet safe?

No. Compatible replacement pads may maintain an undamaged helmet when the maker permits them, but they cannot restore a crushed or fractured liner or extend an expired service interval.

Can a cracked helmet be repaired with glue or tape?

No. Impact-damaged bicycle helmets should be returned to the manufacturer or destroyed and replaced. Specialized says its helmets are generally not repairable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What visible signs mean I should replace a helmet?

Replace it for shell or liner cracks, a loose shell, crushed or deeply marked foam, shell fading, worn straps, failed buckles, missing pads or other missing parts.

Do any manufacturers help pay for a crash replacement?

Some do, under specific terms. Trek describes free replacement for a qualifying crash within the first year for its U.S. helmets. Specialized says eligible U.S. purchasers of helmets bought within five years may receive an assisted-replacement discount. Check current model, region and proof requirements.

What should I do with the old helmet?

Stop using it, cut or remove the straps and mark it as damaged before disposal, unless the manufacturer asks you to return it for a replacement claim. Follow local waste rules.

The Bottom Line

Replace a bicycle helmet after any crash or meaningful impact, regardless of appearance. Otherwise follow the exact model’s age guidance, inspect for visible deterioration, and replace rather than repair when the history or condition is uncertain.
