Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo verify a game screenshot, find the exact image on the developer’s or publisher’s own website, press kit, announcement, or verified channel. A visual resemblance or repost is not enough. If you cannot trace the image to a primary source, describe it as unverified rather than labeling it official or fan-made.
Start with the developer or publisher
Search the game’s official website and the publisher’s press or media page for the image. A press kit is a useful starting point: Larian Studios’ press page lists game-specific kits and describes their contents, including screenshots and other assets. Some kit entries include last-updated dates, which can help place an asset in context.

Finding the exact image in a rights holder’s press kit or official post is strong evidence that the organization distributed that asset. Save the page address and note any caption or date. The source establishes distribution, not necessarily who originally captured the image or whether later versions have been altered.

Compare the exact image and its context
Look for the same image in the official source, not merely a similar scene. Compare the visible content and framing, and note whether the official page identifies it as a screenshot, promotional image, or another kind of asset. A repost can help you locate a possible source, but it does not by itself prove that the files are identical or that the repost is authorized.

- Primary-source presence: Is the exact image available from the developer or publisher?
- Context: Does the official page supply a date, caption, game title, or campaign context?
- Image category: Is it an official promotional asset or a player’s gameplay capture?
- Intended use: Do the rights holder’s terms allow the reuse you have in mind?
Distinguish promotional screenshots from player captures
“Official” can refer to different things. A studio-distributed promotional screenshot is not the same category as an image captured by a player while playing, even if the player capture genuinely shows the game. Publishers may publish rules for player-made captures as well as distribute press assets. For example, KONAMI’s GRADIUS ORIGINS Video and Screenshot Posting Guidelines, revised July 1, 2026, cover gameplay screenshots; Larian’s press page provides official press materials. Check which category applies before describing an image.
Use visual clues cautiously
Interface elements, unusual framing, polished lighting, or a watermark may prompt further checking, but appearance alone does not establish who made or published an image. The official materials cited here do not set out a universal visual fingerprint for authentic screenshots. Do not infer that an image is manipulated or fan-made solely because it looks unusually polished, cropped, or different from other captures.

An image may have been cropped, edited, upscaled, or reposted after publication. The cited publisher guidance does not provide a universal forensic test for detecting those changes. Unless you can verify the specific file and its history, state what you confirmed and leave the rest uncertain.

Provenance is not permission. Each rights holder sets its own conditions, so check the current rules for the specific game, publisher, region, and intended use before reposting or modifying an image.

Gaijin Entertainment’s press-kit guidelines, last updated August 14, 2025, say: “You are not allowed to modify the Press Kit materials, except for making technical adjustments, such as resizing assets to fit specific formats or platforms, provided the content remains visually and contextually intact.” KONAMI’s guidelines also prohibit posting screenshots created by third parties without permission. These are examples of distinct publishers’ terms, not a universal rule for every game.
For another example, BOCSTE, Ltd.’s Content Usage Guidelines for Ad SHOOt, published June 18, 2024, gives directions for screenshot posting and press-kit use. Read the applicable page rather than assuming a permission granted for one title or asset applies to another.
