Occasionally forgetting a word, misplacing something, or missing a payment can happen with age. A change deserves more attention when it happens repeatedly, worsens over time, or makes familiar daily activities harder or less safe. These signs do not diagnose dementia: memory and thinking changes can have other causes, so discuss concerning changes with a health care professional.
What can be an ordinary lapse—and what deserves attention?
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) offers examples of occasional lapses that can happen with age alongside patterns that merit medical discussion. The distinction is not a self-test: consider whether the change is recurring and affecting familiar activities.
| Occasional lapse that can happen with age | Pattern to discuss with a clinician |
|---|---|
| Sometimes forgetting which word to use | Trouble following or sustaining a conversation |
| Losing things from time to time | Often misplacing things and being unable to find them |
| Forgetting the day but remembering later | Losing track of the date or time of year |
| Missing a monthly payment once | Repeated difficulty taking care of bills |
| An occasional poor decision | Poor judgment and decisions much of the time |
These examples are from the NIA’s comparison of age-related forgetfulness and signs of dementia. One incident does not establish a diagnosis; a pattern, a change from the person’s usual abilities, and its effect on everyday life matter.
What kinds of changes are more concerning?
Memory is only one part of thinking. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, and changes can also involve language, judgment, orientation, attention, or behavior. Pay attention to changes such as:

- Struggling repeatedly with bills, self-care, or other familiar responsibilities.
- Changes in judgment or behavior that interfere with usual activities or safety.
These signs warrant discussion, but they do not by themselves prove dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The NIA explains that Alzheimer’s disease can affect abilities beyond memory; only a clinical assessment can help determine what is causing an individual’s changes.
Could something other than dementia be causing memory problems?
Yes. The NIA lists possible causes and contributing factors including depression, blood clots, sleep disturbances, infections, and medication side effects. Some causes may be treatable, so it is worth raising new or worrying symptoms rather than assuming they are an inevitable part of aging.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is also distinct from dementia. Someone with MCI may have more memory difficulty than expected for their age while still managing everyday activities. Not everyone with MCI develops Alzheimer’s disease. A clinician can help assess the change and its possible causes.
When should you talk with a doctor?
The NIA advises talking with a doctor about changes in memory or thinking that concern you. Arrange a discussion particularly when changes are recurring, worsening, disrupting familiar activities, or raising safety concerns—for example, repeated questions, getting lost nearby, difficulty following directions, increasing confusion, or trouble caring for oneself safely.

Before the appointment, note concrete examples: what changed, when it began, how often it happens, and how it affects daily activities or safety. A brief written log can help you describe a pattern; it is not a diagnostic tool.

An evaluation may cover general health, prescription and nonprescription medicines, past medical problems, everyday activities, and changes in behavior or personality. A clinician may also assess memory and thinking, then decide whether other tests or a specialist referral are appropriate for the individual case. The NIA’s overview of how Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed describes these parts of an assessment.
