Calls going to voicemail or messages missing a delivery status can raise the possibility, but they can also result from phone settings, poor coverage, or service problems. Treat these signs as inconclusive—not as a reason to keep testing or contact someone through another number.
What the signs can—and cannot—tell you
Blocking is controlled on the recipient’s device or service, and callers do not get a dependable notification that it has happened. Apple says a sender is not told when their messages are blocked on iPhone. That does not establish how every carrier-level service or third-party app behaves, but it means message status is not a reliable way to inspect someone else’s settings.

Calls that go straight to voicemail
Repeated calls reaching voicemail may be consistent with a block, but they can also mean the phone is off, out of coverage, or set to Do Not Disturb. On iPhone, call screening can silence unknown callers or send them to voicemail, creating a similar result. Apple’s call-screening guide explains those options. There is no universal “one ring means blocked” rule; device state, screening, voicemail setup, and carrier routing all affect what a caller hears.

Messages without a delivery status
A missing iMessage “Delivered” label may be consistent with a block, but it can also reflect connectivity or iMessage availability. Android delivery indicators are not uniform across devices and messaging apps, so the absence of a status there is no more conclusive.

Green instead of blue on an iPhone
Green means the message was sent as SMS rather than iMessage; it does not prove blocking. Verizon lists other explanations, including the recipient not using an iPhone, iMessage being turned off, or an iMessage issue. Its messaging guidance discusses these distinctions.
Texts that fail to one person
A contact-specific failure can be caused by a wrong number, a messaging-protocol mismatch, or a service issue. Even if other messages work, the failure does not reveal the recipient’s settings or intent.

Troubleshoot your own phone and service
Use the scope of the problem to decide what to check. If calls or texts fail for several people, investigate your connection, device, or carrier. If only one contact is affected, verify the number and messaging route, but do not treat that pattern as proof of a block.
- Test your service with another willing contact. Check signal or data and make sure Airplane Mode is off. If multiple destinations are affected, the issue is more likely to involve your phone, account, or network than one recipient’s settings.
- Review your own blocked list. Make sure you have not blocked the contact by mistake. Apple’s iPhone instructions explain blocked contacts in Messages. Google’s Phone app instructions explain how to manage blocked numbers; some steps require Android 6.0 or later, and labels can vary by manufacturer and dialer.
- Check the messaging route. For iMessage or RCS, confirm data connectivity and that the relevant service is enabled. Switching between iPhone and Android can leave a number registered to the wrong messaging service. Rogers’ text troubleshooting steps cover data, Wi-Fi, storage, blocked lists, and messaging settings; Verizon’s guidance covers cross-platform issues. These are carrier-specific checks, not universal rules for every market or plan.
- Contact your carrier if a broader fault persists. If calls or texts fail with multiple contacts, or basic checks do not resolve the issue, ask your carrier to investigate service, account, or network problems.
Respect the possibility of a boundary
Only the recipient can inspect or change their own blocked list; Apple and Google’s instructions describe controls for the device owner, not a way for callers to view that list. Do not hide caller ID, borrow another number, or use another account to test or bypass a possible block. If there is an important practical matter, use an appropriate channel you already have and send one brief, non-pressuring message. Otherwise, give the person space.
