Stop moving the money, contact your bank and any payment service involved, and do not send funds you still hold to the person giving instructions.
That pattern can indicate money-mule recruitment, but no warning sign by itself proves that your bank has classified the account as a mule account. The practical question is what you were asked to do and what has already happened.

What a money mule is—and what a warning sign can and cannot prove
The FBI defines a money mule as someone who moves illegally acquired money for another person. Some people knowingly help criminals; others are recruited through a fake job, an online relationship, or an offer of easy money without understanding where the funds came from.

A bank account can become part of the scheme when another person uses it to receive money and then directs the account holder to forward the funds, withdraw cash, buy cryptocurrency, convert currencies, or send a payment through another service. The account holder may be left responsible for returned deposits, losses, identity theft, or an investigation even if they did not understand the arrangement.

Official agencies describe recruitment and transaction patterns, not a universal alert, transaction code, or self-test that proves mule activity. A suspicious deposit is a reason to pause and ask your financial institution how to handle it—not proof that a particular payment is illicit or that your bank has made a criminal classification.
Warning signs that deserve an immediate bank conversation
An unknown person sends money and asks you to forward it
The clearest pattern is money arriving from someone you do not know, followed by instructions to send it elsewhere. The person may say the transfer was accidental, claim they need help moving funds, or give you a deadline. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau warns: “If someone you don’t know sends you money and asks you to forward or transfer the money, you could be fueling fraud by serving as a money mule.”
Do not assume that an incoming credit is final merely because it appears in your available balance. Ask the bank whether the payment has fully settled and what it wants you to do. Do not return, withdraw, or forward it on the sender’s instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA supposed employer uses your personal account to process money
A job that asks you to receive business funds in your personal account, move money between accounts, cash checks, buy items with deposited funds, or send payments through a money-transfer service is a major warning sign. The duties may be described as “payment processor,” “financial agent,” “account manager,” or another vague role, while the actual work is simply moving money.
Be especially cautious when the offer promises easy money for little work, gives unclear details about the employer or duties, or lets you keep a commission from each transfer. A legitimate employer should not need an employee’s personal account as a pass-through for unexplained funds.

An online romantic contact asks to use your account
Criminals may build an online relationship and then say they cannot access their own account, are traveling, or need help receiving money. They may ask you to accept a deposit, pay a third party, or send funds to another country. The relationship does not make the financial request safer. If you have not met the person in real life and they want to use your account, pause all transactions and contact your bank independently.
Someone tells you to open an account in your name for their money
A recruiter may ask you to open a new checking account, payment wallet, or business account and provide the login details or debit card. The CFPB also warns against opening an account at another person’s direction so that person can receive or move money. An account opened in your name can expose you to overdrafts, disputes, identity-theft claims, and scrutiny even when someone else controls the activity.

The instructions keep changing or push you to bypass normal checks
Pressure to act immediately, secrecy about the sender, requests to split transfers, or instructions to use cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or multiple payment services all increase the risk. So does a request to lie to your bank, describe a transfer as something else, or use your own identity while the other person remains hidden. These behaviors are reasons to stop and seek independent guidance, not proof that a particular deposit is criminal.
Someone I don’t know sent money to my account—what should I do?
| What has happened | Immediate response | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| You received only a solicitation or instructions, with no money moved | Do not reply, click links, share account details, or agree to open an account. Save the messages and contact your bank if you disclosed information. | Do not “test” the arrangement with a small transfer or send identification documents to the recruiter. |
| Money is in the account or a transfer is pending | Stop all movement and ask your bank and the payment service for instructions. Explain who sent the funds, what you were told to do, and which transactions are pending. | Do not forward, withdraw, convert, spend, or return the money at the recruiter’s direction. |
| You already sent money or shared account information | Notify the bank and payment provider immediately, identify every transfer, follow their account-protection steps, and report the incident to the appropriate agency. | Do not continue communicating to negotiate another payment or assume that changing a password alone resolves the exposure. |
What to do if you may already be involved
1. Stop transferring money
The FBI’s guidance is direct: “If you believe that you are participating in a money mule scheme, stop transferring money immediately and notify your bank, the service you used to conduct the transaction, and law enforcement.” Stop scheduled transfers, cash withdrawals, cryptocurrency purchases, and payments to third parties. Do not send another transaction to prove cooperation or recover a promised commission.
2. Do not send money you still hold to the person who directed you
If funds remain in your account, leave them untouched while you seek instructions from the bank. The U.S. Department of Justice advises people not to send held funds back to the person directing the activity. A bank can explain how to handle a disputed or pending payment and whether it needs to place a hold or reverse a transaction through its own process.

3. Notify your bank and every payment service involved
Use a phone number from your card, statement, or the institution’s official website—not a number supplied by the recruiter. Tell the representative:
- who contacted you and how you know them;
- what you were promised or instructed to do;
- the dates, amounts, names, and references for incoming and outgoing transactions;
- whether any transfer is pending;
- what account numbers, passwords, card details, identity documents, or security codes you shared; and
- which payment services, money-transfer companies, wallets, or exchanges were used.
Ask what to do with the funds, whether transfers can be stopped, whether your online-banking credentials or debit card should be replaced, and how to document the case number. Contact each service separately if the money moved through more than one provider.
4. Protect the account, with the bank’s guidance
The FTC advises closing an account immediately if someone has your account information. The DOJ says to consider changing accounts, particularly when information was shared. Treat that as situation-dependent guidance rather than an automatic rule: ask the bank how closing, freezing, or replacing an account will affect pending deposits, direct debits, payroll, and evidence needed for an investigation.
Change exposed passwords through the institution’s normal website or app, enable multifactor authentication, and review recent activity for transactions you do not recognize. If your bank tells you to replace an account or card, follow its procedure and update legitimate employers or billers only through verified contact channels.
5. Report the incident
For a U.S. incident, the FTC accepts fraud reports at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FBI identifies the Internet Crime Complaint Center, commonly called IC3, as a reporting route for money-mule scams. Your bank may also direct you to its fraud department or local law enforcement.

In the UK, the National Crime Agency says fraud reports generally go to Action Fraud, the national reporting center, while police are another route depending on the circumstances. Do not assume that U.S. agencies handle every international case or that reporting procedures and legal consequences are identical in every country.
6. Keep the information that explains what happened
Save messages, emails, usernames, phone numbers, profile links, payment confirmations, transaction histories, invoices, and screenshots. Keep the original dates and amounts. Give copies to the bank or reporting agency when requested, and avoid deleting the conversation before you have recorded the relevant details. This record helps explain that you were responding to a solicitation and identifies the people and accounts involved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to talk to your bank without making the situation worse
Be factual and complete. Say that another person asked you to receive or move money, describe what you did, and identify anything you do not understand. Do not guess about the source of a payment, conceal a transfer because you are embarrassed, or repeat a script supplied by the recruiter. The bank needs the transaction trail and the instructions you received to decide what protective steps apply.
A bank may ask for identification, transaction records, copies of messages, or details about the sender. Cooperate with legitimate fraud procedures, but use contact information you obtained independently. A warning sign in this article does not establish that your bank has frozen, flagged, or criminally classified your account. Only the institution can tell you what action it has taken on your account.
Why sending the money back yourself can be risky
Fraudulent deposits can be reversed after they first appear available. If you forward the amount, the bank may later remove the original credit while the outgoing transfer remains your loss. The recruiter may also use a “refund” request to make you send clean funds to an account they control.
Best Value
For that reason, do not decide independently to return, split, withdraw, or spend disputed money. Ask the bank to handle any reversal or return through its documented process. Keep the funds available unless the institution gives you different instructions.
Is a job that wants you to receive and forward money a scam?
It may be, particularly when the role is vague, the pay is disproportionate to the work, or you must use your own account. Before accepting any financial-processing job, independently verify the employer, its physical business details, the written duties, and why a regulated business would not use its own accounts and payment controls.
Do not rely on a polished website, a contract, a recruiter’s social profile, or a small first payment as proof of legitimacy. If the core duty is moving money for someone else and you cannot obtain a clear, independently verified business explanation, decline and report the solicitation if appropriate.

The FBI warns that acting as a money mule can lead to prosecution and financial harm, including for people who say they were unaware. Whether a person is charged, what losses they face, and how authorities assess intent depend on the facts and the jurisdiction. Uncertainty about the source of funds is not a reason to continue; stopping promptly, notifying the bank, preserving records, and reporting what happened are safer steps.
U.S. guidance and the UK example are not interchangeable
The primary guidance for this article comes from U.S. federal agencies, so ReportFraud.ftc.gov and IC3 are U.S. reporting routes. The UK National Crime Agency’s reference to Action Fraud and police is a separate example for people in the UK. Other countries have different financial institutions, reporting centers, privacy rules, and criminal laws. If you are elsewhere, ask your bank and local law-enforcement or fraud-reporting authority which route applies.
Questions to ask yourself before taking any further action
- Do I know the sender in person and have I independently verified the reason for the payment?
- Why does the sender need my personal account instead of their own business account?
- Am I being paid mainly for moving money rather than performing a clear service?
- Have I been told to keep the arrangement secret, act urgently, or mislead my bank?
- Has anyone requested my login, one-time code, debit card, or an account opened in my name?
- Have I already sent money or personal information that requires immediate account protection?
If the answers point to someone else using your account as a pass-through, stop the activity and let the bank determine how to handle the funds and account.
