Unfamiliar withdrawals, unexpected small debits, or purchases you did not make are warning signs—not proof of how someone accessed your account. Contact your bank or credit union promptly through a channel you verify independently. Ask it to stop further access, report each unauthorized transaction, and keep a record of your communications.
Signs your bank account may be compromised
Review recent transactions and statements for activity you do not recognize. Watch for unfamiliar merchants, unexpected small debits, or withdrawals you did not authorize. A small suspicious debit is still worth reporting promptly; do not wait to see whether a larger charge follows. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends watching accounts closely when card data may have been exposed: Watch accounts closely when card data is hacked.

These signs do not establish how the activity happened. A suspicious transaction could involve exposed card details, compromised online access, or another route. Focus first on securing the account and disputing transactions rather than trying to diagnose the intrusion yourself.
What to do if someone may have access
- Contact your bank or credit union using a verified channel. Open its official app or type its known website address yourself, or call the number printed on your card or a recent statement. Do not use a phone number or link from an unexpected call or message. Tell the institution you suspect unauthorized access and ask it to secure the account, review recent activity, and explain how to dispute each transaction.
- Ask about exposed cards and account credentials. If your debit card may be compromised, ask the institution to block and replace it. Consider changing the PIN. Ask whether it recommends additional account restrictions or a new account number.
- Change online credentials if access may be compromised. Use a new, unique password, sign out other devices if the service offers that option, enable two-factor authentication, and check recovery email addresses and phone numbers. Secure the email account used for bank password resets, too: access to that inbox can expose reset links for other accounts. The FTC outlines these recovery steps in How To Recover Your Hacked Email or Social Media Account.
- Keep a clear record. Note when you noticed the activity, the transactions you reported, when and how you contacted the institution, and any case or confirmation number. Save relevant messages and statements. Follow the bank’s instructions for submitting a dispute or written confirmation.
How to avoid a fake bank-fraud call
A caller or texter may claim your money is in danger and pressure you to act immediately. Do not share a one-time verification code, give a caller remote access to your device, or transfer funds to a supposedly “safe” account. End the conversation and contact the institution yourself through its official app or website, or the number printed on your card or statement. The FTC gives this advice for unexpected calls about money at risk: How to handle unexpected calls that claim your money is at risk.

Report unauthorized electronic transfers quickly
For U.S. consumer electronic fund transfers, Regulation E deadlines depend on what was lost or exposed and what kind of transaction occurred. The CFPB’s guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, describes two different reporting situations:
- Lost or stolen debit card or PIN: In the relevant circumstances, notifying the bank within two business days after discovering the loss or theft limits liability. This is not a universal deadline for every kind of account compromise.
- Unauthorized transfer shown on a statement when the card was not lost or stolen: Notify the bank no later than 60 days after the statement was sent or made available. Waiting can affect your rights, so report the activity immediately rather than treating 60 days as a grace period.
The CFPB says that once notified, a bank generally has 10 business days to investigate an unauthorized transaction, or 20 business days for some accounts opened within the prior 30 days. If the investigation is not complete within the applicable preliminary period, the bank generally must provide provisional credit while it continues investigating, subject to exceptions—including possible written-confirmation requirements. A general resolution period is 45 days, which can extend to 90 days in specified cases, including certain foreign transactions, transactions within 30 days of account opening, or debit-card point-of-sale purchases. These are rules for different circumstances, not a guarantee that every claim will receive credit on the same schedule. The CFPB’s official Electronic Fund Transfers FAQ explains that “when a consumer’s account access information is obtained from a third party through fraudulent means such as computer hacking, and a hacker uses that information to make an EFT from the consumer’s account, the transfer is an unauthorized EFT under Regulation E.” Read the Electronic Fund Transfers FAQs.

Use two-factor authentication if your bank offers it. Some institutions support a physical security key; the FTC describes security keys as the strongest two-factor method among the methods it discusses. Support, enrollment, and account-recovery options vary by bank, so check compatibility before relying on one. Keep the key accessible, and make sure you understand how you would recover access if it were lost.
