Windows 11 licenses can look the same once the system is activated, but the license channel behind them matters. A Retail license is usually purchased separately and can often be transferred to another PC, an OEM license is typically tied to the device it came with, and a Volume license is meant for organizations using managed activation.

You can identify the license type with built-in Windows tools such as Command Prompt, PowerShell, and the Activation page in Settings. These methods show activation details like the product key channel, license status, and partial product key without requiring third-party software.

Checking the license channel is especially useful before reinstalling Windows, replacing hardware, buying a used PC, or troubleshooting activation issues. The results are safe to view, but they should be interpreted carefully because some systems may show generic keys, digital licenses, or organization-managed activation depending on how Windows was installed and activated.

What Retail, OEM, and Volume Licenses Mean

Windows 11 licenses usually fall into three broad channels: Retail, OEM, and Volume. The license channel affects how Windows was originally sold, how activation is handled, and whether the license can normally be moved to another PC. It does not necessarily tell you which edition you have, such as Windows 11 Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education; the edition and the license channel are related details but they are not the same thing.

#1 Best Overall
Microsoft OEM System Builder | Windоws 11 Pro | Intended use for new systems | Authorized by Microsoft
  • STREAMLIMED AND INTUITIVE UI | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
  • JOIN YOUR BUSINESS OR SCHOOL DOMAIN for easy access to network files, servers, and printers.
  • OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC WITH NO PRIOR VERSION of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
  • OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE PRODUCT SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.

A Retail license is typically purchased directly by an individual or small business from Microsoft or an authorized retailer. This may be a digital license from the Microsoft Store or a product key bought in a boxed or electronic format. Retail licenses are generally the most flexible because they can usually be transferred to a different computer, as long as the license is removed from the old device and used on only one device at a time. If you built your own PC and bought Windows separately, or upgraded using a standalone Windows license, Retail is the channel you would normally expect to see.

An OEM license is supplied by a device manufacturer or system builder and is usually included with a new PC. Most laptops and prebuilt desktops that ship with Windows 11 use an OEM license. This type of license is commonly tied to the first device it activates on, often through a product key embedded in the system firmware. In practical terms, replacing storage or reinstalling Windows on the same machine should usually reactivate without much trouble, but moving that license to a completely different PC is generally not permitted under the standard OEM terms.

A Volume license is intended for organizations such as businesses, schools, government departments, and managed IT environments. Instead of buying individual retail keys for each computer, an organization activates many devices through methods such as KMS or MAK. KMS activation normally depends on periodic contact with an organization’s activation server, while MAK activation uses a key with a limited number of activations. Volume licensing is commonly associated with Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education in workplace and institutional environments.

  • Retail: Bought separately by a user or small business; usually transferable to another PC when properly removed from the old one.
  • OEM: Preinstalled by the manufacturer or installed by a system builder; usually tied to the original hardware.
  • Volume: Used by organizations to activate multiple devices; may rely on KMS or MAK activation methods.

When you check the license channel later using built-in commands, you may see terms such as RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel, OEM_COA_NSLP channel, or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel. These labels describe the activation channel Windows is using, not whether the product key itself is safe to share or whether the installation is genuine in every possible sense. Treat product keys and partial key details as sensitive, and use the channel result together with Windows Settings activation status for a more complete picture.

Check Your Windows 11 License Type with Command Prompt

The quickest built-in way to identify your Windows 11 license channel is to use the Windows Software Licensing Management Tool, slmgr, from Command Prompt. This tool reads activation information already stored on the PC and reports details such as the installed product key channel, activation status, and partial product key. You do not need to install anything or sign in with a Microsoft account to run the basic checks.

To open Command Prompt, select Start, type cmd, then choose Command Prompt. For most license queries, a standard Command Prompt window is enough. If a command fails with a permission message, reopen it by selecting Run as administrator. Then run this command:

slmgr /dli

After a few seconds, Windows displays a small Windows Script Host window. Look for the line labeled Description. This line usually contains the edition and license channel, such as Windows(R), Professional edition, RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel, or VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel. The channel text is the part that tells you whether the license is Retail, OEM, or Volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful Command Prompt commands

  • slmgr /dli shows a short license summary, including the license channel and partial product key.
  • slmgr /dlv shows a more detailed activation report, including activation IDs, rearm count, and KMS-related information if applicable.
  • slmgr /xpr shows whether Windows is permanently activated or whether activation expires on a specific date.

If you want the clearest license-channel result, start with slmgr /dli. If the result mentions RETAIL channel, the installed license is a Retail license, which is typically purchased separately or obtained through the Microsoft Store. If it shows OEM_DM channel or another OEM channel, the license is tied to the device manufacturer and is usually embedded in the PC firmware. If it shows VOLUME_KMSCLIENT, VOLUME_MAK, or similar wording, Windows is using a Volume Licensing channel, commonly found on business, school, or organization-managed computers.

For a deeper check, run slmgr /dlv. This command is especially useful when the result looks like a Volume license because it can show whether the machine is using KMS activation. In the detailed window, entries such as Key Management Service client information, a KMS machine name, or a time-limited activation interval indicate that the PC is configured to activate against an organization’s KMS server. That is normal on managed work or school devices, but unusual for a personally owned home PC unless it was previously part of an organization.

Use slmgr /xpr to confirm whether activation is permanent. A Retail or OEM installation often reports that The machine is permanently activated. A KMS-based Volume license may show an expiration date, because KMS activation is renewed periodically. An expiration date does not automatically mean Windows is invalid; it often means the device must periodically reconnect to the organization’s network or VPN to renew activation.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

Be careful when interpreting partial product keys and activation IDs. The last five characters shown by slmgr are not enough to recover or prove ownership of a full product key, and they should not be treated as a complete license record. Also, avoid posting screenshots of activation windows publicly, because they can reveal device, activation, or organization details. For most users, the safest result to rely on is the Description line from slmgr /dli, followed by slmgr /xpr to confirm whether activation is permanent or time-limited.

Use PowerShell to View Activation and License Details

PowerShell can show the same licensing data as Command Prompt, with the added benefit of easier filtering and formatting. This is useful when you want to confirm the Windows 11 license channel, check activation status, or collect details from a device without clicking through Settings. Run PowerShell with standard permissions first; most software licensing queries work without elevation. If a command returns incomplete data, open Windows Terminal or PowerShell as administrator and try again.

To start, right-click the Start button, choose Terminal or Terminal (Admin), and make sure the tab is using PowerShell. Then run this command to view the main Windows licensing entry:

Get-CimInstance SoftwareLicensingProduct | Where-Object { $_.PartialProductKey -and $_.Name -like "*Windows*" } | Select-Object Name, Description, LicenseStatus, PartialProductKey

The Description field is the part to focus on when identifying the channel. It usually includes text such as RETAIL channel, OEM_DM channel, OEM_SLP channel, VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel, or VOLUME_MAK channel. The PartialProductKey value shows only the last five characters of the installed key, which is safe to display and cannot be used by itself to activate another PC.

PowerShell command results to compare

Field What it tells you
Name The installed Windows edition, such as Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 Home.
Description The license channel, such as Retail, OEM, or Volume.
LicenseStatus A numeric activation state. Activated systems commonly show 1.
PartialProductKey The last five characters of the installed product key.

For a more readable activation status, you can translate the numeric LicenseStatus value with a small PowerShell selection command:

Get-CimInstance SoftwareLicensingProduct | Where-Object { $_.PartialProductKey -and $_.Name -like "*Windows*" } | Select-Object Name, Description, PartialProductKey, @{Name="ActivationStatus";Expression={switch ($_.LicenseStatus) {0 {"Unlicensed"} 1 {"Licensed"} 2 {"Out-of-box grace"} 3 {"Out-of-tolerance grace"} 4 {"Non-genuine grace"} 5 {"Notification"} 6 {"Extended grace"} default {"Unknown"}}}}

If you prefer the traditional Windows licensing dialog but want to launch it from PowerShell, you can also run slmgr /dlv or slmgr /dli directly in the PowerShell window. These commands open a Windows Script Host dialog with activation ID, license status, partial product key, and channel information. slmgr /dli gives a shorter view, while slmgr /dlv includes more detail, including KMS-related fields on volume-licensed systems.

When reviewing results, match the channel text with how the PC was obtained. A store-bought digital license or separately purchased product key usually appears as Retail. A license preinstalled by the PC maker often appears as OEM_DM, especially when the key is embedded in the device firmware. Business, school, or organization-managed devices may show VOLUME_KMSCLIENT or VOLUME_MAK. If the PowerShell output shows more than one Windows-related entry, use the one with both a PartialProductKey and a current licensed status.

How to Read the License Channel Result

After running slmgr /dli, slmgr /dlv, or a related PowerShell command, look for the line that includes the license channel or product key channel. On Windows 11, the wording can vary slightly depending on edition and activation method, but common values include Retail, OEM_DM, OEM_SLP, Volume_MAK, and Volume_KMSCLIENT. This channel tells you how Windows was originally licensed or activated, not necessarily where you personally bought the PC or key.

If the result says Retail, the copy of Windows is using a retail channel license. This is the type commonly associated with a Microsoft Store purchase, boxed product key, or digital license bought separately from the computer. Retail licenses are usually transferable to another device, as long as they are removed from the old device and used on only one PC at a time. If you upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11, the channel may still reflect the original Windows 10 license channel.

If the result contains OEM, the license is tied to the original device. OEM_DM usually means the product key is embedded in the computer’s UEFI firmware by the manufacturer. This is common on laptops and prebuilt desktops that shipped with Windows. OEM_SLP is an older OEM activation style more often associated with earlier Windows versions, but you may still see OEM-related wording on upgraded systems. An OEM license typically cannot be transferred to a different computer, even if the original device is no longer in use.

If the result contains Volume, the system is using a volume licensing channel. Volume_MAK means the device was activated with a Mulle Activation Key, often used by businesses, schools, or organizations for a fixed number of activations. Volume_KMSCLIENT means the device is configured to activate against a Key Management Service server, usually on an organization’s network. KMS clients normally need to contact that server periodically to remain activated, so this result is expected on managed company or school devices but suspicious on a personal PC bought from an unknown seller.

Result shown What it usually means Common scenario
Retail Separately purchased consumer license or digital license Microsoft Store purchase, boxed key, transferred license
OEM_DM Manufacturer-installed key stored in firmware Laptop or prebuilt desktop that came with Windows
OEM_SLP Older manufacturer activation method Older PC upgraded over time
Volume_MAK Organization-issued multiple activation key Business, school, or enterprise deployment
Volume_KMSCLIENT Client activated through an organization’s KMS server Managed workplace or school device

Do not judge the license from only the partial product key shown in activation tools. The last five characters are useful for matching records, but they do not prove whether a license is genuine, transferable, or properly assigned to you. Also, avoid posting screenshots that show activation IDs, partial keys, or organization details. If the channel result conflicts with what you expected, compare it with your purchase receipt, the device’s original documentation, your Microsoft account activation page, and the activation status shown in Windows Settings before making changes.

Check Activation Status in Windows Settings

Windows Settings is the easiest place to confirm whether Windows 11 is currently activated, even though it does not usually show the full license channel such as Retail, OEM, or Volume. Use it as a quick status check after running command-line tools such as slmgr /dli, slmgr /dlv, or PowerShell activation queries. Settings tells you whether the installed copy of Windows is activated, whether it is linked to a Microsoft account, and whether Windows has detected an activation problem.

To check activation in Windows 11, open Settings, select System, then choose Activation. You can also press Windows + I and search for Activation settings. On this page, look at the Activation state field. A properly activated installation usually shows Active. If you expand the activation section, Windows may show extra wording such as Windows is activated, Windows is activated with a digital license, or Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

The exact message matters. Windows is activated with a digital license generally means the device has a valid activation entitlement stored with Microsoft’s activation servers, often based on the hardware ID. This is common on PCs that came with Windows preinstalled, as well as systems upgraded from an earlier activated version. Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account means the activation entitlement is also associated with the signed-in Microsoft account, which can help with reactivation after certain hardware changes. This message does not, by itself, prove that the license is Retail; you still need the license channel result from the command-line checks to distinguish Retail, OEM, and Volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the page says Not active, Windows is not activated, or shows an activation error code, select Troubleshoot if the button is available. The troubleshooter can resolve common issues such as a recent hardware change, edition mismatch, or a temporary activation server problem. For example, if Windows 11 Pro is installed but the device only has a Windows 11 Home entitlement, Settings may report that activation failed until the edition is corrected or a valid Pro license is entered.

  • Active: Windows is currently activated, but check Command Prompt or PowerShell to identify the license channel.
  • Digital license: Activation is tied to the device entitlement, commonly seen with OEM systems and upgraded PCs.
  • Digital license linked to your Microsoft account: The entitlement is associated with your account for easier reactivation.
  • Not active: Windows cannot verify activation; check the edition, product key, internet connection, and error code.
  • Organization activation message: The PC may be using Volume activation through a workplace or school environment.

Settings can also reveal clues that support what you found earlier. If you see wording such as Windows is activated using your organization’s activation service, the device is likely using a Volume method such as KMS. That is normal for managed business or school PCs, but unusual for a personal computer bought from a retail store. If the command-line result says VOLUME_KMSCLIENT and Settings mentions an organization, both results are pointing to the same activation model.

For the safest interpretation, treat Windows Settings as the activation health check and the command-line license channel as the license type check. Settings confirms whether activation is working today; slmgr and related tools identify whether the installed key is Retail, OEM, or Volume. When the two sources appear to conflict, record the activation message, the error code if present, the installed Windows edition, and the license channel result before changing keys or reinstalling Windows.

What to Do If the License Type Looks Wrong

If Windows 11 reports a license channel that does not match what you expected, do not immediately replace the product key or run third-party activation tools. The displayed channel can be affected by upgrades, repairs, motherboard changes, organization enrollment, or a key that was entered during setup. First, confirm the result with more than one built-in method, such as slmgr /dli, slmgr /dlv, PowerShell activation details, and the Activation page in Settings.

Start by comparing the license channel with how the device was obtained. A PC bought new from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, or another manufacturer will usually show an OEM channel. A Windows 11 copy bought separately from Microsoft or an authorized retailer is usually Retail. A work or school device may show Volume, especially if it is joined to an organization, uses a KMS server, or is managed through Microsoft Entra ID, Intune, or another management platform.

Common mismatches and safe next steps

What you see What it may mean What to do
Volume channel on a personal PC The device may have been activated with a business key, a KMS client key, or a key from an unauthorized seller. Check where the key came from. If it was bought online at a large discount, contact the seller or replace it with a genuine Retail license.
OEM channel after buying a used PC The license is likely tied to the original hardware and may be normal for that device. Verify that Windows says it is activated. Keep purchase records for the computer, not just the installed key.
Retail expected, but OEM appears Windows may be using a firmware-embedded OEM key instead of the Retail key you own. Use the Activation troubleshooter or enter your Retail key again in Settings if you want the Retail entitlement associated with the installation.
Not activated or activation errors The license may not match the installed edition, hardware changed, or the activation servers cannot validate it. Confirm the edition, check the error code, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the license, and run the Activation troubleshooter.

Also check that the installed edition matches the license. A Windows 11 Home key will not activate Windows 11 Pro, and a Pro key will not activate Enterprise. Open Settings > System > Activation and review the edition, activation state, and any displayed message. If the edition is wrong, you may need to install the correct edition or use Change product key with a valid key for the edition currently installed.

If the computer belongs to an employer, school, or other organization, contact the IT administrator before making changes. Removing a Volume license or changing the product key can break access to managed apps, compliance policies, or domain resources. For personal devices, avoid scripts, activators, modified ISO files, and unofficial KMS services. They can leave Windows in a non-genuine state and may introduce malware. When in doubt, use Microsoft support, the Activation troubleshooter, or the original PC manufacturer’s support channel to confirm the license path safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What command shows whether my Windows 11 license is Retail, OEM, or Volume?

Open Command Prompt as administrator and run slmgr /dli or slmgr /dlv. In the window that appears, look for the Description or Product Key Channel line. It usually includes wording such as Retail, OEM_DM, OEM_COA, Volume_KMS, or Volume_MAK.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does OEM_DM mean on a Windows 11 license?

OEM_DM means the Windows product key is embedded in the computer’s firmware by the manufacturer. This is common on laptops and prebuilt desktops that shipped with Windows. The license is normally tied to that device and is automatically detected during reinstall, as long as you install the same compatible edition.

Can I transfer my Windows 11 license to another PC?

A Retail license can usually be moved to another PC, but it should only be active on one computer at a time. An OEM license is generally tied to the original motherboard and is not intended to be transferred. Volume licenses are managed by an organization and are subject to that organization’s activation agreement.

What does Volume_KMS or Volume_MAK mean, and should I be concerned?

Volume_KMS means Windows activates through a Key Management Service, usually used by businesses, schools, or other organizations. Volume_MAK means a Mulle Activation Key was used. If this appears on a personal PC you bought from a third party, verify the license with the seller or consider contacting Microsoft Support, because volume activation is not typically used for normal consumer installations.

Why does Settings say Windows is activated but the command shows a different license channel than expected?

The Settings app confirms activation status, but it does not always show the full license channel details. Commands such as slmgr /dli, slmgr /dlv, and PowerShell licensing queries provide more specific information about how Windows is activated. If the result does not match how the PC was sold to you, check your purchase records, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license, and contact Microsoft or the device seller before changing product keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom Line

Checking whether your Windows 11 license is Retail, OEM, or Volume is easiest with built-in tools like Settings, Command Prompt, PowerShell, and the Software Licensing commands. The key is to look at the activation channel shown in the result, such as Retail, OEM_DM, or Volume, rather than relying only on whether Windows says it is activated.

If you plan to replace hardware, reinstall Windows, transfer your license, or troubleshoot activation issues, confirm the license type first and keep any purchase details or product key records you have. When the results are unclear or activation looks suspicious, use the Activation troubleshooter or contact Microsoft Support before making major changes.
