Its strongest case is a compatible Thunderbolt 5 MacBook Pro with M5 Pro/Max or better, when the extra display and port capacity matter enough to justify a premium dock. It is a less compelling fit for a Thunderbolt 4-only Mac: Brydge says those Macs will not get the Trio’s full capabilities.
What the ProDock Trio offers
Brydge describes the Trio as an 11-port vertical docking station for MacBook Pro. Its listed connections and features include three downstream Thunderbolt 5 ports, USB-A and USB-C, 2.5Gb Ethernet, SD 4.0, audio, a wireless phone-charging pad and up to 140W host charging. The vertical design holds the MacBook docked with its lid closed, creating a compact desk footprint.

Brydge advertises support for three 4K displays at up to 144Hz or two 8K displays at 60Hz. It also advertises 120/80Gbps performance, but says that bandwidth requires a Thunderbolt 5-compatible MacBook Pro. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured results. Check the Brydge product page against your exact Mac and monitor configuration before buying.

Compatibility is the deciding factor
Brydge identifies 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro/Max and M5 Pro/Max as its compatibility target, while also describing the dock more generally as designed for Thunderbolt 5 MacBooks. Broad physical compatibility should not be mistaken for access to every advertised feature: chip, Thunderbolt generation and display support affect what a particular Mac can drive.

In its product-page FAQ, Brydge answers “Does it work with TB4 MacBooks?” by saying the Trio is designed for TB5 Macs and that TB4-only machines will not reach its full capabilities. If your Mac is Thunderbolt 4-only, Brydge points buyers toward the ProDock Duo instead. Confirm the external-display limits of your specific MacBook configuration as well as the dock’s capabilities; the Trio cannot expand what the host Mac itself supports.
When the extra capacity is worth paying for
The Trio makes the most sense when you will use several of its distinctive features together: a vertical closed-lid setup, multiple external displays, high-speed Thunderbolt peripherals, 2.5Gb Ethernet and substantial host charging. If you mainly need a few USB connections or one monitor, a simpler dock may be a better-value fit. Brydge positions the Solo and Duo as lower-capacity options in the same family.

Price is a significant part of the decision. On October 7, 2026, Brydge’s product page displayed $399 with $459 crossed out; that is a dated displayed price, not a guarantee of today’s price. Macworld’s August 20, 2026 review also discussed the Trio at a discounted $399 and judged it worth $40 more than the Duo for buyers who value the added capabilities. That is the reviewer’s judgment at that price, not a standing price comparison.
What independent review evidence says
In its August 20, 2026 review, Macworld praised the space-saving vertical design, three Thunderbolt 5 ports, 2.5Gb Ethernet, 140W PD 3.1 charging and wireless iPhone charging. It also identified three tradeoffs: the MacBook’s own screen is unavailable while docked, wireless iPhone charging is slow, and the dock is expensive. That screen limitation is inherent to the closed-lid vertical setup described in the review: if you need to use the MacBook’s built-in display while working, the Trio’s docking arrangement may not suit your routine. The wireless charging pad is a convenience, but the review’s description of it as slow means it should not be a deciding feature if charging speed matters more than desk tidiness.

- Mac model and chip: Verify that your exact MacBook Pro is among the models Brydge identifies and determine which advertised functions its chip supports.
- Displays: Match your number of monitors, resolutions and refresh rates to both the Mac’s display limits and Brydge’s dock claims.
- Thunderbolt: Establish whether the Mac is Thunderbolt 5 or Thunderbolt 4; Brydge says TB4-only hosts will not deliver the Trio’s full capabilities.
- Power and networking: Decide whether up to 140W host charging and 2.5Gb Ethernet are useful in your setup.
- Desk workflow: Make sure you are comfortable docking the laptop vertically with its lid closed and not using its built-in screen.
- Total cost: Check the live price and compare the premium with a lower-capacity dock that covers your actual display and port needs.
Brydge’s ProDock family announcement provides its family positioning and specifications. The Trio is a capacity-first choice, not an automatic upgrade for every MacBook Pro owner.
