What you can do is check for concrete signs of tampering, review which apps have used sensitive permissions, remove anything you don’t recognize, and lock the phone down. Samsung’s own guidance treats the warning signs below as reasons to inspect the phone, not proof that someone else got in.
What the warning signs are, and what they aren’t
Samsung Support’s guidance for a possibly hacked Galaxy phone lists these as things worth investigating:

- Outgoing calls or messages you didn’t make
- Apps you don’t remember installing
- Unusually high mobile data use
- Rapid battery drain
- Intrusive pop-up ads
Each of these has ordinary causes: a misbehaving app, a software update, a weak signal, an aging battery. Treat them as clues. Battery drain alone, for example, does not show that spyware is installed.

Step 1: Look for concrete, unexplained activity
- Check your recent call log and message threads for anything you didn’t send or place.
- Scroll through installed apps (Settings > Apps) for names you don’t recognize.
- Open Settings > Connections > Data usage and look for an app using far more data than you’d expect.
Step 2: Review Security and privacy
Open Settings > Security and privacy. According to Samsung Knox documentation, this dashboard brings together account security (Samsung and Google), app security, software update status, recent permission use and the Permissions Manager.

Look at which apps recently used the camera, microphone, location or other sensitive permissions, and ask whether each one makes sense. A flashlight app using your microphone, for instance, deserves a closer look. Samsung describes permission usage as showing recent activity over roughly the last 24 hours or seven days, depending on the feature and device, so don’t assume the interval is identical on every model.
This is a limit worth knowing. These tools show recent app permission use and flag possible problems. They don’t keep a complete record of every person who unlocked the phone or exactly what they viewed.

Step 3: Scan and isolate suspicious apps
Run a scan
Where it exists, go to Security and privacy > App security > App protection and tap Scan phone. Samsung notes App Protection isn’t available on every model or carrier. Samsung also says antivirus apps aren’t pre-installed on its phones and doesn’t recommend third-party anti-malware products.

Samsung Support states: “In Safe mode, your phone will not run any third-party apps.” If the odd behavior (pop-ups, drain, strange activity) stops in Safe mode, a downloaded app is the likely cause. Boot steps vary by model and software version, so check Samsung’s instructions for your phone. Then restart normally, go to Settings > Apps and uninstall the apps you can identify as unwanted.

Step 4: Lock down the phone and accounts
- Screen lock: use a strong PIN, password or pattern. Open the lock screen and biometrics settings and delete any fingerprint or face entry you didn’t enroll.
- Accounts: check the Samsung and Google accounts registered on the phone and remove any you don’t recognize. Change passwords from a different, trusted device, and turn on extra sign-in protection such as two-step verification where offered. The phone’s dashboard can’t tell you whether credentials have been copied, so changing them matters.
- Updates: install the latest software. Samsung’s malware guidance says to keep the device updated and to install apps only from Google Play or Galaxy Store.
- Auto Blocker: if your phone has it (Settings > Security and privacy), Samsung says it can block unauthorized app sources, USB cable commands, software updates over USB cables and malware images in messaging apps. Its Maximum restrictions option adds protection but can limit some features.
- Permissions: in Permissions Manager, revoke access that an app doesn’t need.
Step 5: Escalate if it continues
If the phone still behaves abnormally, Samsung’s published sequence includes a factory data reset. It removes installed apps and data, so back up only the files you need first, and don’t restore suspicious apps or settings afterward. If problems persist after a reset, Samsung directs you to a walk-in service center or online repair.
If you suspect a partner or family member
If someone with physical access to your phone may be monitoring you, resetting or removing an app can alert them and in some situations increase your risk. Change account credentials from a separate trusted device first, and consider contacting a trusted local support organization before changing the phone itself. Samsung’s guidance doesn’t cover this scenario, so this is general safety advice rather than a Samsung procedure.

When a menu is missing
Samsung warns that screens and settings vary by carrier, software version and model. If a path doesn’t match, search Settings for “App protection,” “Auto Blocker” or “Security and privacy,” or check Samsung support for your exact model.
