You cannot prove that an article was written by AI from prose style or a detector score alone. The defensible approach is layered: preserve the original, verify its claims and sources, compare the voice with the author’s established work, request drafts or edit history, inspect any provenance signals, and use detection software only to decide what deserves closer human review. Report the result as evidence that is consistent with AI assistance, evidence that is insufficient, or evidence of documented human authorship—not as a certainty based on a percentage.
What you can—and cannot—establish
Authorship is a provenance question, not a grammar quiz. A person can write in a formulaic, polished style, while an AI-assisted draft can be heavily rewritten until it resembles the author’s normal voice. Translation, paraphrasing, copy editing and mixed human–AI workflows make the boundary even harder to observe.

A careful review can establish things such as whether citations are real, whether a publisher can show a contemporaneous draft, whether a machine-readable provenance mark is present, or whether the text is inconsistent with the named author’s verified work. Those findings are useful evidence. They do not, by themselves, identify the exact tool, prompt or percentage of machine-written text.
- “Evidence is consistent with AI assistance” is appropriate when several independent clues point in the same direction but no direct record exists.
- “Evidence is insufficient” is the correct conclusion when the only basis is style or a detector result.
- Documented authorship requires stronger material, such as drafts, tracked changes, interview notes, CMS revisions or a transparent disclosure that can be checked.
Style clues are prompts for questions, not proof
Readers often notice writing that feels unusually smooth or generic. These observations can guide an investigation, but each has many innocent explanations: a house style, a non-native writer using an editor, a rushed freelancer, or a human who prefers a predictable structure.

Patterns that justify a closer look
- Generic transitions: frequent phrases such as “in conclusion,” “it is important to note,” or “in today’s fast-paced world” that add little information.
- Highly even rhythm: paragraphs of similar length, repeated sentence patterns and a uniformly neutral tone despite changes in subject or stakes.
- Repetitive structure: the same claim restated in slightly different words, especially in introductions and conclusions.
- Vague authority: references to “experts,” “studies” or “research” without a named person, publication or link that supports the particular statement.
- Missing first-hand detail: a review or reported article that never identifies what was observed, tested, measured or asked.
- Confident generalities: broad claims with no date, geography, edition, sample or qualification.
- Context errors: a correct-sounding fact applied to the wrong country, version, audience or time period.
Use these signs to formulate specific questions: Which source supports this number? When was the information checked? What did the author personally observe? A human writer should be able to answer them; an AI-origin hypothesis becomes stronger only when independent evidence also supports it.
Start with the article’s factual and source trail
Claim checking is the most useful first test because it evaluates the article’s quality regardless of who wrote it. Preserve the original URL, publication date, author name and a copy of the page before making changes or contacting anyone.
Verify consequential claims
- List every material assertion. Mark statistics, dates, named people, quotations, study results, product specifications and legal or medical claims.
- Open the cited source. Confirm that it exists, is dated appropriately and actually supports the sentence. A source that merely mentions the topic is not evidence for a precise number.
- Check the primary record. Prefer the original study, government release, court filing, company documentation or direct interview over an uncited summary.
- Compare wording and scope. Note whether the article turns a limited result into a universal claim, drops a study’s sample size, or changes correlation into causation.
- Look for corroboration. For high-stakes facts, find an independent source rather than relying on a chain of articles that all repeat the same statement.
Fabricated citations, nonexistent papers, invented quotations and impossible dates are serious reliability failures. They can occur in AI-generated text, but they can also result from human carelessness or deliberate deception; classify the error and document it instead of treating it as automatic proof of machine authorship.

| Dimension | What to compare | What a mismatch means |
|---|---|---|
| Voice | Sentence length, humor, first-person use, degree of certainty and preferred terminology | A reason to ask for clarification, not an authorship verdict |
| Domain knowledge | Whether the writer normally explains technical limits, definitions and exceptions | Possible outsourcing, editing or a change of assignment |
| Factual habits | Recurring errors, citation practice, units, dates and geographic conventions | Evidence of a workflow change if the pattern shifts sharply |
| Reporting depth | Specific observations, named sources, interview details and original analysis | Generic synthesis may indicate a different process, but is not unique to AI |
Use enough comparison text to avoid judging a writer from one short paragraph. Different editors, audiences and publication formats can legitimately change style.
Request process evidence from the author or publisher
When the decision affects employment, grades, reputation or publication, ask for records rather than demanding a confession. Useful evidence includes:
- dated outlines, notes and successive drafts;
- tracked changes, comments and editor correspondence;
- content-management-system revision history;
- interview recordings or notes and source documents;
- the author’s description of any AI tool, task and portion used;
- a publisher’s written AI-use policy and disclosure record.
A plausible timeline is stronger than a post-hoc document created after a challenge. Check whether file metadata, revision times and cited-source dates fit the claimed process, while remembering that metadata can be edited or stripped. Ask focused questions about disputed passages and allow a response before making a consequential finding.

Some publishers and platforms may supply provenance information that records origin or editing events. OpenAI’s Help Center describes provenance signals as potentially useful information about origin, while warning that they do not guarantee accuracy, that the content is unedited, that it is legally owned, or that it is presented in the correct context.

Inspect any signal through the platform that issued it and record what it covers: the original file, a particular export, or only one stage of the workflow. An intact mark can support a documented chain of custody. An absent mark proves little because a tool may not create one, a platform may not preserve it, a user may remove it, or the signal may not cover the language or application used. Detection rates also vary by language.
How AI detectors should be used
The House of Commons Library states: “AI detection tools do exist, but they are unreliable and should not be treated as conclusive.” Treat a detector as a screening instrument, not an authorship test.
What a detector score actually tells you
A score reflects how closely the submitted text resembles patterns in the tool’s model and benchmark data. It is not a measured percentage of words produced by an AI system and cannot identify which system, prompt or person was involved. Short passages, heavily edited text, translated text and mixed human–AI writing are especially difficult to classify.
Record a result so it can be reproduced
- Record the detector’s name, version or access date and the language setting.
- Save the exact text submitted, its word count and whether headings, quotations and citations were included.
- Run more than one reputable tool only when the decision warrants it; note disagreement rather than averaging scores.
- Repeat a test after substantial editing only as a separate observation, never as a way to select the most alarming result.
- Attach the output to the broader evidence file and have a human reviewer interpret it.
Do not convert a detector’s “80% likely” display into an 80% probability that the article was AI-written. Do not penalize a writer solely because one tool flags a passage, and do not clear a text solely because a tool returns a low score. A human-written article may trigger a detector; an AI-assisted article may not.

What published evaluations can—and cannot—tell you
Association for Computational Linguistics study (2025)
An ACL paper examined 300 non-fiction English articles and whether people who frequently use ChatGPT could distinguish human writing from writing produced with commercial large language models. The sample describes that study’s design; it is not a universal accuracy guarantee for every genre, language, editor or model. Treat it as evidence about performance under the tested conditions, not proof that readers or software can identify authorship in the wild.
NIST 2024 GenAI Pilot Study, published record in 2025
The National Institute of Standards and Technology evaluated text-to-text generation and discrimination using human- and machine-generated summaries and metrics including area under the curve (AUC) and Brier scores. Those are benchmark measurements under specified conditions. They do not establish certainty for an individual article, especially after paraphrasing, translation, human editing or a mixed workflow.
Compare verification methods before choosing one
| Method | Reliability for authorship | Resistance to editing and paraphrase | Explainability | Access to underlying evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claim and source checking | High for accuracy; indirect for authorship | High, because facts can be checked after editing | High: each disputed claim can be shown | Usually available in citations and public records |
| Drafts and edit history | Potentially high when records are contemporaneous and complete | Moderate; records can be incomplete or altered | High if timestamps and changes are preserved | Depends on the author or publisher granting access |
| Provenance metadata or marks | Useful supporting evidence, not a guarantee | Varies by export, platform and removal resistance | Moderate; interpretation depends on the issuing system | Only the events covered by the signal are visible |
| AI-detector output | Low as a stand-alone finding | Low to moderate; editing and paraphrase can change results | Low: pattern scores rarely identify a specific cause | Limited to the tool’s score and documentation |
A practical review workflow
- Preserve the record. Save the URL, date, author, page copy and any visible disclosure.
- Map the claims. Highlight every consequential statistic, quotation, date, name and citation.
- Verify sources. Check the primary material, scope, wording and publication date.
- Gather corroboration. Look for drafts, tracked changes, CMS history, notes, source files or a transparent disclosure.
- Inspect provenance. Record what a machine-readable mark covers and treat its absence as inconclusive.
- Compare verified writing. Examine voice, domain knowledge, factual habits and reporting depth across several pieces.
- Screen cautiously. If needed, run one or more detectors and preserve the tool, date, language, text length and scores.
- Ask for clarification. Present specific discrepancies and document the author’s or publisher’s response.
- Apply a human decision rule. For high-stakes outcomes, require independent corroboration and review by someone who can assess the subject matter.
- Write a qualified finding. State the evidence reviewed, its limits and whether it is consistent with AI assistance or insufficient to establish it.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling a style impression proof
Why it fails: humans can produce the same structure, and editors often standardize tone.
Better practice: quote the specific passage, identify the factual or process question it raises and seek independent evidence.
Reporting a detector percentage as a probability
Why it fails: the score is not calibrated to the individual article or to a known proportion of machine-written words.
Better practice: record it as a screening result and combine it with source, provenance and process evidence.

Assuming missing metadata proves human authorship
Why it fails: signals may never have existed or may have been removed, and language coverage varies.
Better practice: describe the signal as unavailable and continue with other checks.
Equating AI assistance with poor quality
Why it fails: origin and quality are separate questions. Google Search guidance emphasizes helpfulness, originality and quality rather than origin alone.
Better practice: assess factual accuracy, originality, usefulness, disclosure and compliance with the relevant editorial or academic policy separately.
Making a high-stakes accusation from one tool
Why it fails: false positives can harm writers, students and sources, while false negatives leave generated text undetected.
Better practice: require corroboration, give the author a chance to respond and document uncertainty.
How to report the result responsibly
A useful report lets another reviewer see exactly how you reached the conclusion. Include:
- the preserved article and the date reviewed;
- the claims and sources checked, with any discrepancies;
- the author-comparison material and why it is verified;
- draft, revision or provenance evidence and its chain-of-custody limits;
- detector names, dates, versions, language, text length and outputs, if used;
- the author’s response and any unresolved questions;
- a conclusion limited to what the evidence supports.
Prefer wording such as “The citations contain errors, no contemporaneous drafts were supplied, and two screening tools flagged the text; these findings are consistent with possible AI assistance but do not prove authorship.” If the evidence is weak, say “The available evidence is insufficient to determine authorship.”
Bottom line for readers and editors
There is no universal tell for ChatGPT-written prose. The strongest practical approach is independent verification: check the claims, inspect the source trail, compare the author’s established work, request process records, examine provenance when available and use detectors only as prompts for human review. Keep authorship and quality separate, preserve uncertainty, and never turn a style impression or detector score into a definitive accusation.
