Usually, an AI assistant is not silently reading everything on your phone. It can receive sensitive information through four identifiable routes: what you type or upload, services you connect, permissions granted by your operating system, and browser or agent features that expose pages, cookies, screenshots, or history. A permission prompt shows that a capability was requested; an activity log, connected-app list, browser-sync setting, or conversation history shows that information may already have been retained.
Use the audit below to identify the exact assistant and account, inspect each access path, remove permissions or integrations you do not need, delete stored records, and test again. Location, messages, browsing, retention, human review, and model-improvement settings are separate controls.

What “tracking” means in an AI assistant
The word tracking can describe several different activities. An assistant might use a one-time location signal to answer a local question, read a message because a mobile permission is enabled, receive a webpage that you deliberately opened in an agent, or retain a conversation after you close the app. Those are different data paths and require different fixes.

A location-aware answer is not proof of continuous GPS access. It may be based on an IP address, a connected service, an address stored in your account, or a location you supplied in chat. Likewise, seeing a fact from a webpage does not prove that the assistant can read your entire browsing history.

How to check location access
ChatGPT location signals
OpenAI’s Privacy Center says ChatGPT can use location for relevant results and lets users manage location sharing. It also states: “ChatGPT does not separately save or store your precise location outside of what information is included in your ChatGPT conversation and context.” Precise-location sharing is unavailable in ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.
OpenAI’s connected-app documentation distinguishes approximate location from GPS. An enabled app may receive your IP address, device or browser type, language and region settings, and an approximate location. The approximation is a general city or region inferred from the IP address, not GPS coordinates.
Gemini location signals
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice says location may come from your device, your IP address, or Home and Work addresses saved in a Google Account. Those sources can produce a useful local answer without giving Gemini an uninterrupted view of your physical movements.
Location audit
- Open the assistant’s privacy or data-controls page and record whether location sharing is enabled.
- In the phone or computer operating system, open the assistant’s Location permission. Choose the least-privileged option that still supports a feature you actually use, or deny access.
- Inspect Connected Apps and the authorization pages for your account. A connected map, calendar, browser, or other service can provide location context even when the assistant’s direct location permission is off.
- Check whether you are signed in to a browser or account that stores a city, Home address, Work address, or region setting.
- Ask the same local question after disabling location permission and integrations. If the answer becomes generic or the feature stops, you have identified the data path it required.
How to check messages, contacts, and phone data
Google’s current Gemini Apps Privacy Notice lists call and message logs and contacts among system permissions and device data that may be collected when using Gemini mobile apps. It also lists information from connected apps and other Google services. The exact availability depends on the mobile operating system, app version, account, and enabled features.

Two controls must be checked independently. A phone permission can expose data directly from the device, while a connected-app authorization can expose data held by another service. Deleting a conversation or turning off model improvement does not revoke either one.
Message and contact audit
- On the phone, open the assistant’s app-permission screen. Review Contacts, Phone, SMS or Messages, Notifications, Microphone, Camera, and Screen access individually.
- For each permission, ask whether a feature you use genuinely needs it. Revoke permissions that do not have a clear purpose.
- Open the assistant’s Connected Apps or integrations page. Disconnect messaging, contacts, email, cloud-storage, or other services you do not recognize or no longer use.
- Visit the provider’s own account-security or authorization page and remove the same integration there. Disconnecting only inside the assistant may not invalidate a provider token immediately.
- Test the feature that previously used the permission. A failure or new permission prompt identifies the capability that depended on it; you can then decide whether that capability is worth the access.
How to check browsing history and page content
ChatGPT agent
ChatGPT agent can interact with pages through screenshots of a virtual browser window. OpenAI says agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until you delete them. Deleted chats and associated screenshots are deleted from OpenAI systems within 90 days, subject to the stated exceptions in OpenAI’s policy.
This is different from an assistant having a permanent view of every browser tab. The agent receives the page context needed for the task, and that context can remain in the associated conversation until you remove it.

Microsoft says Copilot for Windows saves browsing history—the information about websites you visit—on the device. Depending on your settings, it can send that history to Microsoft for diagnostics and product improvement. The documented controls are Profile > Settings > Browsing settings > Web data and security > Privacy, where optional diagnostic data can be managed.

Microsoft also says a signed-in Copilot can sync history, favorites, passwords, and other browser data between Copilot apps and Microsoft Edge. The controls are under Browsing settings > Sync and Import > Sync. A separate Clear browsing data control removes stored local records after you disable sync or import.
Browser and agent audit
- Review installed browser extensions and sidebars. Disable page-context, screen-reading, shopping, or assistant extensions you did not install deliberately.
- Open the assistant’s browser or agent settings and determine whether it can see the active tab, screenshots, cookies, downloads, history, or saved credentials.
- Check browser sync and import settings. Turn off synchronization or imported history, favorites, cookies, and passwords if you do not want those data sets available to the assistant.
- Open the assistant’s activity or conversation-history page. Look for page captures, browsing sessions, recordings, or prompts that contain sensitive content.
- Delete the records you no longer need, then use the browser’s Clear browsing data control for local history and cookies. Deleting a chat does not automatically revoke a browser extension or connected account.
Connected apps: authorization is not the same as permission
OpenAI documents several app-action choices: Always ask, Allow read actions, Allow low-risk actions, and, for eligible apps and accounts, Allow all actions. These choices govern what the assistant may do through an already authorized app; they do not create access that the provider or workspace has not granted.
OpenAI also says enabled apps may receive relevant conversation or memory context. On personal plans, information accessed from apps may be used for model training when Improve the model for everyone is enabled. Business, Enterprise, and Edu connectors are not used for training by default.
Connected-app review procedure
- Export or screenshot your current Connected Apps list so you have a record of what was present.
- Open every listed integration and identify its account, requested scopes, last-used date, and action level.
- Disconnect unfamiliar or unnecessary apps in the assistant.
- Open the service provider’s authorization page and revoke the corresponding token or session there.
- Return to the assistant’s privacy controls and review memory, history, model-improvement, and retention settings separately. An app can be disconnected while previously retrieved data remains in a conversation or memory store.
Retention, model improvement, and human review
Whether an assistant can access information and whether a company retains, reviews, or uses that information for model improvement are separate questions.

ChatGPT controls
OpenAI’s Privacy Center says eligible personal accounts can choose whether their content helps improve OpenAI models. Turning that setting off does not delete existing chats. Temporary chats have separate behavior for history, personalization, model improvement, and retention, so check the temporary-chat explanation rather than assuming it is identical to a normal conversation.
For agent content, OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access material for abuse or security investigations, support, legal matters, or model improvement unless you have opted out. This describes controlled access for specified purposes, not unrestricted employee browsing.
Gemini review warning
Google says human reviewers, including trained service providers, review some Gemini data. Its notice advises: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services.” Treat prompts as potentially reviewable unless the applicable account policy clearly says otherwise.

Four questions to ask for every assistant
- Access: What device permission, connected service, browser capability, or user-provided content can supply the data?
- Retention: Where does a copy remain—conversation history, screenshots, local browser storage, account activity, or a provider’s system?
- Review: Can authorized staff or service providers access it for support, safety, legal, or quality purposes?
- Model use: Can the information help improve models, and which account-level switch controls that use?
Do not treat one answer as proof of the others. Disabling training does not necessarily erase history. Deleting history does not necessarily revoke a phone permission. Revoking a permission does not necessarily delete information already retained.

- Identify the exact assistant and account. Record the product, mobile or desktop app, signed-in account, and whether it is a consumer, work, school, or enterprise account. Policies and administrator controls can differ.
- Open Privacy or Data Controls. Record location, memory, conversation history, temporary-chat behavior, model-improvement, and deletion settings before changing anything.
- Inventory Connected Apps. Disconnect anything unfamiliar, then revoke its authorization on the provider’s own account page.
- Inspect operating-system permissions. Check location, contacts, phone or SMS, notifications, microphone, camera, and screen capture. Use the least access needed.
- Inspect browser exposure. Review extensions, page-context or sidebar features, cookies, saved passwords, sync/import, and browsing-history settings.
- Review and delete retained records. Check conversation and activity pages for chats, screenshots, recordings, or browsing sessions. Delete what you no longer want stored and clear local browser data where appropriate.
- Re-test with permissions disabled. Repeat a harmless task. If a feature stops working, that reveals the data path it depended on; restore only the permission you decide is justified.
- Ask an administrator for managed accounts. Work and school policies may impose retention, compliance logging, or connector rules that you cannot change personally.
How to interpret common clues
The assistant knows your city
Possible explanations include IP-derived approximation, a device location permission, a Home or Work address in an account, a connected map or calendar, or a city you mentioned previously. Check each source before concluding that GPS tracking is active.
It mentions a message or contact you did not paste
Look first at Contacts, Phone, SMS or Messages, Notifications, and screen-access permissions, then inspect connected apps. A notification-reading feature can expose message previews without granting full message-database access, so the permission label matters.
It knows a page you viewed
The page may have been opened in an agent, supplied through a browser sidebar, imported through sync, or included in a screenshot. Review agent history, extensions, active-tab permissions, cookies, and sync/import settings.

Turning off one switch changed nothing
That is expected when the switch controls a different layer. For example, a model-improvement setting does not delete history, and deleting a chat does not disconnect an app. Continue through the access, retention, review, and model-use checks separately.
Consumer, work, school, and enterprise differences
The same assistant can expose different controls by account type. Personal accounts may offer a model-improvement choice that is not presented the same way in managed environments. Business, Enterprise, and Edu connectors have different default training treatment in OpenAI’s documentation, and precise-location sharing is unavailable in ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.
On a managed account, an administrator can control retention, compliance logs, connected apps, and permissions at the workspace level. If a setting is locked, hidden, or keeps returning after you change it, ask the organization’s administrator which policy applies and how long records are retained.
Safer operating habits
- Use a separate account or browser profile for sensitive work so personal history and connected services are not automatically in scope.
- Keep location, contacts, microphone, camera, and screen access denied until a feature needs them.
- Prefer read-only app access and “Always ask” action prompts when an integration supports those choices.
- Do not paste confidential credentials, private health details, legal documents, or messages you would not want a reviewer to see unless the applicable policy and business need justify it.
- After using an agent on sensitive pages, delete the conversation and associated captures, clear local browser data, and verify that sync or import is off if you do not need it.
- Review permissions and Connected Apps after major app, browser, or operating-system updates; labels and defaults can change.
What a trustworthy answer should look like
A responsible privacy check names the data source, the permission or authorization that enabled it, the record that may have been retained, and the control that revokes or deletes it. “The assistant is tracking you” is too vague to act on. The useful question is: Which account, device permission, connected service, browser feature, or conversation supplied this specific piece of information, and where can I remove it?
