A pair that passes one check can still be counterfeit, while a difference between releases can look suspicious if you are comparing it with the wrong year.
Start by establishing which Black Cement the seller claims to have. Nike documented distinct 2018 and 2024 retros, so release-specific comparison is the foundation of every later check.

Identify the release before inspecting the shoe
“Black Cement” is not one single production run. Nike’s pages for the 2018 and 2024 retros describe different release contexts, and a legitimate difference between them can be mistaken for a counterfeit flaw. Ask the seller for the release year, then use that year’s Nike reference rather than a generic Jordan 3 image.

Nike’s SNKRS page for the 2024 release identifies style code DN3707-010. The page describes smooth leather, elephant-print overlays, signature Nike Air heel branding, and a Fire Red Jumpman logo on the tongue. Those details are a reference for a pair represented as the 2024 model; they are not an authentication certificate.

2018 Air Jordan 3 Retro OG “Black Cement”
Nike’s separate 2018 page identifies that retro as an OG version and says it retained Nike Air branding in honor of the original design and its 30-year anniversary. A seller showing a 2018 pair should be evaluated against that release, not only against the 2024 page.

A style code that matches the claimed release is useful for organizing the investigation, but the available Nike pages do not establish that a matching code alone proves authenticity. Counterfeit packaging can reproduce printed information.
A step-by-step way to evaluate one pair
1. Get the seller’s exact claim in writing
Before paying, ask which release year the pair is supposed to be and request clear photographs of both shoes, the box label, the size tag, the tongue, the heel, and the outsoles. Ask whether the shoes are new, tried on, or worn, and whether the original box is included. The purpose is not to make the seller perform an authentication test; it is to establish what you are actually being offered.
Record the seller’s stated year, size, style code, condition, and any explanation for missing packaging. If the description changes after you ask basic questions, treat that inconsistency as transaction risk even before you judge the shoe.
2. Compare the box and shoe information with the correct release
Read the box label and the shoe’s internal information, then compare them with the release you were promised. For a claimed 2024 pair, DN3707-010 is the style code Nike lists on its SNKRS page. A claimed 2018 pair should be checked against the information and presentation described on Nike’s 2018 page instead of being forced into the 2024 code.
Look for agreement among the seller’s photos, the box label, the size tag, and the stated release year. A disagreement does not automatically identify a fake: boxes can be replaced, and used pairs can be sold without original packaging. It does mean you need an explanation and stronger corroboration before proceeding.

3. Use Nike’s page as a design reference, not a certificate
Compare the overall silhouette and the prominent elements Nike documents for the claimed release. For the 2024 reference, that includes the smooth-leather upper, elephant-print overlays, Nike Air heel branding, and Fire Red Jumpman tongue logo. Check whether the pair’s panels, branding placement, and general appearance are consistent with the official images.
For a 2018 claim, give priority to the 2018 reference and its Nike Air presentation. Do not reject a pair merely because it does not look identical to a 2024 photograph; the release year changes what a legitimate shoe should look like.
A visible mismatch is a reason to pause and investigate. A visible match is only a consistency check. Popular sneakers are copied precisely because recognizable details are easy to reproduce in photographs and, sometimes, in physical products.
4. Inspect the internal size tag and tongue branding as clues
An independent Air Jordan 3 guide directs readers to internal size-tag printing and details of the tongue Jumpman. Such observations can reveal inconsistencies in typography, spacing, or construction when compared with trustworthy examples of the same colorway and release.
Use this guide cautiously. Its examples compare different colorways, it is not an official Nike standard, and it does not establish a definitive Black Cement-specific test. A tag that looks familiar should increase confidence only when it agrees with the release information, external design, seller history, and transaction documentation.

5. Account for condition and replacement parts
Condition changes what you can reasonably infer from photographs. Creasing, discoloration, storage marks, or missing tissue paper may reflect wear or handling rather than counterfeit production. Conversely, a pristine-looking shoe with a mismatched box or an unexplained size-tag discrepancy still needs scrutiny.

Ask whether the seller replaced the box, added aftermarket insoles, or bought the shoes without packaging. Those facts do not prove a fake, but they narrow what the original documentation can establish. Keep the seller’s answers and photographs so that any later dispute is based on the listing as it existed when you paid.
6. Evaluate provenance, not just appearance
Nike consumer guidance published for Argentina says the best way to ensure a genuine Nike product is to buy from Nike, a Nike store, or a reputable, trusted distributor. That is regional guidance, so check the policy that applies to your country. The principle is risk reduction: a documented retail or distributor path generally gives you more recourse than an anonymous listing.
Provenance is not proof about a specific pair. A receipt can be altered, a genuine box can be paired with another shoe, and a trusted seller can make an honest mistake. Treat purchase records, seller history, and a clear return policy as evidence about the transaction rather than as a substitute for examining the pair.

7. Verify the transaction protections before sending money
Read the platform’s current terms for returns, disputes, inspection, and deadlines before you pay. Confirm who bears shipping costs, whether used shoes are eligible for a claim, what photographs are required, and how long you have to report a problem. A protection that exists only after an inspection or only for an item that matches the listing may not cover every dispute.
Use a payment method with a documented dispute process when possible. Do not let a seller pressure you into an irreversible transfer because another buyer is “waiting.” Urgency removes the time you need to compare the release and preserve evidence.
How to interpret mismatches
When a difference is probably release-related
The most important legitimate difference is the release itself. The 2018 and 2024 Black Cement retros are separate Nike references. If a claimed 2018 pair is being judged only against the 2024 page, branding or presentation differences may appear suspicious even though they could be expected for that release.

Resolve the year first, then compare all details with the matching reference. If the seller cannot identify a release year or supplies a style code that belongs to another release, the uncertainty is material and should affect whether you buy.
When a difference demands escalation
Escalate when several independent facts conflict: for example, the seller claims 2024, the box information points elsewhere, the internal tag does not agree, and the design does not match the 2024 Nike reference. One ambiguous photograph is weak evidence; a pattern of contradictions is stronger.
At that point, pause the purchase or seek an experienced independent review before money changes hands. For an already purchased pair, preserve the listing, messages, payment record, photographs, and packaging while you investigate return or dispute options.
Why a perfect-looking pair can still be uncertain
Official product photography establishes what Nike intended to sell, not whether a particular object came from Nike’s supply chain. Counterfeiters can copy color blocking, logos, and packaging. The available sources do not provide a Nike-issued, conclusive at-home authentication procedure for an individual Air Jordan 3 “Black Cement.” Your conclusion should therefore be a confidence assessment supported by converging evidence, not a guarantee based on one tell.

Do not treat the route as a binary “real” or “fake” signal. A safer route lowers the chance of loss and improves your ability to challenge a problem; it does not turn a visual comparison into certainty.

What marketplace authentication claims actually mean
In a June 6, 2022 statement, StockX said its authenticators had inspected more than 30,000,000 products since inception and had prevented $60 million in counterfeit sneakers from reaching buyers. Those are company-reported figures from that date, not independently verified measurements here and not evidence about any particular transaction.
The same 2022 statement described human inspection before shipment. Attribute that wording to StockX’s statement and do not present it as a guarantee or as a description of the platform’s current process without checking its current policy. If you use a marketplace, save the terms that applied on your order date and understand what happens if you disagree with the result.
How much should counterfeit prevalence change your decision?
A 2025 U.S. International Trade Commission briefing cited an estimate that about 10 percent of Nike products sold globally are counterfeit, attributing the estimate to Futurum Risk’s 2023 report. This is a broad, secondhand estimate: it is not specific to Air Jordan 3s and cannot tell you the probability that one listing is fake.

Use the figure as context for why verification matters, not as a calculator for your pair. The relevant evidence remains the release match, physical consistency, provenance, seller behavior, and available recourse.
A practical decision framework
Before purchase
- Write down the claimed release year, size, condition, and style code.
- Obtain photographs of the box label, internal size tags, tongue, heel, both shoes, and outsoles.
- Compare the pair with Nike’s page for that exact release, not a different Black Cement retro.
- Ask for provenance and read the current return, inspection, and dispute terms.
- Stop if the seller will not answer basic questions or if several independent details conflict.
When the shoes arrive
- Photograph the unopened package and the contents before removing labels or wearing the shoes.
- Check that the received pair, box, tags, and condition match the listing and your saved photographs.
- Compare the visible design with the correct Nike reference and review the internal tag and tongue branding as clues.
- Report a discrepancy within the platform’s stated deadline, supplying the original listing, messages, payment record, and photographs.
When evidence remains inconclusive
Do not convert uncertainty into a positive authentication verdict. Keep the pair unworn if a return may be available, request an experienced independent review, or withdraw from the transaction. The cost of walking away is usually easier to control than the cost of proving a counterfeit after a seller, listing, or payment channel disappears.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
You can reasonably say that a pair is consistent with a particular release when its release year and style information agree, its design matches the appropriate Nike reference, its labels and branding show no unexplained conflicts, and the seller and transaction provide credible provenance and recourse. You should still describe that as an evidence-based assessment, not a Nike-issued certification.
If the year, style code, physical details, seller history, and transaction records do not line up, the responsible conclusion is to pause or avoid the purchase. No single tag, logo, photograph, receipt, or marketplace claim settles authenticity on its own.
