Open the exact game’s current Steam store page and check its access wording. “Free to Play” means Steam lists the game as free to download and play; “Free Weekend” with a “Play for free until” deadline signals a limited-time play offer. A price shown beside the promotion is a separate purchase option, not proof that the promotion gives permanent access.
Check the game’s current Steam store page
- Open the exact game listing. Use the game’s Steam store page rather than a general category page, old screenshot, article, or search-result snippet. Offers and prices can change.
- Read the access label. Steam’s Free to Play explanation says these games are available to download for free and can be played without a subscription or credit card.
- Look for a Free Weekend notice and deadline. Wording such as “Play for free until” followed by a date and time indicates that play is offered only until the stated deadline.
- Check for a separate purchase price. If a full or discounted price appears alongside the temporary-play notice, treat it as an offer to buy the game—not as part of the free-play period.
- Read the current offer terms before deciding. The deadline and terms on the live listing are more useful than details from an earlier promotion.
What the two labels mean

Free to Play can still include optional purchases
Steam says a subscription or credit card is not needed to play a Free to Play game. If a game supports in-game items or content purchases, Steam Wallet funds can be used for them; those optional purchases do not change Steam’s definition of free-to-play access. Check the individual game listing for its own details.

Do not assume that every title handles post-event access or saved progress in the same way. The official Steam material cited here does not establish a universal rule for access after every promotion or for progress retention. Check the game’s current offer terms and its listing in your Steam account; buy it if you want to ensure you have purchased it rather than relying on temporary access.
