A bright-light check can reveal a clue, but it cannot prove a card is genuine. If the evidence remains uncertain, ask a trading-card specialist to examine it.
Identify the exact promo before comparing it
A Pokémon’s name alone is not enough: the same character can appear in multiple promos, languages, and versions. Record the card’s name, language, promo series, collector number, any event or product stamp, and its artwork and foil treatment.

Search the official Pokémon TCG card database for that specific printing. Pokémon’s entries distinguish promo series and identifiers—for example, Pikachu is listed under “Scarlet & Violet Promo Cards” as “214/1 Promo,” while N is listed under “BW—Promo” as “BW100 Promo.” These details help establish what the card claims to be; counterfeiters can copy printed information, so a matching database entry does not authenticate the physical card.

Use an official card entry or series card list, preferably for the same language and variant. Compare the printed name and text, illustrator credit where shown, collector identifier, artwork, stamp, and design details. If you are comparing two copies, check them side by side for differences in these same features.
#1 Best Overall
- The Pokémon TCG: Mega Lucario ex League Battle Deck contains 1 ready-to-play 60-card deck, 6 damage-counter dice, and 1 coin-flip die.
- This also comes with 2 coin condition markers, a deck box, and a strategy sheet.
- You will also get a code card to play this deck online.
Be mindful of the card’s era. Pokémon’s Scarlet & Violet design announcement describes changes such as expansion-code box coloring and foil or texture appearance. An older promo should not be judged against modern design expectations.
Use the bright-light check as a clue, not a verdict
Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to a bright light. Treat that as a preliminary screening check: “often” does not mean every fake will be obvious, or that a card that is difficult to see through must be genuine. Pokémon Support also recommends asking a local shop specializing in trading cards to evaluate a card you suspect may be counterfeit. See its counterfeit merchandise guidance.
Rank #2
Do not bend, tear, cut, or peel a card to test it. Those actions can damage it, and Pokémon Support’s guidance does not recommend them.
Check unusual details before calling a card fake
A visible difference is a reason to investigate, not proof of counterfeiting. PSA’s Pokémon Error Guide documents recognized promo variations, including the “Nintedo” misspelling on the legal line of the 1999 Japanese Ancient Mew I and inverted gold movie stamps on some 1999 movie promos.
These documented examples do not make every odd feature genuine, rare, or valuable. Check the exact card and the claimed variation against reliable, card-specific documentation before drawing a conclusion.
For a PSA-graded card, match the certification to the item
PSA’s security information describes features of its graded-card labels and holders, including a QR code that opens Certification Verification and a tamper-evident holder. Use the QR code or PSA’s verification service to check the certification record, then compare the record and available item details with the card in front of you. A valid-looking certification number by itself does not show that the holder contains the card described by that record.

This check applies to PSA-graded cards. It is not a visual authentication method for raw, ungraded cards.
When to ask a specialist
If the printing, physical appearance, or documented variation still leaves you unsure, take the card to a local shop that specializes in trading cards for an in-person evaluation. Avoid relying on a seller’s assurance or a single online image as a substitute for expert examination.

Pokémon Support’s warning about merchandise priced dramatically below suggested retail is specifically about booster packs. It is not proof that an individual promo card is counterfeit, and price alone cannot settle whether a single card is authentic.
