Use careful language when recording your conclusion:
- “Consistent with the 2023 listing” means the artwork, dimensions, variant description, and packaging do not conflict with the documented 2023 product.

If the deck uses card-art layouts, do not reject it merely because it does not resemble the 2023 character graphics. Conversely, a character-only graphic is not automatically suspicious if the seller is offering a 2023 board.

Ask the seller to identify the exact design and whether the claim is “standard” or “gold.” If a listing calls a 2023 board a gold edition but shows ordinary silver/rainbow foil, that is an inconsistency worth resolving. It is not, by itself, proof of a counterfeit: lighting, photography, a swapped board, or an inaccurate listing can produce the same conflict.
Measure the listed size
The 2023 listing gives a width of 8 inches and a length of 31.6 inches. Measure a loose deck on a flat surface, using the same reference points for every board. A meaningful mismatch should prompt questions about the model or the listing. The published dimensions are a comparison reference, not a forensic tolerance standard, so a measurement alone cannot authenticate or condemn the board.
Understand the original bag description
The product was described as randomly packed in a sealed, opaque bag. Zumiez describes the collaboration as blind-bag decks carrying Pokémon character and trading-card imagery on classic Santa Cruz decks. The announced launch date is October 17, 2026, so retailer inventory, shipping timing, and packaging seen before or after that date should be treated as time-sensitive.
The guide also says Santa Cruz has not published pull odds. A seller cannot turn an unsupported percentage or an invented “one in” claim into proof of authenticity. Ask for the source of any stated odds and keep the answer with the listing.

Check the expected contents
The 2026 guide describes each bag as containing one random deck and a Limited Edition Pokémon Player’s Guide booklet. It also says the package indicates that a Pokémon trading card is not included. A missing card is therefore not a defect if the package says no card is included; a seller who promises a trading card is describing an extra item, not the standard package documented by that guide.

Use construction details only as supporting information
An illUMATE product page describes the 2026 deck as seven-ply North American maple, epoxy pressed, and supplied with a co-branded sticker. Those are that retailer’s published specifications, not Santa Cruz authentication hallmarks. Use them to identify a possible discrepancy, not as a pass/fail test. Separate launch provenance from resale authenticity
Zumiez’s US release page describes an in-store raffle and a limited app drop for the October 17 collection, with app orders scheduled to begin shipping October 19, 2026. That process can support the original buyer’s provenance if the seller has a matching receipt or order record. It does not authenticate a resale item by itself: an authentic order can be resold, an order record can be incomplete, and a seller may be offering a different board than the one originally purchased.
Step 4: inspect the item without overclaiming what you see
- Record the release claim. Write down the year, collection name, design name, and any rarity claim exactly as the seller states them.
- Classify the artwork. Character graphics with the 2023 foil structure belong in the older comparison set; Pokémon TCG card-art graphics belong in the announced 2026 comparison set.

Step 5: verify provenance before you buy or open it
Ask for purchase evidence
Request the original receipt, order confirmation, raffle record, app-order email, or other contemporaneous proof. The document should identify the retailer, date, product description, and quantity where possible. A receipt supports provenance; it does not prove that the photographed board is the same item, so match the seller’s photos to the transaction details.
Preserve the listing and seller history
Save the complete product page, seller username, messages, price, promised edition, shipping record, and photographs. Marketplace pages can change after a sale. A seller with a long, consistent history is generally easier to resolve with than an account that refuses detailed photos, changes its story, or claims a rare edition without documentation, but seller history is still not a manufacturer authentication.
Request useful photographs
For a sealed item, ask for high-resolution images of all sides of the bag, seams, labels, and any visible product wording. For an opened deck, request full-board images, close-ups of both faces, the edges, the foil, and every insert. Ask the seller to include a current handwritten date or transaction identifier in one image when appropriate; that helps establish possession, not authenticity.
Keep the transaction reversible when possible
Use a payment and marketplace process that records the agreed description and provides a dispute path. Confirm the return deadline before opening the blind bag. Common traps that lead buyers astray
Confusing the two generations
A 2023 design is not supposed to match the 2026 card-art collection. Compare the year first, then use the correct variant count and package description. This single step prevents many false counterfeit claims.
Assuming sealed means untouched

The 2026 package description says a trading card is not included. Do not reject a complete 2026 package because no card is inside, and do not pay extra for a card merely because a seller implies it is standard.
Treating a retailer channel as a resale guarantee
Zumiez’s raffle and app-drop process describes how some original US sales were made. It does not make every later marketplace listing authentic. Ask for the original transaction evidence and match it to the item.
