Open the movie’s page in the Apple TV app and check its viewing options. A Rent button means Apple offers that movie for rental; if Rent is not shown, Apple says the movie isn’t available to rent. That does not mean it is free. Check How to Watch to see whether it is available through a service you already have or must be bought.
Check the movie’s viewing options
- Search for the movie in the Apple TV app and open its page.
- Read the How to Watch section and any displayed buttons. Apple says this section can show services and partners offering the title for purchase or streaming in your market.
- Check whether a listed service is one you already have access to. If Apple shows Rent or Buy, that is a transaction rather than proof the title is included with a subscription.
The Apple TV app brings together Apple Originals, subscription channels and services, and movies available to rent or buy. A movie appearing in the app does not by itself mean you can watch it free. Apple’s support instructions also say that if Rent does not appear, the movie is not available to rent.

What the labels mean
| What you see | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Rent | Apple offers the movie for rental. Selecting and confirming the rental starts a paid transaction. |
| Buy | The movie is offered for purchase, which is separate from renting it. |
| A service or partner under How to Watch | That provider offers a way to stream or purchase the movie in your market. You need access to the relevant service to stream through it. |
| No Rent button | Apple says the movie is not available to rent. This does not establish that it is free; check the other listed options. |
Apple’s Apple TV subscription FAQ says the subscription does not include third-party subscription services or titles available to rent or buy in the app. Access therefore depends on the specific title and the services you subscribe to.

Rental time limits
For rentals, Apple Support says you have 30 days to start watching. Once playback begins, you have 48 hours to finish watching before the rental expires. These are rental viewing limits, not a sign that the title is included with a subscription. See Apple’s rental instructions for details.

Availability can vary
Viewing options depend on the title and your market, and Apple says availability can change. Check the movie’s page in your own Apple TV app rather than relying on what another viewer sees elsewhere. The app is available on Apple and non-Apple devices, including smart TVs and streaming platforms, so you do not need to buy an Apple TV device to check a listing. Apple describes the app and supported device range on its Apple TV app page.
