A Metroidvania may suit you if you like exploring a connected world, finding routes you cannot access yet, then returning with new abilities to open them. It may be a poor fit if you prefer a fixed route, dislike retracing your steps, or find navigation, platforming, or boss fights frustrating. The genre label is only a clue: each game balances those elements differently.
What playing a Metroidvania usually involves
Metroidvanias are built around an explorable, interconnected space. You encounter barriers, discover permanent abilities or upgrades, and use them to reach places that were previously out of reach. Optional areas may hold further upgrades, and an in-game map is common. A 2022 conference paper identifies exploration, backtracking, and map-based navigation as central genre elements (conference paper); a Steam curator similarly describes interconnected worlds, ability-based progression, platforming, combat, and exploration (Steam curator).

In practice, the appeal is less about liking action games in general and more about enjoying a particular loop:
- You notice an obstacle and remember where it is.
- You find an ability that changes where you can go.
- You revisit familiar areas to uncover routes, shortcuts, or secrets.
- You decide what to investigate next, sometimes without knowing the intended route.
The boundaries are flexible. Team Cherry co-director William Pellen described the term broadly as “a game set in a large, interconnected world.” In a 2025 interview, Pellen and co-director Ari Gibson discussed how Hollow Knight’s progression shifted from a more ordered sequence toward sections, with some power-ups becoming optional. Gibson described the goal as building an interesting world with things to discover (PC Gamer interview).

Check whether the exploration style suits you
Do you enjoy finding your own direction?
If you like reading maps, building a mental picture of a place, and setting short-term goals for yourself, this structure can be satisfying. If you want a clear marker and a fixed route at all times, check the specific game’s map, hints, and objective guidance before buying. The genre does not guarantee that every game provides the same navigational aids.
Does revisiting feel rewarding or repetitive?
Backtracking is part of the structure, but revisiting a place can feel different once a new ability opens a route or exposes a secret. Whether that makes repeated traversal enjoyable depends on the game’s design. Do not assume that every title makes return trips short or painless.

Consider platforming, combat, and difficulty separately
Many Metroidvanias mix exploration with platforming, combat, and boss encounters, but the proportions vary. GamesRadar’s 2026 guide describes reactive platforming and challenging boss battles as common features, while its selected games differ in tone and difficulty (GamesRadar guide). If precise movement or difficult bosses are a deal-breaker, look at recent reviews and the particular game’s store information; the genre name alone cannot tell you how demanding a title will be.

Steam lets developers declare accessibility features on game store pages, and players can search using those features. Documented categories include adjustable difficulty, save anytime, adjustable text size, subtitle options, color alternatives, contrast controls, and camera comfort (Steamworks accessibility documentation). These are store-page fields, not a guarantee that any particular game supports them. Check the individual listing against the options you need.

Use examples as clues, not guarantees
GamesRadar lists SteamWorld Dig 2 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, describing its self-dug exploration, upgrades, and comparatively comfortable difficulty curve. It also lists Cave Story+ for PC and Switch, describing it as old-school challenging (GamesRadar guide). Those descriptions show how different games can feel within the broad genre; they are not a promise that either will suit you. Verify the current platform and edition availability before purchasing.

- Do I enjoy finding my own way through a large, connected space?
- Do I like remembering an obstacle and returning later with a new tool or ability?
- Am I comfortable not always knowing the next route?
- Do I enjoy platforming or combat, or have I identified a game with a balance I prefer?
- Have I checked the game’s map, hints, difficulty, save, and accessibility options against my needs?
If exploration and revisiting both sound unappealing, the genre may not be a good fit even if the art or setting attracts you. If difficulty or access is your main concern, decide based on the options and current player information for a particular game rather than the genre label.
