What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Do not use or fund a hardware wallet that arrives opened, pre-seeded, pre-PINed, or with an authenticity warning. Photograph the package, stop setup, disconnect the device, and contact the manufacturer through its official support channel. Check the seller first, treat seals as warning signals rather than proof, and finish with the maker’s genuine software checks before creating a new backup.
Use this decision sequence before a wallet ever holds funds
Tamper checking works best as a sequence, not as a single glance at a sticker. A criminal can start with a genuine device, open it, add a hidden component, and return it through an otherwise legitimate distribution path. A perfect-looking box therefore cannot establish complete physical provenance.

- Verify the seller before opening. Buy directly from the manufacturer, its official marketplace storefront, or a reseller listed in the manufacturer’s current regional directory. Trezor says an unauthorized third-party purchase cannot be trusted because you cannot know who had access to it. Ledger likewise recommends official or authorized channels.
- Document and inspect the shipment. Photograph every side of the box, the shipping label, seals, inserts, cables, and the device before connecting it. Look for physical inconsistencies and missing contents.
- Reject a preconfigured wallet. A legitimate setup generates the recovery backup on the device. Do not continue if the package contains a written recovery phrase, a supplied PIN, or accounts that already exist.
- Run only official software checks. Install Trezor Suite or Ledger Wallet from the manufacturer’s official domain or an official app store. Follow the setup-time firmware and hardware-authentication prompts.
- Stop when any check fails. Disconnect the wallet, do not fund it, preserve photographs and purchase records, and contact official support. Never include a recovery phrase in a return or support message.
Why seller provenance is the first control
Packaging inspection begins before the package is opened. A device bought through an unlisted marketplace seller may have changed hands after leaving the factory; neither a hologram nor a software check can reconstruct every step in that chain.
Check the exact marketplace operator
On a marketplace, identify the legal seller shown on the order page, not merely the platform’s name. Compare that operator with the manufacturer’s current authorized-reseller directory for your region. Save a screenshot or PDF of the listing, seller name, order number, and receipt. Listings that use stock photographs, vague seller identities, or pressure you to bypass the manufacturer’s normal return process deserve extra caution.

Prefer a traceable purchase record
Keep the invoice, shipping label, serial information shown during setup, and the date you received the unit. These records help support determine whether the product was sold through an approved channel and let you prove the condition in which it arrived. Do not rely on a seller’s claim that a unit is “new” if the seller cannot be matched to the manufacturer’s authorized list.
How to inspect the outer package and contents
Make your first inspection before cutting tape or removing film. Use bright, even light and take close photographs of anything unusual. Do not try to repair, reglue, or clean a suspicious package; changing it can destroy useful evidence.
Seals and shrink-wrap
- Torn or lifted seal: an edge that is partly detached, wrinkled, or has been cut and pressed down again is a reason to stop.
- Duplicated or misaligned seal: a second sticker, overlapping layers, uneven placement, or a design that does not line up with the box printing can indicate replacement.
- Re-shrink-wrapped film: look for loose folds, a new seam, trapped air, heat marks, or film that is tighter or thicker on one side than the other.
- Adhesive residue: glue, cloudy patches, fingerprints under film, or torn fibers around a flap suggest that the box was opened.
Trezor documents a holographic seal on the Safe 5. Its guidance says a damaged or missing seal is a reason to pause setup and contact Trezor Support. The seal is useful as a tamper signal, but it is not cryptographic evidence that the device inside has never been accessed.

- Compare color, sharpness, typeface, and alignment across panels. A replacement box may use slightly different ink or an incorrect language panel.
- Check that model names and regulatory markings are consistent between the box, inserts, and device. Photograph serial or identification labels without posting them publicly.
- Look for cut edges, fresh glue, crushed corners that do not match the shipping damage, or a box flap that has been opened and refolded.
Contents and physical condition
Use the model’s official contents list as your checklist. Missing cables, cards, leaflets, or protective pieces are not harmless if they indicate that someone opened the package. Conversely, an extra cable, card, or printed note that is not part of the documented package should be treated as unexplained rather than as a bonus.
Inspect the device without powering it first. Scratches around screws, seams, buttons, ports, or screen edges; fingerprints under protective film; uneven gaps; and residue around a connector can indicate handling. A previously applied screen protector or a protective film with bubbles and dust is not proof of tampering by itself, but it warrants a slower inspection and a manufacturer check.

Red flags during first power-on
A written recovery phrase or PIN
Never use a wallet that arrives with a recovery phrase printed, handwritten, or sealed in a card. The legitimate setup generates the backup on the device and shows it to you at that time. A supplied PIN is equally disqualifying: the owner must choose the PIN during setup, not inherit one from a seller.
Do not photograph, copy, or type a recovery phrase into a computer, phone, website, support ticket, password manager, or cloud note. Ledger states that a genuine Ledger signer never asks you to enter the recovery phrase on a computer, phone, app, or website and that Ledger will never ask for the 24 words.
Existing accounts, balances, or a skipped setup
A new unit should take you through initialization. If it opens to accounts, a balance, a PIN prompt you did not create, or a screen that says setup is complete, stop. Do not test the displayed balance by sending a small amount; an attacker can use a preconfigured wallet to direct funds to a recovery phrase they control.
Unexpected requests or instructions
Stop if a card, seller message, QR code, or pop-up tells you to reveal your seed, install an unofficial app, disable security warnings, or “synchronize” by entering the phrase online. Close the message and use the support address listed on the manufacturer’s official website, not a contact supplied by the seller or by an unsolicited message.
Run the manufacturer’s authenticity checks
Use a computer or phone that you trust, with current operating-system updates and malware protection. Download the manufacturer’s application only from its official domain or the official app store listing. Never install a wallet application from a link in an email, marketplace message, advertisement, or QR code on a package.

Trezor Safe 5 and Trezor Suite
Trezor’s documented process performs checks during setup. Trezor Suite checks the firmware revision identifier, the firmware hash, and the manufacturer’s signature. If verification fails, the software can block the process or display a warning. The Safe 5 documentation also describes a holographic package seal and setup-time Secure Element checks.
- Open the official Trezor Suite installation and connect the device only when the application requests it.
- Allow the application to identify the model and offer the documented firmware installation or verification step. Do not manually load firmware from a seller or a file-sharing site.
- Read any warning about a failed revision, hash, signature, or hardware check. Capture a screenshot of the warning without revealing your recovery phrase.
- If every check passes, initialize the device yourself, create your own PIN, and write the newly generated backup on paper or another offline medium according to Trezor’s instructions.
Ledger Wallet and Genuine Check
Ledger’s attestation uses a device certificate and a secure channel to verify that the signer contains a genuine Secure Element. Run the Genuine Check in Ledger’s official application and follow the on-screen connection prompts.
Ledger also states an important limitation: Genuine Check confirms a genuine Secure Element but cannot verify the device’s physical supply-chain history or detect every unauthorized modification. A passed result lowers the risk of a counterfeit or altered firmware image; it does not prove that no extra component was installed inside the case.
- Install Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s official domain or the official app store listing.
- Connect the device and start the application’s authenticity or Genuine Check flow. Do not approve an unfamiliar transaction or install an unofficial firmware package.
- Record the result and any error code. If the certificate or secure-channel check fails, disconnect immediately and contact Ledger support.
- After a clean check, initialize the signer yourself, choose a new PIN, and generate a new recovery backup on the device before adding funds.
What software checks can and cannot prove
| Check | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Seller authorization | The purchase came through a channel the manufacturer currently recognizes for the relevant region. | That no employee, courier, reseller, or prior owner accessed the individual unit. |
| Seal and package inspection | Visible evidence of opening, replacement film, altered adhesive, or missing contents. | That a skilled tamperer did not recreate an intact-looking package. |
| Trezor firmware verification | Whether the firmware revision, hash, and manufacturer signature match what Trezor Suite expects; failed checks may be blocked or warned. | Complete physical history of the hardware or every possible added component. |
| Ledger attestation and Genuine Check | Whether the device certificate and secure channel authenticate a genuine Ledger Secure Element. | Physical supply-chain history or every unauthorized modification, including a possible implant that leaves the Secure Element genuine. |
| Self-generated backup | That you, rather than a seller, created the recovery phrase during setup. | That the device has never been physically opened or modified. |
Use the checks together. No single green result overrides a damaged seal, a prewritten seed, an unexplained seller, or an application warning.
Ledger’s October 15, 2026 warning and what it changes
On October 15, 2026, Ledger reported that criminals bought genuine devices, opened them, installed hidden components intended to capture recovery phrases during setup, and returned the devices to distribution. Ledger reiterated that returned units must never be resold.

This incident illustrates the difference between authenticity and provenance. The Secure Element and firmware can be genuine while an added component still threatens the recovery process. Treat a returned or open-box unit as unsafe even when a software authenticity check passes. A sealed package from an authorized channel is safer, but the required response to any physical discrepancy remains the same: do not initialize or fund it until the manufacturer has advised you.
What to do when something looks wrong
If the box is opened or the seal is damaged
- Stop before connecting or initializing the device.
- Photograph the seal, box edges, shipping label, and all contents.
- Keep the device, packaging, receipt, and shipping materials together.
- Contact the manufacturer’s official support channel and describe the condition without sending a recovery phrase or PIN.
- Follow the manufacturer’s return or replacement instructions. Do not let an unapproved seller persuade you to keep using the unit.
If setup displays an authenticity warning
Disconnect the wallet and leave the warning visible long enough to record its wording or error code. Do not retry with random cables, unofficial firmware, or a different computer in an attempt to make the warning disappear. Ask official support whether the unit should be returned or replaced.
If you already entered a recovery phrase into software
Assume that phrase is exposed. Do not use it again for a new wallet. From a known-clean device, create a completely new wallet and transfer assets according to a security plan; seek qualified, official support if you are unsure how to move funds safely. Never send the exposed phrase to support as proof.
If you already funded a suspicious device
Stop further transactions and preserve the device state, application logs, screenshots, purchase records, and correspondence. Contact the manufacturer through its official support channel and, if assets may be at risk, your exchange or custodian’s security team. Do not erase evidence by resetting the device before receiving instructions. A reset does not make a physically modified unit trustworthy.

How to replace a suspect wallet safely
Replacement should restart the entire process rather than assume the old backup is safe. Buy from the manufacturer or an authorized regional seller, inspect the new package before opening, and use only the official application. Generate a new recovery phrase on the replacement device; do not import the phrase from a device whose provenance is in doubt. Verify the new backup according to the device’s on-screen test, store it offline, and fund the wallet only after all checks pass.

Comparing the practical protections
| Protection area | Trezor Safe 5 | Ledger devices |
|---|---|---|
| Package signal | Trezor documents a holographic seal; a damaged or missing seal is a reason to pause and contact support. | Inspect the package for the same physical signs, but the documented control emphasized here is software attestation rather than a seal-based guarantee. |
| Firmware at delivery and setup | Documentation describes setup-time firmware revision, hash, and signature checks through Trezor Suite. | The supplied information does not establish a single firmware-at-delivery state for every Ledger model; use the model’s official setup flow. |
| Hardware authentication | Setup includes Secure Element checks as documented for Safe 5. | Attestation uses a device certificate and secure channel to authenticate a genuine Secure Element. |
| Physical-history limitation | A valid firmware or hardware check does not prove that the case was never opened. | Ledger explicitly says Genuine Check cannot verify physical supply-chain history or detect every unauthorized modification. |
| Support and returns | Contact Trezor Support when a Safe 5 seal is damaged or missing. | Contact official Ledger support for authenticity warnings or suspicious returned units; Ledger says returned units must never be resold. |
| Seller control | Use Trezor’s current authorized channels and regional reseller information. | Use Ledger’s official or authorized channels and retain the purchase record. |
The comparison is not a claim that one manufacturer’s check makes physical inspection unnecessary. Seller provenance, package evidence, self-generated backup, and software verification address different failure points.
A compact checklist for the day your wallet arrives
- Confirm the seller against the manufacturer’s current regional list.
- Photograph the unopened box and shipping label.
- Inspect seals, shrink-wrap, adhesive, printing, seams, and contents.
- Reject any written recovery phrase, supplied PIN, existing account, or skipped initialization.
- Install only the official Trezor Suite or Ledger Wallet application.
- Complete the documented firmware, certificate, Secure Element, or Genuine Check flow.
- Create the PIN and recovery backup yourself on the device.
- Keep the backup offline and never type it into software or a website.
- Do not fund the wallet until physical and software checks are satisfactory.
- Stop, disconnect, preserve evidence, and contact official support if anything is inconsistent.
Questions that should not be treated as shortcuts
Can a hologram prove that a wallet is genuine?
No. A hologram can reveal visible opening or replacement, and Trezor uses one on the Safe 5, but a seal is not cryptographic proof of an untouched supply chain. Combine it with seller verification and the manufacturer’s software checks.
Does a passed Genuine Check prove that no one modified the device?
No. Ledger says Genuine Check authenticates a genuine Secure Element but cannot verify physical supply-chain history or detect every unauthorized modification. Continue to treat unexplained packaging or a returned unit as unsafe.
Is a prewritten recovery phrase ever acceptable?
No. Reject the device. The recovery backup must be generated during your own setup, and you must keep it offline.
Should I test a suspicious wallet with a small deposit?
No. Do not fund a device with an unexplained seal, preconfiguration, missing contents, or an authenticity warning. Escalate it before use.
