There is no proven pace cutoff or gait type that determines whether a carbon-plated supershoe is right for you. Some designs have improved running economy in studies, but a carbon plate works as part of a larger system of foam, geometry and shoe mass. Treat a supershoe as an option to try for a particular race—not a guaranteed time gain or a fix for your gait or injury risk.
What a carbon plate can—and cannot—tell you
A carbon plate is only one element in a supershoe. Its shape and stiffness interact with the shoe’s resilient foam, geometry and mass, so research comparing complete shoes cannot necessarily isolate the plate’s effect. A 2026 systematic review of emerging footwear technologies describes results as heterogeneous and context-dependent, rather than a universal performance benefit. The review’s findings are about studied shoe designs, not a promise that every runner will run faster.

Running economy measures the energy cost of running at a given speed. It is not the same as a guaranteed improvement in race time: an average result across studies cannot predict an individual runner’s result in a particular event.
Is there a pace threshold for supershoes?
No validated pace threshold appears in the reviewed evidence. It does not establish that you must run a particular minutes-per-kilometre or minutes-per-mile pace to benefit—or that slower runners should avoid plated shoes. Instead, assess whether a specific shoe feels comfortable and controlled at the pace and distance for which you plan to use it. That is a practical try-on decision, not an evidence-based cutoff. The 2026 footwear review and the 2025 metabolic-effects review do not establish a qualifying pace.

- FuelCell midsole foam with approximately 3% bio-based content delivers a propulsive feel to help drive you forward. Bio-based content is made from renewable resources to help reduce our carbon footprint.
- Energy Arc pairs sport-specific carbon fiber plate geometry with strategic midsole voids, designed to increase stored energy to deliver a higher amount of total energy returned
- Angular midsole design reduces weight
- Outsole designed for superior traction
- 4 mm drop; due to variances created during the development and manufacturing processes, all references to 4 mm drop are approximate
What running-economy studies found
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis reported a pooled running-economy change of −2.88% (95% confidence interval −4.57% to −1.19%) for the studies contributing to that outcome. This is a review-level estimate, not an individual prediction or a race-time guarantee. The authors note that foam compliance, shoe geometry, mass and plate effects are intertwined; comparing two complete shoes does not necessarily reveal what the plate alone contributed. Read the meta-analysis and its methods.
Does your gait determine whether one will suit you?
Not on the evidence reviewed. A 2026 biomechanics systematic review and meta-analysis included 15 studies of healthy adults. It found no statistically significant group differences between carbon-plated and non-carbon-plated shoes for leg stiffness, knee power, hip power or metatarsophalangeal power. Ankle power showed a borderline reduction, while step frequency had a small, non-significant decrease. The review rated certainty low to moderate and described biomechanical adaptations as subtle, not a consistent redistribution of lower-limb mechanics. See the 2026 biomechanics review.

Those findings do not establish a selection rule based on foot strike, cadence or pronation. A gait label alone cannot tell you whether a particular shoe will feel suitable or improve your performance.
What the evidence says about injury
The reviewed evidence does not establish that supershoes prevent injuries or that they cause injuries for an individual runner. Research on bone-stress-injury-related biomechanics in elite distance runners is emerging, but the available record does not provide a settled causal answer for general runners. A 2026 footwear review calls for more research on long-term adaptation and injury-risk implications. The 2026 bone-stress-injury research record describes a study question; it should not be read as a proven injury outcome.

How to evaluate a supershoe for your event
These checks can help you decide whether a shoe works for you, but they are practical criteria—not validated predictors of who will gain a performance benefit.
- Check comfort and fit. Try the shoe on a representative run and note whether it feels secure as well as comfortable.
- Assess stability and control. At an effort relevant to your race, consider how it handles turns and any uneven sections you expect on the course.
- Consider the full distance. Check whether it remains comfortable for the event you intend to run, not only during a brief try-on.
- Evaluate the whole shoe. Foam, plate shape and stiffness, rocker or other geometry, and mass work together. A plate alone is not a useful basis for ranking a shoe.
- Compare with a familiar shoe if practical. Try both under similar conditions. One uncontrolled run is not proof of a guaranteed effect.
The available evidence does not identify a best model, rank brands or show that a specific shoe matches a particular gait. These checks help you assess fit for your own intended use without treating a possible economy benefit as certain.
