How to Tell if a CAPTCHA Is Fake Before Running Any Command

Leave the page immediately if a CAPTCHA tells you to open Windows Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, or Terminal, paste clipboard text, and press Enter. That workflow is not a normal human-verification challenge. It is the defining pattern of a ClickFix-style social-engineering scam, where a page can copy a malicious command and coach you into executing it yourself.

Legitimate CAPTCHAs ask you to click a checkbox, select matching images, or type characters shown on the page. They do not require you to execute commands. A convincing logo cannot make an unsafe workflow legitimate, because attackers imitate Google reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare Turnstile, Microsoft and other familiar services.

The fastest way to judge a CAPTCHA

Use the requested action, not the artwork, as your first test. A CAPTCHA is almost certainly fake when it asks you to:

  • Press Windows+R or open a terminal window.
  • Copy or paste text that you cannot inspect.
  • Press Enter to “verify” yourself.
  • Run PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal, a script or an installer.

Close the tab without following those instructions. Do not paste the clipboard contents into any command interface. If you still need the service, open a trusted bookmark or type its normal domain yourself rather than following the suspicious page’s link.

The Federal Trade Commission stated in a 2026 consumer alert: “Real CAPTCHAs won’t ask you to run commands on your device.” That single rule catches the most dangerous versions of this scam.

What a legitimate CAPTCHA normally asks you to do

Checkbox verification

A legitimate challenge may present a checkbox or a similar on-page control. Your interaction stays inside the browser window: click the control, wait for the result, and continue if the service accepts it.

Image selection

Some challenges show a grid and ask you to select pictures matching a description. You make the selections visibly in the page; no clipboard command or external application is involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typed characters

A challenge can ask you to type letters or numbers displayed in an image. The characters are entered into the page’s field, not into Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt or Terminal.

Normal recovery options

If a legitimate challenge fails, you can generally retry, refresh it or leave the service. A page that says verification will fail unless you execute an unrelated command is using pressure rather than a genuine CAPTCHA workflow.

How the ClickFix scam works

Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts describe ClickFix as a social-engineering technique that exploits people’s expectations about security checks. The page is designed to make a dangerous action feel routine and urgent.

  1. A visitor reaches an imitation page. It may appear after an advertisement, redirect, pop-up, streaming page or compromised website. The design can imitate a familiar CAPTCHA provider or another trusted brand.
  2. The page displays a plausible “human verification” screen. A checkbox, logo and security language make the prompt look familiar before any command is mentioned.
  3. JavaScript places text in the clipboard. The page can silently copy a command or a sequence containing a command. The visitor may be told that the clipboard now holds a verification code or fix.
  4. Instructions move outside the browser. The visitor is told to press Windows+R, open a terminal, or launch PowerShell or Command Prompt.
  5. The visitor is coached to paste and run. Keyboard directions such as Ctrl+V and Enter turn the victim’s own actions into the execution step.
  6. The command downloads or launches the payload. Observed campaigns have included Lumma Stealer and other information stealers affecting Windows and macOS devices.

Microsoft reported ClickFix campaigns targeting thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day in 2025. That figure describes the scale Microsoft observed; it is not a percentage measuring how common every fake CAPTCHA is.

MITRE ATT&CK records this behavior as User Execution: Malicious Copy and Paste (T1204.004). The technique covers malicious websites that use fake error messages or CAPTCHA prompts to direct a person to open a terminal or Windows Run dialog and execute an arbitrary command.

Recognition checklist: signs the prompt is fraudulent

Keyboard instructions are the strongest warning

Words such as “press Windows+R,” “open Run,” “launch Terminal,” “paste the verification code,” or “press Enter to continue” indicate command execution, not CAPTCHA verification. Treat any one of these as sufficient reason to stop.

The clipboard is part of the workflow

Be suspicious when a page asks you to copy text you cannot inspect, claims that the clipboard contains a security code, or tells you to paste without showing the complete text first. A normal image, checkbox or typing challenge does not need a hidden command in your clipboard.

The challenge arrived in an unexpected context

An unsolicited prompt from a pop-up, ad, redirect, streaming page or unfamiliar page deserves extra scrutiny. Even if you were trying to watch a video or download a file, the request to run a command is unrelated to proving that you are human.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The domain and workflow do not match

Check the address bar independently. A familiar logo on an unexpected domain, a misspelled hostname, a long or unrelated address, or a page reached through a redirect is not proof of authenticity. Do not let a logo override the address and the requested action.

The page uses pressure or threats

Fraudulent pages may say that refusing to paste will block access, invalidate the verification, or cause an account problem. Legitimate challenges provide a retry, refresh or exit path; coercion is a warning sign.

Legitimate challenge versus fake command prompt

Check Legitimate CAPTCHA Fake CAPTCHA warning sign
Interaction Click a checkbox, choose images or type displayed characters in the page Open Run, Terminal, PowerShell or Command Prompt and execute text
Clipboard No hidden command is required The page copies text and tells you to paste it
Context Expected challenge on the service’s normal domain Unexpected pop-up, redirect, advertisement or imitation domain
Refusing You can retry, refresh or leave The page pressures you to run a command to continue

Use the table as a decision aid, not as a scoring system. A single command-execution request is enough to stop, even when the other details appear normal.

Why a trusted logo does not make the page safe

Attackers copy visual elements because people recognize a brand faster than they inspect a URL. Microsoft reported that recent ClickFix pages spoof Google reCAPTCHA and Cloudflare Turnstile and may impersonate legitimate brands. The copy can include logos, colors, familiar wording and a convincing checkbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication is about the whole workflow and address, not the picture. A real provider’s logo cannot authorize a request to open a shell and execute clipboard text. If the domain is unexpected or the instructions leave the browser, stop regardless of how polished the page looks.

A safe decision procedure before you run anything

  1. Pause at the first command instruction. Do not press Windows+R, open a terminal or use a keyboard shortcut suggested by the page.
  2. Do not paste. Leave the clipboard unchanged if possible. Never paste unknown text into Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt, Terminal or an installer dialog.
  3. Read the address bar. Look for the service’s expected domain and an ordinary page path. Treat redirects, misspellings and unrelated domains as suspicious.
  4. Separate the page from the service. Close the tab or window. Do not keep interacting to see what happens; additional clicks can trigger more scripts or downloads.
  5. Reopen the service safely. Use a bookmark you created earlier or type the known domain manually. Do not use a link copied from the suspicious page.
  6. Try the normal verification path. On the genuine service, a challenge should stay in the browser and use a checkbox, image selection or displayed characters.
  7. Report the page. Use your browser’s built-in suspicious-site reporting control. You can also report fraud through ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  8. Warn people who may receive the same link. Tell them specifically that the page requested a command and clipboard paste; do not forward the malicious URL unnecessarily.

These steps apply even when the page says the command is only a “verification code,” “browser fix” or “security check.” Renaming the action does not make command execution part of a CAPTCHA.

If you copied text but did not execute it

Copying alone is not the same as running a command. Close the suspicious tab, clear or replace the clipboard if you are comfortable doing so, and avoid pasting the text anywhere else. Reopen the intended service from a trusted bookmark or manually entered address.

If the page downloaded a file, do not open it. Remove it through your normal download manager or file browser, then run the security scan available on your device. Keep the downloaded file only if a security professional needs it for analysis; do not send it to coworkers or friends as a warning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you pasted the command but did not press Enter

Delete the pasted text from the command window and close that window. Do not press any key that could submit it. A command sitting in a prompt has not necessarily run, but you should still treat the device cautiously because the page may have downloaded other content.

  1. Close the command interface and the suspicious browser tab.
  2. Do not reopen the page to investigate.
  3. Run a full scan with your installed security software.
  4. Update the operating system, browser and security software before returning to sensitive accounts.
  5. If you notice unexpected downloads, pop-ups, new applications or account alerts, follow the executed-command response below.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

If you pressed Enter or otherwise executed the command

Assume the device may be compromised until it has been assessed. Information-stealing malware can target passwords, browser data, cookies, active sessions, banking details and other files. Lumma Stealer and related stealers have been observed in ClickFix campaigns on Windows and macOS.

1. Disconnect the device

Disconnect it from the internet immediately. Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable. Do not continue browsing, shopping or signing in while the device is connected.

2. Run a security scan

Use the device’s installed security software to perform a full scan. Follow any quarantine or removal instructions it gives you. If the tool reports a serious infection or cannot complete a scan, seek professional incident-response help rather than trusting the machine for password changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Update the software and apps

After the scan process permits it, install available operating-system, browser and application updates. Updates close known weaknesses and ensure the security tools are using current detection components, but updating does not by itself prove that a stealer has been removed.

4. Change passwords from a different clean device

Use another device that you trust. Change passwords for email first, then financial services, work accounts, social accounts and any service that reused the same password. Do not change them from the possibly infected computer, because a stealer could capture the new credentials.

5. Enable two-factor authentication

Turn on two-factor authentication for accounts that support it, using the clean device. This adds a second check if a password or session token was exposed.

6. Treat stored sessions and browser data as exposed

Because information stealers can target cookies and active sessions as well as passwords, do not assume that staying signed in is safe. From the clean device, review account security controls and use the service’s available sign-out or session-revocation options.

7. Protect financial and work accounts

If the device contained banking information, payment details or work credentials, notify the relevant bank, employer or security team promptly. Tell them that a command was executed from a fake CAPTCHA page and provide the approximate time and affected device.

What Microsoft recommends for prevention

Microsoft recommends teaching users to inspect what they copy and paste, using browsers with Defender SmartScreen, and configuring Windows Terminal warnings for pasted multi-line text. These controls support judgment; they do not replace it. A warning should be treated as a reason to stop and inspect, not as a prompt to click through.

For individual users

  • Adopt a strict rule: no CAPTCHA requires Run, PowerShell, Command Prompt or Terminal.
  • Keep the browser, operating system and security software updated.
  • Use bookmarks or manually typed domains for services you trust.
  • Read clipboard content before pasting it anywhere, especially into a command interface.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on important accounts before an incident occurs.

For families, schools and small teams

  • Explain the scam using the exact sequence: fake CAPTCHA, Windows+R or Terminal, paste, Enter.
  • Practice closing the tab and reopening the service from a known bookmark.
  • Make reporting easy and non-punitive so people disclose a mistaken click quickly.
  • Configure available browser and terminal warnings, including warnings for pasted multi-line text.
  • Keep a written response plan with the order: disconnect, scan, update, change passwords from a clean device, enable two-factor authentication.

Common situations and the correct response

“The page says it is Cloudflare or Google, so it must be real.”

No. Branding can be copied. Judge the domain and interaction. If the page wants a command, stop.

“The command is already in my clipboard. Can I paste it into Notepad to inspect it?”

Do not follow the page’s instructions or move unknown text around unnecessarily. Close the page and use a trusted security workflow. If you need to preserve evidence, ask a qualified security professional rather than executing or distributing the content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The verification appeared while I was watching a stream.”

An unexpected challenge on a streaming page, advertisement or redirect is a strong contextual warning. Close it and return through the service’s known domain or app.

“I only opened Run; I did not press Enter.”

Close Run without pasting or submitting anything. Then close the suspicious tab and follow the no-execution steps.

“I ran it, but nothing obvious happened.”

Visible symptoms are not a safety test. Disconnect, scan and complete the clean-device password and two-factor-authentication steps because information stealers can operate without an obvious window.

The rule to remember

A CAPTCHA proves that you can complete an on-page challenge; it does not require you to become an operator of your computer’s command shell. The moment a “verify you are human” page asks for Windows+R, a terminal, clipboard paste or Enter, treat it as a fake CAPTCHA and leave without running the command.
