Signs that a bald eagle may be sick or injured
Use these signs to decide whether to call for help. They are general distressed-wildlife indicators; only a licensed rehabilitator or veterinarian can determine what is wrong with an eagle.

Visible trauma
- Bleeding from the body, wing, leg, foot, beak, or eyes.
- A wing or limb that hangs abnormally, appears broken, or cannot be used normally.
- A bird lying on its side rather than sitting upright.
Abnormal eyes
Closed, persistently squinted, crusty, weepy, swollen, or bleeding eyes are warning signs. Do not try to wipe the eyes or apply drops.

From a safe distance, note whether the eagle can fly, walk, or stand when it tries to get away. An eagle that cannot escape may be injured, ill, exhausted, or affected by poisoning. Do not chase it to test its flight; that can increase stress and injury.

Remaining on the ground
An eagle that remains in one spot on the ground for more than 24 hours may need professional assessment. Record when you first noticed it and whether its position or behavior changes.
Context that raises concern
Any of the signs above becomes more urgent when the eagle is near a road, power equipment, a busy public area, a dead animal, or a substance that could be poisonous. Keep your distance and tell the responder exactly what you observed. Do not handle a bird when poisoning is possible.
What to do when you find a grounded or injured eagle
Follow this sequence unless a wildlife authority gives you different directions.

- Move people and pets away. Bring dogs and cats indoors or secure them on a leash. Keep children and bystanders back. Eagles can strike with their feet even when sick, injured, or young.
- Observe without approaching. Note the exact location, time, weather if relevant, posture, visible wounds, eye condition, breathing, and whether the bird can fly, walk, or stand. A photo taken from a safe distance can help a professional, but never move closer for a better picture.
- Call qualified help immediately. Contact a federally permitted wildlife rehabilitator, a veterinarian experienced with raptors, or a wildlife officer. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service provides a Migratory Bird Rehabilitation Facility locator; use it to identify an authorized facility in your area. If no rehabilitator is immediately reachable, contact the relevant state or federal wildlife office for instructions.
- Describe the situation clearly. Give the responder the location, the signs you saw, whether the eagle can escape, possible hazards, and whether anyone has already approached or touched it. Ask whether the professional wants you to remain at the scene and how far away to stay.
- Wait at a safe distance if requested. Keep the area quiet and prevent people or pets from surrounding the bird. Do not repeatedly approach it to check for improvement.
What not to do
- Do not feed the eagle. Audubon warns that food can do more harm than good when an animal is sick or injured. The wrong food, forced feeding, or feeding an eagle that cannot swallow can worsen its condition.
- Do not give water. Pouring water into the beak can cause aspiration, and a weak bird may not be able to drink safely. Wait for professional instructions.
- Do not give medication or home remedies. Human medicines, over-the-counter products, and improvised treatments can poison an eagle or mask signs a rehabilitator needs to evaluate.
- Do not pet, hold, or restrain it. A raptor’s talons and beak can cause serious injury. Stress and struggling can also worsen fractures or internal injuries.
- Do not chase or test flight. Making the bird fly uses energy and may drive it into traffic, water, wires, or another hazard.
- Do not crowd the bird with cameras or vehicles. Noise and movement can prevent it from resting and can trigger defensive attacks.
Can you move a bald eagle yourself?
Usually, no. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says sick and injured eagles require very careful handling and transfer to a veterinarian or rehabilitator experienced with injured raptors. Its guidance also states that eagles are powerful, dangerous animals that can cause serious injury. Unless you are properly trained, do not approach or handle an eagle except when a qualified authority determines that immediate action is necessary.

| Situation | Safest response | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The eagle can fly or move away normally | Keep everyone back, observe briefly, and call a wildlife professional if other warning signs are present. | Testing or pursuing the bird can create a new hazard. |
| The eagle cannot escape, has visible trauma, or lies on its side | Keep the area quiet and contact a permitted raptor professional or wildlife officer immediately. | These are distress indicators, and capture requires specialized handling. |
| Poisoning is possible | Do not touch the eagle or nearby contaminated material. Report the suspected poisoning and follow official instructions. | USFWS says proper training, safety equipment, and safe transport capability are required. |
| A professional specifically directs you to contain it | Follow that person’s instructions exactly, including the container, distance, timing, and transport destination. | Improvised capture can injure both the bird and the rescuer. |
If a professional tells you to contain the eagle
Containment is not a general first-aid step. Do it only after a qualified responder has assessed the situation or has given you explicit directions. Audubon’s raptor guidance describes using a ventilated box slightly larger than the bird, placing it over the eagle, and sliding the container onto a flat surface. The container should remain dark and be kept at room temperature. Transport it only as instructed by the rehabilitator, veterinarian, or wildlife officer.
- Confirm the plan. Ask who will receive the bird, what container is appropriate, where you should stand, and whether transport is actually requested.
- Prepare the area. Remove people and pets, close nearby doors or gates if that can be done without approaching the bird, and avoid loud movement.
- Use the specified ventilated container. Do not improvise with a sealed bin, a wire cage, or a container that is too small. A professional may tell you to use a box slightly larger than the eagle so it can remain contained without excessive movement.
- Cover only as directed. The raptor guidance describes placing the box over the bird and sliding it onto a flat surface. Do not grab the legs, wings, or head, and do not attempt this if the eagle is near traffic, water, electrical equipment, or suspected poison.
- Keep it dark and at room temperature. Do not place the box in direct sun, a hot vehicle, or a cold outdoor area. Do not open it to check the bird unless the professional tells you to.
- Transport only to the instructed destination. Go directly where directed, keep the vehicle quiet, and do not feed, water, medicate, or release the eagle unless the professional gives new instructions.
Why suspected poisoning changes the response
A poisoned eagle can expose a person through contaminated feathers, bodily fluids, vomit, bait, carcasses, or the surrounding area. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says a suspected-poisoned eagle should not be handled without proper training, appropriate safety equipment, and the ability to transport it safely. Do not pick up the bird, touch suspected bait, or move a carcass to make the scene safer. Keep people and pets away, note what you see from a distance, and report the concern to wildlife authorities. Tell responders why poisoning is suspected and identify any nearby material without touching it.
Who should receive the call?
Federally permitted wildlife rehabilitator
A permitted rehabilitator has authorization and facilities to care for wild birds and can coordinate transfer, examination, stabilization, and release decisions. Ask specifically whether the facility accepts bald eagles and has raptor expertise.
Raptor-experienced veterinarian
A veterinarian with experience treating raptors may provide urgent medical care. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service policy says licensed veterinarians generally must transfer eagles to a federally permitted rehabilitator after care, with limited exceptions for birds held less than 24 hours. Ask the veterinarian where the eagle will go next before arranging transport.

Wildlife officer or agency
A wildlife officer can determine whether the eagle may be handled, must remain undisturbed, or requires an agency response. USFWS policy says injured or sick eagles should be promptly reported to Service law enforcement, which decides how the situation should be managed.
When calling, have the exact location, your callback number, the eagle’s condition, whether it can escape, and any suspected hazard ready. Stay available for follow-up instructions, but do not approach the bird while waiting.
Legal limits on possession and care
Live migratory birds and eagles may not simply be kept by a finder. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service states that possession requires a permit. A well-intentioned person who takes an eagle home, keeps it overnight, or attempts treatment can create legal and welfare problems even if the goal is rescue.
That is why the safest route is to involve an authorized professional before capture whenever possible. If an emergency makes immediate containment unavoidable, contact wildlife authorities as soon as it is safe and follow their instructions about handling, transport, and transfer.

How to judge the options in front of you
When deciding whether to wait for a professional or act under direction, use these five questions:
- Distance and personal safety: Can you remain far enough away that the eagle cannot reach you with its talons or beak?
- Escape ability: Can it fly, walk, and stand when it chooses to move, or is it unable to escape?
- Trauma or poisoning: Is there bleeding, a deformed wing or limb, an abnormal eye, a side-lying posture, or a possible toxic substance?
- Professional availability: Can a permitted rehabilitator, raptor veterinarian, or wildlife officer respond or give instructions?
- Authority instructions: Has the relevant wildlife agency told you to leave the bird undisturbed or directed a specific containment plan?
Professional response is preferred whenever it is available. Self-capture is not a faster version of rescue if it increases the chance of a talon injury, a worsening fracture, exposure to poison, or an illegal transfer.
Common situations and the safe decision
The eagle is standing near water but has no obvious wound
Do not assume that a quiet or grounded eagle is safe to approach. Observe whether it can move away and whether its eyes, posture, and wings look normal. Keep people and pets back and call a professional if it cannot escape or shows any warning sign.
The eagle is on a roadside
Do not enter traffic or try to block vehicles yourself. From a safe location, call wildlife or emergency authorities and describe the exact lane, shoulder, or nearby landmark. Keep bystanders away without placing yourself in danger.
Best Value
The eagle flew away after you called
Tell the responder that it left and give the direction and time. Do not pursue it. If it was able to escape and showed no other warning sign, continued observation from a distance is safer than chasing it.
The eagle is near a dead animal or bait
Treat this as a possible poisoning scene. Keep all people and pets away, do not touch the carcass or bait, and report the suspected exposure. Wait for trained personnel with appropriate safety equipment.
Someone already touched or moved the eagle
Tell the rehabilitator or wildlife officer exactly what happened, including how long the bird was held and whether it was fed, watered, medicated, or placed in a container. Do not continue handling it unless the professional directs you.

What a good handoff includes
A complete handoff helps the professional make decisions without requiring you to repeat dangerous observations. Provide:
- The exact location and the safest way to reach it.
- When you first saw the eagle and how long it remained in one spot.
- Whether it attempted to fly, walk, or stand.
- Every visible injury or eye abnormality.
- Potential hazards such as roads, wires, water, chemicals, bait, or a carcass.
- Whether people or pets approached it.
- Anything anyone gave it or used on it.
- Your current distance from the bird and whether it is still contained or free.
Do not put yourself at risk to collect a closer photograph, a feather, a sample, or the suspected poison. A verbal description from a safe distance is preferable to another injury.
