HDMI ports are wider and shallower than USB Type-A ports, which are rectangular. USB Type-C ports are smaller, rounded ovals. Check the label and your device’s manual to confirm an unclear port—and don’t assume a USB-C port can send video just because of its shape.
How to recognize each port
| Port | What the opening looks like | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Relatively wide and shallow, with a trapezoid-like shape; often labeled “HDMI.” | Confirm its location and purpose in the laptop or TV manual. TV HDMI inputs are often grouped on the side or rear and numbered. |
| USB Type-A | Larger rectangular opening, often marked with the USB trident symbol or USB wording. | Color is not a reliable identifier: USB-A ports can be black, blue, or another color. |
| USB Type-C | Small, rounded oval opening; its plug is reversible. | Check the exact model’s documentation to learn whether it supports data, charging, video output, or some combination. |
Manufacturers identify HDMI and USB ports separately in their port diagrams. For examples, see HP’s computer port guide and ASUS’s laptop port guide. If the opening is hard to see, compare it with the diagram for your exact device rather than trying connectors until one fits.

Does USB-C mean HDMI or video output?
No. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed set of functions. A USB-C port may support data transfer, charging, video output, or only some of those capabilities. MSI explains that USB-C features vary by laptop model and advises checking the model’s specifications in its USB Type-C port guidance. ASUS likewise directs users to the device specifications or manual to confirm USB-C display support in its USB-C display FAQ.

A logo may provide a clue, but the model-specific specifications or manual are the confirmation. Do not buy a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter based on the connector shape alone.

Choose the connection for your setup
Laptop to TV with HDMI
For the usual laptop-to-TV display connection, run an HDMI cable from the laptop’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV. Select the matching numbered HDMI input on the TV. Check both devices’ specifications and choose a cable that supports the resolution, refresh rate, and features you need; there is no single cable specification established for every setup.
Laptop USB-C to TV HDMI
This can work if the laptop’s exact USB-C port supports video output. Use a compatible USB-C-to-HDMI adapter or cable, and compare its supported resolution, refresh rate, and any needed HDR or audio features with the laptop and TV specifications. A USB-C port limited to data or charging will not provide video through a standard display adapter.

Console or camera HDMI to a laptop
A laptop’s HDMI port is typically an output for sending the laptop’s picture to a display, not an input for showing a console or camera on the laptop screen. Bringing an HDMI source into a computer is a capture use case: a capture device accepts HDMI and sends video to the computer over USB. Lenovo explains this distinction in its guide to HDMI input and USB-C video connections. Before choosing capture hardware, verify supported input formats and content-protection limits.

- HDMI cable: Choose this for HDMI output on the laptop and HDMI input on the TV. Match its supported display features to both devices.
- USB-C-to-HDMI adapter: Choose one only after confirming that the laptop’s specific USB-C port supports video output. Check compatibility and supported display features.
- HDMI capture device: Choose this when you need to bring an HDMI source into a computer for viewing or recording. It is not interchangeable with a standard USB-C-to-HDMI display adapter.
A generic “USB-to-HDMI cable” is not enough information to determine compatibility. USB-A, USB-C video output, and HDMI input/output are different parts of the connection; confirm the port capability and signal direction for your use case.

A quick way to identify an uncertain port
- Inspect the opening and any nearby label or icon without forcing a connector into it.
- If it looks wide and shallow and is labeled HDMI, compare it with the port diagram in the device manual.
- If it is rectangular or oval, identify whether it is USB Type-A or Type-C; do not use port color as proof.
- For USB-C video, check the exact laptop model’s official specifications or manual for display output.
- Connect an output to an input: a laptop’s display output goes to the TV’s HDMI input. For an HDMI source entering a computer, use suitable capture hardware.
